{"id":515,"date":"2014-04-04T11:30:18","date_gmt":"2014-04-04T11:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=515"},"modified":"2015-05-06T20:15:27","modified_gmt":"2015-05-06T20:15:27","slug":"bob-dwyers-bix-pieces-friday-28th-march-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=515","title":{"rendered":"Bob Dwyer\u2019s Bix &#038; Pieces, Friday, 28th March 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">\u2018BOB DWYER\u2019S BIX &amp; PIECES\u2019<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\"> produced some lovely entertainment for us on <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">FRIDAY, 28<sup>th<\/sup> MARCH 2014 <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">here at the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">.\u00a0 They are such a popular band, with leader <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">BOB<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\"> on trombone &amp; vocals, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">MAX EMMONS<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\"> on trumpet, harmonica &amp; vocals, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">BERNIE HOLDEN<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\"> on clarinet &amp; sax, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">HUGH CROZIER <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">on piano &amp; vocals, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">JOHN BAYNE<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\"> on double bass\/bass sax, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">NICK SINGER <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">on banjo &amp; vocals and (band leader from last week) <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">LAURIE CHESCOE,<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\"> on drums, whistle &amp; grins of course.\u00a0 I said last week, they always create a great atmosphere and they surely did!\u00a0 Bob has a beautiful voice and he demonstrated that fact when he sang <em>\u2018Why don\u2019t You Go Down to New Orleans\u2019<\/em> (there is a Leroy Jones version on YouTube). They played <em>\u2018Alexander\u2019s Ragtime Band\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Obviously we all sang and danced to this Irving Berlin one [<\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">10wks @#1 for duet Arthur Collins &amp; Byron Harlan<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem;\">], I remember Johnny Ray\u2019s version, do you agree?\u00a0 A Bix Beiderbecke number, called <em>\u2018River Boat Shuffle\u2019<\/em>, was my next number to mention.\u00a0 I had written down \u2018a brilliant fast number\u2019.\u00a0 Hugh sang the next tune<em> \u2018Hard Hearted Hannah\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 He sang it softly, with such feeling. \u00a0Bob sang the next number, \u2018The Song is Ended (But the Memory Lingers On)\u2019. \u00a0Then he sang a number called <em>\u2018Nice To Know You Care\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 It was written by a dear friend of ours, Leslie Baguley (30 years ago, Keith played drums with him regularly).\u00a0 A while ago, Keith told Bob about this number, asking him to sing it one day.\u00a0 It was lovely to hear it performed again (please read special tribute page for Leslie Baguley).\u00a0 <em>\u2018(What Did I Do To Be So) Black and Blue\u2019<\/em> was another terrific number they performed and sung by Bob.\u00a0 I wrote down that Max sang and what a powerful jazz voice he has.\u00a0 <em>\u2018Puttin\u2019 On the Ritz\u2019<\/em> brought on the line dancers, well, four (oh dear). \u00a0Anyway, a great number.\u00a0 The next one is a great favourite of ours by Bob\u2019s band, which was <em>\u2018Freight Train Blues\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 They sound so like a train \u2013 just brilliant, with Max playing harmonica to the tune and the rest of the band making great train-like sounds fabulous.\u00a0 Hugh then featured on piano with a number called<em> \u2018The Pearls\u2019<\/em> by Jelly Roll Morton.\u00a0 JRM is said to say it was one of his most difficult composition to play, so well done Hugh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There\u2019s nothing like \u2018live\u2019 music, bring a friend when you come next week for George \u2018Kid\u2019 Tidiman\u2019s All Stars!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Diane and Keith<\/p>\n<h6>\u2018Alexander\u2019s Ragtime Band\u2019 \u2013 Irving Berlin (1911) <i>(10wks @#1 for duet Arthur Collins &amp; Byron Harlan)<\/i><\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Freight Train Blues\u2019 \u2013 Thomas A.
