{"id":540,"date":"2014-04-17T20:13:42","date_gmt":"2014-04-17T20:13:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=540"},"modified":"2015-04-11T11:29:58","modified_gmt":"2015-04-11T11:29:58","slug":"phoenix-dixieland-jazz-band-easters-good-friday-18th-april-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=540","title":{"rendered":"Phoenix Dixieland Jazz Band, Good Friday, 18th April 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>PHOENIX DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND<\/b> certainly entertained us on <b>Easter Good Friday, 18<sup>th<\/sup> April 2014<\/b> here at the <b>Farnborough Jazz Club<\/b>.\u00a0 We received a few phone calls during the week, from people who haven\u2019t been before, checking if we had jazz on Friday, being Easter.\u00a0 They also asked if it gets busy, but as we told them, Good Friday is always an unknown quantity, as it is \u2018family time\u2019.\u00a0 Many people go away, or have their family come to stay and can\u2019t get out to the jazz.\u00a0 So it was nice to have a wonderful turnout \u2013 always nice for a band to have a decent crowd to play to. \u00a0\u00a0Leader <b>ROBIN COOMBS<\/b> had his excellent line-up with <b>PAUL HIGGS<\/b>\u00a0on trumpet, <b>BILL TODD<\/b> on trombone,\u00a0<b>DAVE BARNES<\/b>\u00a0on piano,\u00a0<b>ROGER CURPHEY<\/b> on double bass,\u00a0<b>JOHN STUART<\/b>\u00a0on banjo &amp; guitar and\u00a0<b>ALAN CLARKE<\/b>\u00a0on drums.\u00a0 Last week, I suggested as the weather is beautiful, to do your gardening during the day, then mosey on over to us for some enjoyable dancing to jazz.\u00a0 Beautiful, because looks like you all took heed of me, hmmm.\u00a0 Once again, Robin was a little worried the dancing didn\u2019t commence straight away, but it does always takes a drink (or two) to settle in and it wasn\u2019t long before we were all up and leaping about.\u00a0 Anyway, it is nice to just listen as well, especially with such tunes as Benny Goodman\u2019s \u2018A Smooth One\u2019 and \u2018You Took Advantage of Me\u2019. \u00a0Another number, sung by Bill, was \u2018I\u2019m Confessin\u2019 That I Love You\u2019 and I noted Paul played lovely (muted) trumpet. \u00a0Bix Beiderbecke\u2019s hit, \u2018At the Jazz Band Ball\u2019, certainly was one for the \u2018fast\u2019 dancers, super. \u00a0\u00a0A tune definitely worth a mention was \u2018The Charleston\u2019 to which our line-dancers performed a Charleston dance &#8211; well, sort of!\u00a0 Then Paul gave a wonderful intro to \u2018West End Blues\u2019 (famed by Louis Armstrong) with solos fabulously played by everyone. \u00a0Next, I noted one of Chris Barber\u2019s hits called \u2018Stevedore Stomp\u2019 to which they all played brilliantly, again bringing on the dancers.\u00a0 Dave sang \u2018Fats Waller\u2019s \u2018Twenty Four Robbers\u2019.\u00a0 He introduced it and demonstrated to us the words to join in with, and of course, being a rum lot, we all did \u2013 great fun.\u00a0 Jack Teagarden\u2019s famed \u2018A Hundred Years from Today\u2019 came next.\u00a0 It is a favourite of Keith\u2019s and a lovely foxtrot for the slow dancers.\u00a0 A perfect evening and surely must have set everyone up to face the rest of the week (well it did for me).\u00a0 One last thing, something for your diary, the band\u2019s next date here is to be 25<sup>th<\/sup> July 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nothing like \u2018live\u2019 entertainment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Diane and Keith<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018A Hundred Years from Today\u2019 \u2013 Victor Young, Ned Washington and Joe Young (1933)<\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018A Smooth One\u2019 \u2013 Benny Goodman (1941)<\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018At The Jazz Band Ball\u2019 \u2013 (m) Nick LaRocca, Larry Shields (1916) (l\u2019s added 1950 by Johnny Mercer)<\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018Blame it on My Youth\u2019 &#8211; (m) Oscar Levant, (l) Edward Heyman (1934<\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018I\u2019m Confessin\u2019 (That I Love You\u2019) \u2013 (m) Ellis Reynolds &amp; Doc Daugherty, (l) Al J.
