So come and join your hosts

P.S. You may remember last time they were with us, they had DEREK SCOFIELD.  He had a cataract operation a week, or so ago, so not here tonight,  We are wishing him well soon, but please, a warm welcome to JOHN AUST.  Colin played alto, tenor and bass saxes plus piccolo & vocals, and memorably, you may recall, did a little bit of tap dancing too – here is a photo of him.  I will eventually upload the rest in due course.  Also, you will notice GRAHAM WISEMAN was playing trombone with the band in 2016.  Graham played here often.  Remembering him tonight – although a warm welcome to GORDON RUSHTON too.

This FRIDAY, 16TH MARCH 2018, GEORGE ‘KID’ TIDIMAN’S ALL STARS will give you one a crackin’  evening here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent), because with our Kid’ GEORGE, (trombone), will be non-other than DENNY ILETT (trumpet), what a player aye?  Of course, I’m prejudiced about TIM HUSKISSON on clarinet, he plays piano with our Sunday quartet and I just love his talent.  Then we have the great engine backing them, who will be ‘SOUTHEND BOB’ ALLBUT on banjo (with his rich baritone voice), JOHN SIRETT on double bass and BILL FINCH on drums.  Such a delightful band, with plenty of atmosphere going on.  I must mention, can you believe we were boiling hot last time they were here back in July, with the temperature at 28o.  Now we are in for another bitterly cold spell, although not till after we slip our Friday in and the ‘Beast from the East’ hits us on Saturday or Sunday!   So enjoy coming out to us, you may be stuck indoors again for a couple of days afterwards.

Your hosts,

The Granties (Diane and Keith)

It’s FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent) calling and YIPPEE – WE ARE OPEN TONIGHT, Friday, 9th March 2018 and it’s with MIKE BARRY’S UPTOWN GANG.

Oh dear, I have just heard MIKE has had a nasty fall, badly hurting his knee and sadly will not be with us tonight.  However, he has got hold of band leader &trumpeter DAVE RANCE to take his place.  Dave will have the usual UPTOWN GANG, namely TIM HUSKISSON on reeds, WHISPERING’ MIKE HOLT on trombone (who also sings), JOHN STUART on banjo & guitar, ROGER CURPHY on double bass and GRAHAM COLLICOTT on drums.  Thank goodness that very cold spell looks like it has gone and Spring is on its way – those lovely little flowers are appearing.  Don’t you just love this time of year, when we have something to look forward to.  Sorry about cancelling last week, but we have only had to do so twice in nearly 30years (always due to extreme bad weather), not bad aye!  Let’s hope we don’t have to resort to that again this year.  Anyway, we’re sure you will all be back feeling hungry for some jazz and Dave, with Mike’s band, is just what you (and I) need.  Hey, ‘live’ jazz is what we offer, so get down here (or up, depending on where you live!) and join us for that fix.

Your hosts, Diane and Keith

CANCELLED ‘Lord Napier Hot Shots’, Friday, 2nd March 2018 CANCELLED The ‘LORD NAPIER HOT SHOTS’ have kindly agreed to cancel their gig here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB this Friday, 2nd March 2018. The musicians were to have been MIKE JACKSON on trumpet, PAT GLOVER on clarinet, MIKE DUCKWORTH on trombone, LYNN SAUNDERS on banjo, BILL TRAXLER on drums and PETE CLANCY on double bass. A reluctant decision has been made! We feel it would be sensible to cancel this Friday’s Jazz. There are too many of you ‘gung-ho’ jazz lovers, who would make the effort to support us and we would be putting you all in danger of falling over, as the situation is today, let alone on Friday. This also includes Bill, with his drums, plus whoever brings the sound equipment – not easy in icy conditions. But with the forecast being blizzards, it could be impossible to get into the clubhouse anyway. So this way, it will be less stressful for me to get in touch with you all – I have a few days to make the many phone calls to those of you who are not on a computer! It is a difficult job, as some of you who don’t come very often, just might decide to come this Friday. Well, what a wicked situation. The weather forecast has been horrible for Frid

Well, what a wicked situation.  The weather forecast has been horrible for Friday – blizzards, etc., forecasted!  What upsets me is the mere fact that we cancelled the whole of January, in case of such an event, but had absolutely no sign of bad weather at all.  We had planned on visiting Dick and Sheila at Sidcup Jazz club, only to find they were closed for the whole month too, due to renovations.  What do they call it – sod’s law!

Hopefully we can look forward to better weather the following Friday 9th March 2018.  We have Mike Barry’s Uptown Gang.

The PHOENIX DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND, as Brucie (Sir Bruce Forsyth) would say, ‘you are our favourite’ at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (well one of them, ha).  They and are here this Friday 23th February 2018.  The musicians will be PAUL HIGGS (iridescent trumpet), CHARLES SHERWOOD (clarinet), BILL TODD (trombone/voc), ALLAN CLARKE (drums), ROGER CURPHEY (double bass) and this time, pianist ALAN BERRY.  Alan has played with many greats.  For many years, he worked with the jazz programme ‘The Jazz Club’ on BBC Radio (now Radio 2).  Be prepared to hear some fabulous jazz and I know you’ll leave with a big smile on your face.

P.S. DON’T FORGET 4-IN-A-BAR+1 playing Smooth Jazz this Sunday afternoon, 25th February 2018, 3:00-6:00pm at Ye Olde Whyte Lyon, see ‘PAGE’ above, next to ‘HOME’

Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics

I just don’t know how I am going to be at the club tonight, because I was up watching the Winter Olympics till about 4am.  I haven’t been well enough to watch from the beginning of the Olympics, but recovered very quickly.  I loved the figure skating, the curling and speed skiing (well all events).  But have to write Farnborough Jazz Clubs congratulations to Don Parson for the men’s skeleton final and winning the first medal of the 2018 Winter Olympics for Great Britain.  I will return to add……..
