{"id":421,"date":"2014-01-30T14:30:12","date_gmt":"2014-01-30T14:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=421"},"modified":"2016-02-09T11:39:43","modified_gmt":"2016-02-09T11:39:43","slug":"chez-chestermans-band-of-brothers-24012014-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=421","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Chez Chesterman\u2019s Band of Brothers\u2019, 24\/01\/2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018<b>CHEZ CHESTERMAN\u2019S BAND OF BROTHERS\u2019<\/b> were at our <b>Farnborough Jazz Club (Kent)<\/b> on <b>Friday, 24th January 2014<\/b>.\u00a0 The guys in the band were trumpeter\/vocalist and leader <b>CHEZ<\/b>, with <b>GEOFF COLE <\/b>on trombone &amp; vocals, <b>ROY JAMES<\/b> on banjo &amp; guitar, <b>TERRY LEWIS<\/b> on double bass and <b>BILL FINCH<\/b> on drums. \u00a0Our crowd was somewhat diminished for one reason or another, but not enough to spoil the evening. \u00a0Chez and Geoff played their \u2018socks off\u2019, to which we tip our hats to, including the rest of the band.\u00a0 There was plenty of dancing going on, albeit some numbers were just listened to.\u00a0 They put on a good repertoire and here are a few numbers to give you a feel of the evening. \u00a0The first number I jotted down was called \u2018Down in Honky Tonk Town\u2019, with Geoff (who has a great jazz voice) singing and Roy playing banjo.\u00a0 \u00a0King Oliver\u2019s \u2018Riverside Blues\u2019 was another tune that lured the dancers on. \u00a0Chez (who also has that wonderful unique jazz voice) sang the next number (plus a few of us in the audience too), called \u2018Down by the Riverside (Study War No More)\u2019.\u00a0 Some of you will know folk singer, Peter Seeger had a big \u2018hit\u2019 with this number in 1956, with his slightly changed lyrics and of course you may be aware, he died this Sunday (27<sup>th<\/sup>) at the age of 94yrs.\u00a0 Back to our jazz, the next numbers I jotted down were \u2018Bugle Boy March\u2019, \u2018A Kiss to Build a Dream On\u2019 (Roy played guitar) and \u2018The Sheik of Araby\u2019, all fabulous numbers.\u00a0 Then Chez sang to a beautiful ballad called \u2018I Can\u2019t Sleep\u2019, and all the dancers (and non-dancers) came out to dance.\u00a0 The writer of this wonderful tune (\u2018Montana\u2019 Taylor) never enjoyed fame, disappearing from the spotlight (twice) for years at a time, dying at the early age of 51yrs, in 1954 (I say \u201c<i>play it again please Sam<\/i>\u201d).\u00a0 Geoff sang and Roy played guitar to the next number called \u2018Oh Lady Be Good\u2019. \u00a0Then Fats Waller\u2019s number \u2018Fair and Square In Love\u2019, sung by Chez, was their last number and so our dancers all came on the dance floor.\u00a0 So many of you thanked Chez, saying how much you enjoyed the evening.\u00a0 It is so nice for musicians to be told afterwards, it makes their evening complete and helps them on their long journey home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You have no need to read this bit, but before I close, I wanted to mention a weird thing that happened whilst preparing this newsletter!\u00a0\u00a0 As you know, weird things often happen to me \u2013 of course just coincidences (or is it just that I am weird \u2013 well no need to agree so readily!)\u00a0 \u00a0First of all, I was chatting to the band (having had lots of little mishaps), I mentioned having seen Anthony Newley\u2019s (1961) play \u2018Stop the World, I Want to Get Off\u2019.\u00a0 I recalled not understanding the meaning then, even though I found it very clever and funny (Anna Quale\u2019s debut I recall).\u00a0 Anyhow, I visited Les Hanscombe\u2019s Tailgate Jazz Band on \u2018Youtube\u2019\u00a0 to prepare for next week\u2019s newsletter.\u00a0 Pay a visit and you will hear Les announcing the number \u2018Don\u2019t Give up the Ship\u2019 (they have a CD named by this title).\u00a0 Les says this number apparently was to be called \u2018Stop the World, I want to Get Off\u2019, but it was too long a title. \u00a0Visit (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=86HCWRK2R0M&amp;list=PL7E111545F36F589E\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=86HCWRK2R0M&amp;list=PL7E111545F36F589E<\/a>\u00a0(Tune No: 7, recorded at Harwich Electric Palace Cinema -Harwich).\u00a0 Creepy aye? \u00a0I haven\u2019t mentioned the play in years! \u00a0By the way, I fully understand the meaning of the play now!\u00a0 Hmmm!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oh wow, another one!!!!\u00a0 I came back to finish this newsletter this morning (Thursday).\u00a0 Last Friday morning, I bought two DVD\u2019s (digressing, one I mentioned on the mike \u2013 reading out \u2018Daddy Long Legs\u2019 which says \u2018Contains no sex, violence or bad language\u2019, now that\u2019s a rarity aye?\u00a0 Joyful called out \u201cI bet Keith won\u2019t watch it\u201d!\u00a0 I watched the other DVD (\u2018South Pacific\u2019) last night.\u00a0 What is weird you ask?\u00a0 Well, I have just realised I saw that film (&amp; play) in 1958 \u2013 the year I thought I had seen Anthony Newley\u2019s play (standing corrected this a.m. to 1961).\u00a0 The composers of \u2018South Pacific\u2019 were Rodgers &amp; Hammerstein.\u00a0 What\u2019s so weird, you are asking?\u00a0 The band played and I chose to jot down \u2018A Kiss to build a Dream on\u2019 \u2013 composer?
