JACKIE FREE\u2019S CHICAGOANS <\/strong><\/span>appeared at our FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong> <\/span>for the very first time on 5th August 2016<\/span>.<\/strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0 What a bountiful of talent in this band.\u00a0 Last week, I said I was quite excited at the thought at them coming, because it is always fun to have new sounds at the club. \u00a0I just have to put this photograph of Jackie Free as a 24year old, playing with the legend himself.\u00a0 What an accolade Jackie.<\/p>\n

\"Jackie<\/a>

Jackie Free plays with Louis Armstrong in London, 1956. Jackie said it was the highlight of his musical career. He would have been just 24years of age. \u00a9Jackie Free.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

So now let me introduce you to the\u00a0musicians in\u00a0Jackie’s band.\u00a0\u00a0First of all, JACKIE FREE<\/strong><\/span> himself plays trombone, euphonium &vocals.\u00a0\u00a0Then, with him was (an old friend)\u00a0MIKE COTTON<\/strong><\/span> on trumpet, JOHN CROCKER<\/strong><\/span> on clarinet &saxes, TIM HUSKISSON<\/strong><\/span> on piano, MURRAY SALMON<\/strong><\/span> on double bass and\u00a0\u00a0MARTIN GUY<\/strong><\/span> on drums.<\/p>\n

They have all played here individually with other bands, apart from Murray.\u00a0 We were originally to have Pete Rudeforth on trumpet, but he\u00a0needed to (understandably) bail out for a gig with Chris Barber in Belgium, then we were to have Gary Wood.\u00a0 Unfortunately Gary was taken ill at the last minute and unable to make it, so Mike kindly stepped in.\u00a0 Phew, what a line-up we had anyway, aye, one you just couldn\u2019t miss.\u00a0 John Crocker had been abroad for several weeks, so asked if we had missed him.\u00a0 I of course, said \u2018No\u2019 (with a question sound to my voice).\u00a0 \u2018Fickle\u2019 was JC\u2019s remark back \u2013 ha ha.\u00a0 Of course anyone would miss him \u2013 what a player aye!\u00a0 Well he was with Chris Barber for 30yrs, plus he played for Elton John.\u00a0 With such players, Jackie had to be special, to command such talent and so, yes it was a special evening and if you missed it, hard luck.<\/p>\n

Let me dangle some of what was played!\u00a0 \u00a0They began with \u2018Back In Your Own Back Yard\u2019<\/em><\/span>, a happy number sung by Jackie, hey another super jazz voice (so many great voices about).\u00a0 My next to mention to you is \u2018Black and Blue\u2019<\/span>, quite a favourite with most, especially with this lovely hot weather, as it is a slow\u00a0tune and allows us to dance with far less chance\u00a0of\u00a0collapsing!!<\/p>\n

I must mention John\u2019s special feature.\u00a0 Tim played a beautiful intro, with John playing exquisite tenor sax to \u2018Tangerine\u2019<\/em><\/span>, mouth-watering stuff (he can repeat it anytime he likes here).\u00a0 Then came almost the highlight of the evening (if everything else hadn\u2019t been so wonderful before).\u00a0(I know the picture shows John playing clarinet).\u00a0 Anyway, Jackie asked if he may play the euphonium.\u00a0 He used to play it over forty years ago, then gave it to his son.\u00a0 When he found out his son still had it, he retrieved it and found he could still master it.\u00a0 The tune he played is such a beautiful one and he played it superbly.\u00a0 How on earth could he worry we might object!!!!!\u00a0 The number was \u2018Blame It On My Youth\u2019<\/em><\/span>, gorgeous.\u00a0Such a shame we didn’t have\u00a0a photo of him playing it, but next time perhaps.\u00a0\u00a0They played \u2018Chicago\u2019<\/em> <\/span>next and we managed to get a little line-dancing in.<\/p>\n

I remember the next number had some lovely solos, but would like to make special mention of\u00a0Martin and his fantastic drum solo with \u2018Struttin With Some Barbeque\u2019<\/em> <\/span>and of course they all excelled with \u2018At The Jazz Band Ball\u2019<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n

It was just lovely to have Mike back in the old place again, not\u00a0having seen him for possibly twenty years, or more.\u00a0 So to hear him featured with \u2018Georgia On My Mind\u2019<\/em> <\/span>was lovely, his trumpet playing was so pure.\u00a0 He then sang the next one too, \u2018Kansas City, Here I Come\u2019<\/em> <\/span>and even topped it by playing a mouth organ too. Hmmm.<\/p>\n
