{"id":429,"date":"2014-02-12T10:00:16","date_gmt":"2014-02-12T10:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=429"},"modified":"2015-02-11T12:09:04","modified_gmt":"2015-02-11T12:09:04","slug":"mike-barrys-xxl-jazz-band-7012014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=429","title":{"rendered":"Mike Barry\u2019s XXL Jazz Band, 7\/01\/2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">The Farnborough Jazz Club <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">proudly presented<\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> MIKE BARRY\u2019S XXL JAZZ BAND<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> on <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Friday, 7<sup>th<\/sup> February 2014<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">.\u00a0 The band\u2019s leader and trumpeter <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Mike<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">, had with him reeds player <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">JOHNNY ROGERS,<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> trombonist <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">REX O&#8217;DELL<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">, pianist <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">GRAHAM BARTON<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">, double bassist <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">ROGER CURPHEY<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> and drummer <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">PAUL BUDD<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">. \u00a0\u00a0Our audience certainly jazzed it up on the dance floor!\u00a0 Everyone said what a fantastic band and consequent evening it was, whether dancers, or not.\u00a0 Now let\u2019s tell you how the evening\u2019s fun occurred.\u00a0 My first jotting was of \u2018Basin Street Blues\u2019.\u00a0 Mike sung this one and Roger played double bass with a bow, gorgeous (the playing &#8211; not Roger &#8211; although he is too, ha).\u00a0 Rex sang \u2018Everybody Loves My Baby\u2019.\u00a0 Then that great song \u2018Saint Louis Blues\u2019 came next (which was said to have inspired the Foxtrot dance).\u00a0 It was sung by Rex, with Johnny playing sax.\u00a0 Then Johnny sang \u2018Keeping out Of Mischief Now\u2019.\u00a0 He has been suffering with tonsillitis, but he did a marvellous job.\u00a0 Now the next song was called \u2018My Bucket\u2019s got a Hole in it\u2019, famed by Hank Williams and later in 1970 by Louis Armstrong.\u00a0 Mike and Rex sung in harmony, managing to interject a bit of \u2018You Keep a-knocking, But You Can\u2019t Come In \u2013 fantastic.\u00a0 Mike then sang \u2018Marching through Georgia\u2019.\u00a0 After that, Graham featured on piano, with his brilliant composition of boogie woogie and we named it \u2018Graham\u2019s Boogie\u2019.\u00a0 Everyone got up to dance and all of us completely let our hair down too.\u00a0 Fancy following that, but Rex did, by singing, in the inimitable style of Louis Armstrong, to \u2018Aint Misbehaving\u2019 and then to put the icing on the cake came \u2018Dr Jazz\u2019 sung by Lil Hardin (Louis Armstrong\u2019s second wife) nah, I\u2019m sure they announced it wrong, surely it <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">WAS<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> Johnny, sounded like Lil though!\u00a0 What a lovely lot of fun.
