Oh what a fabulous evening with the\u00a0\u2018YERBA BUENA CELEBRATION JAZZ BAND\u2019<\/strong><\/span> here at Farnborough<\/span> Jazz Club <\/strong>on<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Friday, 3rd<\/sup> June<\/span> 2016<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0 I mentioned they are an 8-pce jazz band, reflecting the great \u2018Lu Watters\u2019 Yerba Buena Jazz Band.\u00a0 They were brilliant, sounding like a big band.\u00a0 DAVE RANCE <\/strong><\/span>was on 1st<\/sup> trumpet (plus sang), MIKE BARRY<\/span> <\/strong>was 2nd<\/sup> trumpet (who also sang), BRIAN WHITE<\/strong><\/span> on clarinet, GEORGE \u2018KID\u2019 TIDIMAN<\/strong> <\/span>on trombone (\u2018Kid\u2019 was in their original<\/span> band), HUGH CROZIER<\/strong> <\/span>on piano, PETE LAY<\/strong> <\/span>on drums, JOHN ARTHY<\/strong> <\/span>on tuba and NICK SINGER<\/strong><\/span> played banjo.<\/p>\n

They\u00a0are known\u00a0produce great dancing tempos and so not really surprising that both our visiting dancing couples (Linda & John, plus Jane &Alan) turned up together.\u00a0 As I suspected, they knew one-another from visiting many clubs.\u00a0 I\u2019m pretty sure they thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as well as entertaining us with their dancing too. \u00a0In fact the dance floor was packed with everyone enjoyed themselves, not forgetting the \u2018listeners\u2019.\u00a0 Now to enlighten you of the tunes they chose to play.<\/p>\n

Quite a selection and I wish I could list them all, but that wouldn\u2019t be fair to the band.\u00a0 I had put ticks next to so many numbers, so it\u2019s terribly hard to choose, but my first number to quote is \u2018Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me\u2019<\/em>, sung by Dave (great voice).\u00a0 They were all playing brilliantly and I knew we were in for a fantastic evening.<\/p>\n

It was followed by \u2018Muscrat Ramble\u2019<\/em>, to which I had put four \u2018ticks\u2019 against (in my notes), because wowie! \u00a0They followed on with the wonderful \u2018Chimes Blues\u2019<\/em>, always a favourite and then a superb number that I don\u2019t believe has been played here before, \u2018Big Bear Stomp\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Again they were all marvellous, what a sound, I have to make mention to Pete on drums, it was one of those tunes.\u00a0 We performed our \u2018Charleston\u2019 line-dance to their next number, \u2018Irish Black Bottom\u2019<\/em>, the biggest line-up thus far \u2013 twelve in all, not many for the big clubs, but lots for us!\u00a0 Nick took a turn to sing next \u2013 he also has a great voice and sang \u2018Oh Daddy Blues\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Then came a marvellous favourite of mine, Irvin Berlin\u2019s \u2018When The Midnight Choo Choo Leaves for Alabam\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Such another great dancing number and we took advantage of that \u2013 dance floor full!<\/p>\n

Oh, what a tune next \u2018Annie Street Rock\u2019<\/em>, wow, they were certainly rocking – all of them – talk about ‘swinging’!\u00a0 What with Dave and Mike on trumpets, Brian and \u2018Kid\u2019, they were all magic.\u00a0 But then to add the sparkle of John giving that beautiful deep earthy pom \u00a0pom sound, helping the whole \u2018engine\u2019, driving it all along \u2013 Hugh (between front line and the \u2018engine\u2019), Pete and Nick \u2013 they certainly all \u2018had that thing\u2019 (sorry gushing again).\u00a0 They should have ended the evening there, but it probably would have left them up in the air, so they brought us all down to earth with \u2018Down by the Riverside\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 We all joined in on the dance floor, singing our hearts out.\u00a0 What a way to go, but it didn\u2019t end there.\u00a0 We finished with \u2018Happy Birthday\u2019.\u00a0 It was Peter Abbott\u2019s 50th birthday a couple of days prior, so the band played and we sang it to him.\u00a0 [Peter was a Para-Olympic medallist some years ago – I shall interview him at some time\u00a0and tell you his story.]<\/p>\n
