PHOENIX DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND<\/strong><\/span> were on top form at Farnborough Jazz Club<\/strong> <\/span>on Friday 19th<\/span><\/sup> August 2016<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0 They\u2019re a wonderful 7-pce band who certainly know how to make an evening really sparkle.\u00a0 Although we love and missed Paul Higgs on trumpet, it was a fantastic surprise to have MIKE BARRY<\/span><\/b> take over on trumpet.\u00a0 He seemed to play better than ever, perhaps being relaxed, not having to run his own bands (with an ‘s’). \u00a0So here are the super musicians we had playing here, giving us a brilliant evening. \u00a0<\/strong>As already mentioned, we had MIKE BARRY<\/span><\/b><\/strong>\u00a0on trumpet, plus CHARLES SHERWOOD<\/span><\/b> <\/strong>on clarinet, BILL TODD<\/strong><\/span> on trombone, ALAN CLARKE<\/b><\/span><\/b>\u00a0on drums, DAVE BARNES<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>on piano, ROGER CURPHEY<\/strong> <\/span>on double bass and JOHN <\/strong><\/span>STUART<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>on banjo & guitar.\u00a0 I know I always say it, but again, what a wonderful evening of fun jazz.<\/p>\n

\u2018<\/em><\/span>At The Jazz Band Ball\u2019<\/em> <\/span>was their starter for ten.\u00a0 Everyone taking brilliant solos \u2013 certainly a great number to greet people arriving with.\u00a0 Two people who had arrived out of the blue, were the lovely dancing couple, Linda and John, who travel, I believer from Hastings\u00a0to get to us, got up to the very next number,\u00a0 \u2018Dr Jazz\u2019<\/em><\/span>, what a great beginning, with the band giving wonderful solos everywhere again.<\/p>\n

My next choice to relate to you was their lovely version of \u2018Chinatown, My Chinatown\u2019<\/em><\/span>, with their fantastic Chinese intimations (the only thing missing for me was \u2018Ying tong, Ying tong\u2019 etc,) – great drum solo from Alan.\u00a0 Then Bill sang \u2018Rockin\u2019 Chair\u2019<\/em><\/span>. \u00a0I do love that Hoagy Carmichael song.<\/p>\n

Then it was Dave\u2019s turn to sing and he chose to do \u2018I Can\u2019t Give You Anything But Love Baby\u2019<\/span>,<\/em> with the \u2018front line\u2019 singing \u2018Shuby Duby\u2019, ha.\u00a0 Wow did they boom out the next number brilliantly too – \u2018That\u2019s A Plenty\u2019<\/em><\/span>. \u00a0Where do they get their energies from?<\/p>\n

The tune that followed was a feature one for Charles, who excelled himself with \u2018Petite Fleur\u2019<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 He has mastered his clarinet to a beautiful level, so a joy to listen to.\u00a0 The next number that I love, \u2018Someday, You\u2019ll Be Sorry\u2019<\/em> <\/span>is one that Keith and I sing to one-another (a lot) in unison (for obvious reasons, so have to mention it) ha.\u00a0 Plus their last one was \u2018Bourbon Street Parade\u2019<\/em><\/span>, Oh yeah.\u00a0 Wonderful!\u00a0 Another lovely dancing great. \u00a0So if you missed the evening \u2026 and many of you did, due to your holidays (yuk \u2013 all coming back rusty looking), this is what you missed \u2026 Mike was great with these guys, being so relaxed and obviously old muckers too.\u00a0 Anyway, hopefully we will see you all back soon.<\/p>\n
