We had a good turn-out for the \u2018LORD NAPIER HOT SHOTS\u2019<\/strong><\/span>,<\/strong> who entertained us here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong> <\/span>on Friday 29th July 2016<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 The boys in the band \u00a0were band leader MIKE JACKSON<\/strong> <\/span> on trumpet &vocals,\u00a0MIKE DUCKWORTH<\/b><\/span>\u00a0on trombone, PAT GLOVER<\/strong> <\/span>on reeds &vocals, JOHN STUART<\/b><\/span> on banjo & guitar, MICK SCRIVEN<\/strong> <\/span>on double bass, bass sax &vocals, plus BILL TRAXLER<\/strong> <\/span> on drums.<\/p>\n

Last week, I said these guys have played together for so many years, obviously showing they have a feel for their music \u2013 good old traditional jazz to dance and drink to.\u00a0 So you obviously all agreed with me and some of you even turned up before we had set up \u2013 lovely enthusiasm thanks.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how the evening went.\u00a0 They began with a happy little number called \u2018All I Do Is Dream Of You\u2019<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 I remember Gene Kelly singing this one and was surprised to read that the film negatives of \u2018Singing in the Rain\u2019<\/span> <\/em>were destroyed in a studio fire in 1978, although prints of the film survived, thank goodness, it is one<\/u><\/strong> of my all-time favourites.\u00a0 I missed making notes for the next few numbers, with people arriving \u2013 even wrote \u2018Chris\u2019 sang a song (but missed writing the name of the song) and they didn\u2019t have a Chris in the band \u2013ha (they\u2019re coming to take me away soon!) Oh yes Chris was in the audience!!!!<\/p>\n

Anyway, I did write Mike (J) sang \u2018I\u2019m Sorry I Made You Cry\u2019<\/em><\/span>, a tune that hasn\u2019t been played here before and he sang it beautifully.\u00a0 Then came a good old trad\u2019 number \u2018Royal Garden Blues\u2019<\/em> <\/span>and on came the dancers.\u00a0 Not only did we enjoy it, but you could hear they enjoyed playing it too.\u00a0 We were back on the dance floor with our \u2018Farnborough Charleston Line-dancers\u2019 to the \u2018Charleston\u2019<\/em> <\/span>and do we have fun \u2013 not sure if anyone finds us in their way \u2013 view-wise, ha!<\/p>\n

I jotted down that Mick played big bertha (bass sax) \u2013 fabulous.\u00a0 I gave my usual three ticks to the next number \u2018Lou-i-Easy-An-I-A’<\/em><\/span>, <\/em>which meant they all did a lovely job with playing.\u00a0 It is another happy jaunty number, so again plenty of dancing.\u00a0 The next tune, \u2018Hello Central, Give Me Dr Jazz\u2019<\/span>,<\/em> must have had the dancers up too, including me because I didn\u2019t write anything, except Mick sang and I recall he also has a great jazz voice! \u00a0\u2018Let Me Call You Sweetheart\u2019<\/span><\/em> was another tune with three ticks, but I think I was enjoying myself, I forgot to write anything (Cinzano time, I think \u2013 ha).\u00a0 Then came \u2018Somebody Loves Me\u2019<\/em> <\/span>and was sung by Pat who, as I have said before, has a very romantic voice and I had put my three ticks.\u00a0 Lovely, because again he sang the last number, being that Fat\u2019s Waller\u2019s number \u2018You Meet The Nicest People In Your Dreams\u2019<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 Oh, yes, congratulations Pam and Pat, on becoming great-grandparents again by two separate daughter-in-laws. \u00a0One born lunchtime Wednesday, the other early Thursday morning! That makes eight great-grand and nineteen grandchildren altogether, wow (congrats too, to Christine, who also had a great-grandchild).<\/p>\n
