His original proposal was to move the clocks forward by 80 minutes, in 20-minute weekly steps on Sundays in April and by the reverse procedure in September.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Summer_Time#cite_note-6\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc; font-size: small;\">[6]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> In 1916 BST began on 21 May and ended on 1 October.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Summer_Time#cite_note-7\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc; font-size: small;\">[7]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> Willett never got to see his idea implemented as he died in early 1915.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Periods_of_deviation\" class=\"mw-headline\">Periods of deviation<\/span><span class=\"mw-editsection\"><span class=\"mw-editsection-bracket\">[<\/span><a title=\"Edit section: Periods of deviation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=British_Summer_Time&amp;action=edit&amp;section=3\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">edit<\/span><\/a><span class=\"mw-editsection-bracket\">]<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In 1940, during the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Second World War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_World_War\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Second World War<\/span><\/a>, the clocks in Britain were not put back by an hour at the end of summer. In subsequent years, clocks continued to be advanced by one hour each spring and put back by an hour each autumn until July 1945. During these summers, therefore, Britain was two hours ahead of GMT and operating on <i>British Double Summer Time<\/i> (BDST). The clocks were brought back in line with GMT at the end of summer in 1945. In 1947, due to severe fuel shortages, clocks were advanced by one hour on two occasions during the spring, and put back by one hour on two occasions during the autumn, meaning that Britain was back on BDST during that summer.<sup class=\"noprint Inline-Template\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">[<\/span><i><a title=\"Wikipedia:Verifiability\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Verifiability\"><span title=\"The material near this tag failed verification of its source citation(s). (March 2012)\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc; font-size: small;\">not in citation given<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/i><span style=\"font-size: small;\">]<\/span><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Summer_Time#cite_note-8\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc; font-size: small;\">[8]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>An inquiry during the winter of 1959\u201360, in which 180 national organisations were consulted, revealed a slight preference for a change to all-year GMT+1, but instead the length of summer time was extended as a trial.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Summer_Time#cite_note-9\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc; font-size: small;\">[9]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> A further inquiry during 1966\u201367 led the government of <a title=\"Harold Wilson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Wilson\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Harold Wilson<\/span><\/a> to introduce the <b>British Standard Time<\/b> experiment, with Britain remaining on GMT+1 throughout the year.
