‘Benny Goodman Remembered’ Friday 13 Sept 2019

‘BENNY GOODMAN REMEMBERED’ returns for a 2nd appearance here at our FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB, Kent this Friday, 13th September 2019.  Last March was the band’s debut and as it was so successful, we have been requested to repeat the evening. TIM HUSKISSON will again play clarinet as BENNY GOODMAN, band leader, with COLIN BRAY playing vibraphone, as LIONEL HAMPTON and ALAN BERRY playing piano, as TEDDY WILSON.  Also ROGER CURPHEY will be playing double bass, as SLAM STEWART, plus KEITH GRANT playing drums, as GENE KRUPA and (singing just a few songs – from bottle-fed brunette) DIANE GRANT singing as (actual blonde) PEGGY LEE (I know – try closing your eyes) …. As I said last time, although I’m nervous, I’m so excited to be singing with these brilliant musicians. I have only sung on a few occasions at the club because you do have to pay to come in, however – sorry, you still have to pay but only £10 for these fine musicians – hmmm.  Doors will be open from 7:00pm, with music starting about 8:00pm, finishing at 11:00pm.  Come early, as last time we had a full house.  For certain, we will have a fantastic atmosphere – we always do.  We enjoy dancing, we have a Shepherd Neame bar (served by Kath and Barb). We also have plenty of off-road parking. I think Jackie, John and possibly Len will be helping me at the door to greet you. Diane & Keith

In 1942, Benny Goodman, known as ‘The King of Swing’ & his Orchestra and Peggy Lee recorded ‘Why Don’t You Do Right’. She song it in the film ‘Stage Door Canteen’ in 1943. The ong was written in 1936 by Joseph “Kansas Joe” McCoy.

GRANTIE is back this Friday, 6th September 2019 with his own band, GRANTIES DIXIE SIX here at Kent’s FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB.  Drummer, KEITH GRANT will be helping to swing this lovely Dixieland jazz band along.  He has a great guest star joining the band this week, non-other than PETE RUDEFORTH, who plays trumpet and sings with world-renown band leader, Chris Barber (I know, I’m name-dropping, but I’m allowed).  Anyway, we also have fabulous musicians, tenor sax player JOHN LEE and trombonist BOB DWYER (he sings beautifully too) and swinging away in the engine room will be TIM HUSKISSON on piano and ROGER CURPHEY on double bass, both keeping Keith company (and in line – ha).  I shall be so proud to sing a couple of songs with this fabulous host of musicians.  Try to get there by 8:00pm, so’s not to miss a thing.  Yes, it’s still only £10 to enjoy these top notch guys with us, Keith and Diane.

Golden Eagle Jazz Band, Friday 30th August 2019

We are so pleased to welcome the GOLDEN EAGLE JAZZ BAND back to our FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent) tonight, Friday 30th August 2019.  You will certainly be entertained by this traditional jazz band.  They were last here 28th June, but I was in Spain and failed to produce a newsletter (unforgivable of me!).  Bass banjo playing band leader, KEVIN SCOTT (plus vocals) has joining him tonight, TONY CARAVIS (trumpet), ALAN CRESSWELL (reeds), ROY STOKES (trombone/vocals), plus JOHN SIRET (double bass) and MALC MURPHEY (drums).  These musicians will make sure your feet are tapping, your faces are fixed with big smiles and you will go away at the end of the evening, brim full of happiness.  What more can I say, except if you haven’t been to our club before, make your first visit tonight, entrance will cost you just £10.  You will not be disappointed – we love to dance, have friendly bar staff, plenty of free off-road parking – so see you tonight for some great ‘live’ jazz.  Your hosts, Diane and Keith.

Sorry, someone is playing ‘silly kids’ within our website, but I will carry on as if they dont exist………..  This photo is quite old, but a great photo dont you think.

George ‘Kid’ Tidiman’s All Stars, Friday 2nd August 2019

We’re certainly expecting a humdinger with GEORGE ‘KID’ TIDIMAN’S ALL STARS on Friday, 2nd AUGUST 2019.   What a band our trombone playing ‘Kid’ has planned to be with him (not that any of his band members aren’t anything but good).  However, DENNY ISLETT is back playing trumpet and what a player – aye!  Plus, you know what I think of TIM HUSKISSON, he’s playing clarinet & sax.   JOHN SIRET is playing double bass, ‘SOUTHEND BOB’ ALBUTT is on banjo (& brilliant vocals), plus KEITH GRANT will be playing drums – yes back again this week (unfortunately, sorry to mention, but Bill Finch is feeling ‘under the weather’ just now).  Mentioning weather, small flying ants are out tonight – covering my car, so probably means hot weather likely).  Come and have a drink tomorrow night to keep you ‘happy’ and hydrated and at the same time, enjoy the great music likely at our club.  Diane and Keith – your hosts. P.S., so sorry, no time to sort photos again, please look back at previous newsletters of the band hmmm.

Tony Pitt’s All Stars, 26th July 2019

The fabulous TONY PITT’S ALL STARS are here tonight, FRIDAY, 26th July 2019, at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent).  I’ve always said TONY (banjoist/guitarist) brings nothing but the best with him and again, it hasn’t changed.  ALAN GRESTY is on trumpet &vocals, AL NICHOLLS is on soprano &tenor sax, ALISTAIR ALLAN is on trombone, plus  ANDY LAURENCE on double bass and yes, my KEITHIE is playing drums, but don’t let that put you off, he’s promised to try harder and catch his stick – good boy! Thank goodness the weather has cooled down – TONY was playing at Lords in that heat yesterday, so I won’t be wearing a hat tonight (taken it off to him). I had intended having this newsletter done yesterday, but sooooo hot, I was so shaky and couldn’t think straight, so how he and whoever played yesterday managed, well done. One more thing, I think it is a long time since ALISTAIR was here, let’s light up the room with our welcome applause and make him feel at home and if we are lucky, he might do his party piece for us. Join us tonight, your hosts, Diane and Keith. P.S. Sorry no photos, I haven’t time, but if some are done tonight, I will add them in the week.

Mardi Gras JazzBand, Friday, 19th July 2019

We’re going to the MARDI GRAS, why not come too.  It’s this Friday, 19th July 2019 at our FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent).  That is when the MARDI GRAS JAZZBAND will be with us, bringing the New Orleans sparkle of magic with them… they go regularly.  I promise, you will hanker to go there yourselves, but if you cant, just grab some of that magic from here.

The musicians are trombonist band leader, ROB PEARCE and with him will be LEIGH HENSON on trumpet & flugelhorn, plus JOHN ELLMER, who usually brings all manor of reed instruments with him to play. ROGER LEWIN is back for his second visit to us, playing piano (although he had played here some years ago).  Then there will be STEVE SMITH on double bass and of course, PAUL BAKER on drums, smiling away at the back.

I shall be wearing my beads they gave to me, during their last visit here.  Yep, looking forward to a bit of fun and dance the night away.  Come on … join us – your hosts, Diane and Keith. P.S A rush job in the end, Sorry, I found I had repeated photos, plus unable to find a picture of Steve (sorry Steve). Hopefully my time will be more peaceful soon to allow me to sort out and publish the lovely photos sent to me from both Alan Walker and Mike Witt.

Actually none of them have from 2015 either.
