Oh happy day, we had the talented BARRY PALSER\u2019S SUPER SIX<\/strong><\/span> back again at Farnborough Jazz Club<\/strong>, Kent<\/strong> on<\/span> Friday, 15th<\/span><\/sup> July 2016<\/strong>.\u00a0 Band leader <\/span>BARRY<\/strong><\/span>, who plays trombone &vocals, had GARY WOOD<\/span> <\/strong>on trumpet (Gary was last here 4th March\u00a0with Jonny Boston’s Hot Jazz), plus \u00a0GOFF DUBBER<\/span><\/b>\u00a0on clarinet, TONY PITT<\/strong> <\/span>on banjo, ANDY LAWRENCE<\/strong> <\/span>on double bass and JOHN TYSON<\/strong> <\/span>on drums.<\/p>\n

I told you not to miss a minute of their playing and of course, you all turned up to enjoy Barry\u2019s band.\u00a0 Such a delight to have practically a full house.\u00a0 Barry is such a great personality and we all love him!\u00a0 Poor ol\u2019 things though.\u00a0 His wife, (sound engineer\u00a0and roadie) Bridget, unfortunately broke her leg (way back in March) which hasn\u2019t healed yet and has it in a brace.\u00a0 As most of you know, Barry had a hip replacement \u2013 Bridget\u2019s left leg and Barry\u2019s right hip!\u00a0 They want to know if there is somewhere they can sign up for a three-legged race please?\u00a0 That\u2019s musician\u2019s humour for you \u2013 it has been hard for them, but they joke about it (like someone else I know (J)!)\u00a0 Now to try and choose which numbers to tell you about (they were all good!)<\/p>\n

Well, I\u2019ll start the ball rolling with \u2018It\u2019s Only A Paper Moon\u2019<\/em><\/span>, because Barry played and sang it to Bridget (I think he\u00a0might love her, don\u2019t you think?).\u00a0 Then Barry dedicated their next number to someone he played with many years ago \u2013 Stan (who has gone now) and that tune was \u2018Hindustan\u2019<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 I wrote in my notes, \u2018Rip Roaring and fab\u2019 with lovely drumming from John and gave it three ticks, meaning brilliant!\u00a0 I also gave three ticks to the next number, \u2018As Long As I Live\u2019<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 The floor was packed with our line-dancing and just so much fun.\u00a0 Keith said this was one of his favourites, reminding him of his \u2018Steering Wheel Club\u2019 days in Chelsea, because he used to play it all the time there.\u00a0 \u2018Hello Dolly\u2019<\/em><\/span> was sung next by Barry and was the number to bring on the dancers \u2013 also a packed floor.<\/p>\n

I must mention a lovely little family \u2013 Ann and Mike Witt\u2019s family\u00a0(our volunteer\u00a0photographer), were visiting from Sidney, Australia.\u00a0 Their young granddaughter, Jos\u2019, danced to the next number \u2018Route 66\u2019<\/em><\/span>, (sung by Gary).\u00a0 In fact she danced to several numbers with her Mum, Karen, (with Dad – Andy – looking on, proudly).\u00a0What\u00a0lovely dancers they are too.\u00a0 We have a\u00a0wonderful picture of this, but it keeps loading up sideways (another Windows 10 quirk\u00a0– I will work out what is wrong\u00a0and\u00a0add it at a later date).<\/p>\n

Then a \u2018Jack Teagarden\u2019 number \u2018Music To Love By\u2019<\/em><\/span> was a feature number for Goff, which he sang beautifully.\u00a0 What lovely playing Goff – great banjo too Tony.\u00a0 Oh I have missed off some wonderful tunes (nearly giving their whole repertoire away!)\u00a0 However, I must mention Satchmo\u2019s number, \u2018Mac The Knife\u2019<\/em><\/span>, sung by Barry \u2013 what a number.\u00a0 They all excelled, as they did with the next song, one of my favourite jazz numbers, \u2018Christopher Columbus\u2019<\/em><\/span>, I could hear it played, time after time.<\/p>\n

Then came a feature tune for Gary.\u00a0 The number being \u2018Fly Me To The Moon\u2019<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 Wow Gary, marvellous \u2013 say no more!\u00a0 Now although there was another brilliant number in between, I\u2019ll go to their last number \u2018When The Saints Go Marching In\u2019<\/span><\/em> and as you can guess, it was a brilliant one to end the evening.\u00a0 Everyone took a time leaving the club, as they were all \u2018buzzing\u2019 (still on a high).\u00a0 Thank you \u2018Super Six\u2019, lovely stuff.<\/p>\n
