Bob Dwyer’s Bix & Pieces, Friday 28th February 2020

It’s BOB DWYER’S BIX & PIECES band back here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent) to entertain us tonight – Friday 28th February 2020. I’m so amazed how quickly another weekend is looming up on us. BOB was playing with Keith’s band last Friday, and I was telling you he would be back with his own band ‘next week’ and here we are already. Anyway, trombonist & singer BOB has booked MALCOLME WALTON to play trumpet, with PAULA JACKMAN on clarinet, plus HUGH CROZIER on piano & vocals, GRAHAM COLLICOTT on drums and MIKE BENNET on double bass. Lovely regular JOHN BAYNE unfortunately is unwell, so his Doctor has advised him to stop playing for a while.  Anyway, I think it might be the first time both Paula and Mike have played for us here at Farnborough, so please give them both our best Farnbronian welcome, won’t you. Come and join us for another wonderful evening’s entertainment Happy birthday to Christine and Ken – that’s presuming their families don’t pinch them from us …. Your hosts Diane & Keith

As I promised, I returned to sort some photos out, but found problems, such as my newsletter for Bob’s last gig in October 2019, seems to have disappeared.  I am soo tired having only had 3-4hours sleep last night, plus to sort something out for both Paula and Mike would take too long, so will just leave you with this one of  JOHN BAYNE and to wish him a quick recovery and send everyone’s love (I know Mike will not let you down on double bass).

Grantie’s Dixie Six, Friday, 21st FEBRUARY 2020

I’m so excited because Keith has his own GRANTIE’S DIXIE SIX playing this Friday, 21st FEBRUARY 2020 at Kent’s FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB.  I’m sure he will be swinging this lovely Dixieland jazz band along like a good’ern. Why do I say that? Well, because he has just acquired a fabulous set of Zilgian cymbals that he just can’t wait to play. I know you will all love his great big grin too. Hey and what about the band! Well we have a fabulous body of musicians to entertain you. How about this – we have PETE RUDEFORTH on trumpet (also sings), plus tenor sax player JOHN LEE, trombonist BOB DWYER (another singer) and swinging away in the engine room will be TIM HUSKISSON on piano and ROGER CURPHEY on double bass, who, I’m sure, will be calming Keith down at the same time – hmmm).  I’m hoping to sing a song on the night. The music begins at 8:00pm and goes on until 11:00pm. Don’t forget, we have free off-road parking. Still only £10 entrance and you will have some first-class jazz. Your hosts, Keith and Diane.

P.S.  We (thats ‘4–In-A-Bar+1) will be playing this Sunday, 23rd February 2020 2.:30pm-5:30pm – at Ye Olde Whyte Lyon, next to Princess Royal Hospital in Locks Bottom, Orpington, Kent, Curser onto our page (top of the website) for further details.  We play relaxing ‘dinner music) and is very popular. Mike Barry’s Uptown Gang, Friday, 14th February 2020 being St. Valentine’s Night

It’s MIKE BARRY’S UPTOWN GANG who will be entertaining you at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent) tomorrow night, Friday, 14th FEBRUARY 2020 – ST. VALENTINE’S NIGHT.

MIKE BARRY plays trumpet and in his happy band he will have TIM HUSKISSON on reeds, ‘WHISPERING’ MIKE HOLT on trombone (who also sings), JOHN STUART on banjo & guitar, ROGER CURPHY on double bass and PAUL NORMAN on drums.  Last time Mike had his Uptown Band, we were apologising for cancelling the week prior and the fact that we have only had to do so twice in 30years (always due to extreme bad weather) and that was two years ago. Since then, we have cancelled both Januarys and sod’s law, we have had the warmest Januarys – NO SNOW!!!! Anyway, ‘live’ jazz is what we offer, so just in case of snow in February March and April, come and join us for some fun – we do enjoy ourselves.

Neil Osborne has generously given a sponsorship to the Farnborough Jazz Club, so our very special thanks Neil, for your warm-heartedness.

Your hosts, Diane and Keith

Golden Eagle Jazz Band, Friday 7th February 2020

YES – YES – YES (trumpet blast)– WE ARE BACK!   YOU KNOW YOU HAVE MISSED US – YOUR FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent)!!!!!  It’s a whole new decade – and whether you are happy, or sad about it – a whole new retrieved independence – and I’m not even going to mention the word – ha, ha!  Let’s get back to jazz – dancing – and whether you are going to commiserate or celebrate, let’s enjoy ourselves.  Keith and I have missed our Fridays just as much as you.  It will be a great evening and should be a sell-out (like our Christmas dos) – so don’t miss this FRIDAY, 7th FEBRUARY 2020, our first of the year – yippee.

It’s the GOLDEN EAGLE JAZZ BAND and these Golden Boys are banjo player, singer & very funny joker (although sometimes corny, but don’t tell him I said so – he,he) band leader – KEVIN SCOTT.  He will be joined by TONY CARAVIS playing trumpet, ALAN CRESSWELL playing reeds (singer too) and SIMON WYLD playing trombone, plus JOHN SIRET playing double bass and MALC MURPHEY playing drums (another singer).  These musicians (and I will cut and paste the following) will make sure your feet are tapping, your faces are fixed with big smiles and you will go away at the end of the evening, brimmed full of happiness. What more can I say, except if you haven’t been before, make this your first visit, entrance will cost you just £10. You will not be disappointed – we love to dance, have friendly bar staff (namely Ian [who is the Football Club’s President – Sports Club’s secretary], Kath and Barb), a great raffle, plenty of free off-road parking – so see you tomorrow -7th for some great ‘live’ jazz.  (sorry – will need to return later with some photos).

Your hosts, Diane and Keith.

Mardi Gras Jazzband, Friday, 20 December 2019

(this is an old Christmas cartoon painting by Keith  to Diane)

MARDI GRAS JAZZBAND is to be our FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent)’s last jazz band of 2019 AND this Friday, 20th DECEMBER is not only our last gig of the year, but OUR CHRISTMAS PARTY TOO.   We always have a wonderful turnout every year (whoever we have playing) and so you all help us make our parties swing full of fun and excitement.  This year’s band will be bringing tons of their fun and excitement too.  It is MARDI GRAS JAZZBAND’s first time of playing our Christmas gig because ROB PEARCE (with his lovely wife, Lisa Jane) plus some of the other guys in the band, often spend Christmas in New Orleans.  Most of you know, trombonist Rob leads this band and the fun they have in New Orleans means ‘party time’ – hence their great band name.  Rob is bringing with him, PETE RUDEFORTH to play trumpet, with JOHN ELLMER on his many different reed instruments,  The brilliant engine will be PAUL BAKER on drums, plus STEVE SMITH on double bass and JOHN STEWART on banjo &guitar.  We have already received many bookings, so if you want to be included, then book your seat as soon as possible please, so not to be disappointed in missing out – you don’t have to be a member.  It does help me to organise the tables, if you phone beforehand (Tel: 07704190009, or email: dianehorder@gmail.com). You can bring your own food and candelabras, though not your own drink pretty please, we must help the Sports Club make it worth their while keeping their club-priced bar open for us.  Oh! and yes, we always include many more raffle prizes at our Christmas parties.   So start your Christmas frivolities with our party …. plenty of dancing and off-road free parkingOne last thing, we will be closed throughout January, so our next club date will be 7th February – with Golden Eagle Jazz Band starting our new year 2020 off.  Best wishes for Merry Christmas, a Happy Healthy New Year and thanks for supporting us during 2019 – from Diane and Keith – your hosts.

Keith and my next two performances of ‘4-In-A-Bar+1’ at Ye Olde Whyte Lyon, Locks Bottom will be SUNDAY 29th DECEMBER 2019 and SUNDAY 26th JANUARY 2020

‘BARRY PALSER’S SUPER SIX’ are playing here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (KENT) tomorrow night, Friday 13th December 2020. As most of you are aware, Barry has had a stroke, so we want you to turn up to give especially strong support.  It needs to be strong enough to reach Barry in hospital, in Cambridge (I believe in ESP), so he knows we care.  You know, that is how far he and Bridget travelled here (& back home) to bring you his special magic, so not much to ask you to do something in return please, aye! The rest of Barry’s gang will all be turning up to entertain you – we have COLIN GRAHAM stepping in for Barry (on trombone of course), with ALAN GRESTY on trumpet, TIM HUSKISSON on clarinet &alto sax, TONY PITT on banjo &guitar, ANDY LAWRENCE on double bass and JOHN TYSON on drums. Such a brilliant load of musicians, you know you want to come anyway – yeah. So be here for an 8:00pm start (if you need to order a taxi, the music ends at 11:00pm).  For all you newbies, we have a Shepherd Neame bar (at club prices) served by Cathy and Barb, We have a great atmosphere – love dancing – £10 entrance  – plenty of free off-road parking, so why not give us a try .  Hosted by Diane & Keith.

P.S. Please don’t forget, next week is our Christmas party. We need to hear from you please – you’ll be entertained by the  ‘MARDIE GRAS JAZZBAND’  who will definitely put you in the party mood – something they specialise in.  Entrance is £15.  There will be many more prizes to win in our special raffle (if you turn up tomorrow night, you will receive a free raffle ticket for you to enter in next week’s party).  Please either book with Diane tomorrow night, (Keith will forget to tell me, bless him!), or you can send an email – dianehorder@gmail.com or phone 07704190009 to book. Sorry if you have left a message on our landline, we will not have heard it, because the phone is still out of order!

Phoenix Dixieland Jazz Band, 6th December 2019

It’s the PHOENIX DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND who will be playing tonight, 6th DECEMBER 2019 here at the Farnborough Jazz Club (Kent). I can’t believe it is six months since we had the band here and it is not because they are not good. Quite the contrary. It is just due to my own personal problems, that I was unable to give my time to concentrating on who was booked and when. Anyway, please come along and find out for yourself just how great a job of pouring out some (*$@&!) good music they are. PAUL HIGGS will be playing trumpet, with CHARLES SHERWOOD on clarinet &sax and BILL TODD on trombone &vocals. The engine will consist of ALAN BERRY on piano, ALLAN CLARKE on drums and ROGER CURPHEY on double bass – what a fabulous evening we know they will give us. Come and join us to let the Christmas fun begin. Diane and Keith.

George ‘Kid’ Tidiman’s All Stars, Friday, 29th November 2019

GEORGE ‘KID’ TIDIMAN’S ALL STARS will be our band tomorrow, Friday, 29th NOVEMBER 2019.   The guys in the band are (obviously) ‘Kid’ GEORGE on trombone and with him will be PETER LEONARD on trumpet and ALAN CRESSWELL on clarinet & sax.   Then we have our engine boys, JOHN SIRET on double bass, ‘SOUTHEND BOB’ ALBUTT is on banjo & vocals, plus again, KEITH GRANT playing drums.  Bill Finch is still not quite well enough to make the journey (hope you are feeling better soon Bill – Farnborough wishes you well).  We endeavour to bring you great music at our club, but we do need punters to enjoy themselves.  So where are you all lately, the club needs you. (sounds like ‘Your Country Needs You’ ha.)   Diane and Keith – your hosts.

HERE IS AN URGENT MESSAGE: Unfortunately, the ‘Jazz Guide Magazine’ have advertised the band appearing in the week before the Christmas party (Friday 13th December 2019) as being Mike Barry’s band, which is incorrect.  It is definitely BARRY PULSER’S SUPER SIX. They have it correct in the magazine’s website, but not their magazine, quite a conundrum!  As many of you know, Barry has had a stroke, so we don’t want him (or the band) to worry, IT WILL BE BARRY PALSER’S BAND. We all wish (& ‘will’) both Bridget (who has also had an operation) and Barry both, a speedy recovery, we want Barry to get well enough for him to return to playing here again as soon as possible.

ALSO, as you will see, we all make mistakes!   Unfortunately, I failed to add our Christmas Party entrance fee in both Just Jazz and Jazz Guide magazines, thereby it seems to appear as £10.  I must apologise, but the Christmas party is £15, to allow us to pay a better fee to whoever is playing (this year is ‘MARDI GRAS JAZZBAND’). Obviously, jazz bands have never received a much-deserved fee as bands obtain in other genres of music.  In a very small way, Christmas is a time when everyone can show their appreciation.  Bands can earn far more if they played for Corporate Companies’ Christmas parties, but love to see your smiling faces.  At this point, can I ask you to reserve a booking before-hand, if possible, please. Our landline is out of commission, so please call 07704190009, or come to club and tell me, thanks. Diane xx

Mardi Gras JazzBand, 22nd November 2019

MARDI GRAS JAZZBAND’ is run by trombonist ROB PEARCE. He has his lovely band here tonight, Friday, 22 NOVEMBER 2019 at our Farnborough Jazz Club (Kent). He is bringing with him LEIGH HENSON on trumpet & flugelhorn, JOHN ELLMER on his many different reed instruments, PETE CLANSY on double bass, with DON COLES on drums AND  this week, TONY PITT on banjo. This is a band who always bring happiness wherever they go. They often go to New Orleans, so that’s the sort of fun I mean. This year, this band is our Christmas party entertainment (Friday, 20th December). We are already receiving bookings. So, if you want to be included, then book your seat as soon as possible, so not to be disappointed in missing out. Christmas always include many more raffle prizes. You can bring your own food (though not drink please, the bar must make it worth their while staying open for us), but you can bring candelabras if you want. (photos to be added this afternoon, need to shop for tonight’s raffle prizes now!!!!! ) Your hosts, Diane and Keith.

Golden Eagle Jazz Band, Friday 15th November 2019

The GOLDEN EAGLE JAZZ BAND are returning to the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent) tonight, Friday 15th November 2019.  Traditional jazz at it best.  KEVIN SCOTT is a happy, cheerful soul and leads the band with strong qualities when playing banjo, singing and generally making us laugh with his humour.  As a result, his band are very loyal to him.  Playing tonight are TONY CARAVIS (trumpet), ALAN CRESSWELL (reeds) with ROY STOKES (trombone & vocals), plus CHRIS THOMPSON (double bass) and MALC MURPHEY (drums & vocals). That’s some great entertainment for just £10.  With a club priced bar and plenty of free off-road parking.  Your hosts are Diane and Keith.
