{"id":71,"date":"2013-09-26T15:45:53","date_gmt":"2013-09-26T15:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=71"},"modified":"2019-11-01T15:06:51","modified_gmt":"2019-11-01T15:06:51","slug":"dave-hewitts-condonians-friday-20th-september-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=71","title":{"rendered":"Dave Hewitt\u2019s Condonians, 20\/09\/2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>DAVE HEWITT\u2019S CONDONIANS<\/b> certainly entertained us here at Farnborough on <b>Friday, 20<sup>th<\/sup> September 2013<\/b>.\u00a0 Trombonist <b>DAVE <\/b>had booked <b>ANDY DICKENS<\/b> (trumpet &amp; vocals), <b>JULIAN MARC STRINGLE<\/b> (reeds &amp; vocals) <b>RONNIE BOWATER<\/b> (piano), <b>ANDY LAWRENCE<\/b> (string bass) and <b>ROD BROWN<\/b> (drums). \u00a0They are all brilliant musicians of course. The repertoire started with that great lively number called \u2018At the Jazz Band Ball\u2019, which certainly got us in the mood.\u00a0 I have selected a few numbers to give you a flavour of the evening (not from being the best, but ones I had a moment to jot down).\u00a0 There was \u2018A Kiss to Build a Dream On\u2019 with a marvellous trumpet solo from Andy \u2013 well, super solos from all the front line.\u00a0 More came, such as \u2018Big Butter and Egg Man\u2019 and that Jelly Roll Morton number called \u2018Whining Boy Blues\u2019 (I can recall Andy (D) hitting top \u2018C\u2019 so smoothly).\u00a0 I wrote \u2018lovely jubbly\u2019 against the next (Fats Waller) number called \u2018Black and Blue\u2019.\u00a0 Then came a favourite of mine called \u2018A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square\u2019, which was absolutely wonderful.\u00a0 (It brought back a time when I walked bare-footed in Berkeley Square &#8211; Keith and I had just got together. nearly 30years ago and were \u2018painting the town\u2019 \u2013 oh lovely memories)\u2026.\u00a0 back to Friday, they then played \u2018Lou-Easy-An-I-A\u2019, Dave played his baritone horn (excellent), plus Rod gave a brilliant drum solo.\u00a0 Keith, who was dancing with me at the time, got carried away and started tap dancing and moving his hands to the drums, so funny. and \u2018Buddies Habits\u2019 which has a very fast tempo, fabulous.\u00a0 Next was Julian\u2019s Solo, playing an amazing tenor sax to \u2018Back Home Again in Indiana\u2019, what a talent (<b>and<\/b> he can sing too)!\u00a0 \u2018I Can\u2019t Get Started With You\u2019 was superb, it\u2019s such a lovely number.\u00a0 Then came their finale \u2018Bourbon Street Parade\u2019 and was certainly a fantastic number to finish on.\u00a0 It has a really good beat, so plenty of dancers enjoyed it.\u00a0 I hope you can visualise how marvellous the evening was, so that maybe some of you reading this will be tempted to check us out for yourselves, as to what a fun time we all have here at Farnborough Jazz Club, here in Kent.<\/p>\n<p>Keep jazzing.<\/p>\n<p>Diane and Keith<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>\u2018A Kiss to Build a Dream On\u2019 \u2013 (m) Harry Ruby, (l) Bert Kalmar &amp; Oscar Hammerstein II (1935)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square\u2019 \u2013 (m) Manning Sherwin, (l) Eric Maschwitz (1939)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018At The Jazz Band Ball\u2019 \u2013 (m) Nick LaRocca, Larry Shields (1917) (l) added by Johnny Mercer (1950)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Back Home Again in Indiana\u2019 \u2013 Ballard MacDonald &amp; James F.
