{"id":3459,"date":"2016-05-22T20:20:54","date_gmt":"2016-05-22T20:20:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=3459"},"modified":"2016-05-26T18:01:17","modified_gmt":"2016-05-26T18:01:17","slug":"mahogany-hall-stompers-20th-may-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=3459","title":{"rendered":"Mahogany Hall Stompers, 20th May 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #f79600;\"><strong>MAHOGANY HALL STOMPERS,<\/strong> <\/span>was\u00a0our band\u00a0who entertain us at <span style=\"color: #00b000;\"><strong>FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent)<\/strong><\/span> on <span style=\"color: #00b000;\"><strong>Friday 20<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup> May 2016<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 Band leader, <span style=\"color: #f79600;\"><strong>BRIAN GILES<\/strong> <\/span>(cornet) had a couple of changes to his band, namely <span style=\"color: #f79600;\"><strong>TONY TEALE<\/strong> <\/span>on reeds and <span style=\"color: #f79600;\"><strong>COLIN GRAHAM<\/strong> <\/span>on trombone.\u00a0 He had his usual \u2018engine boys\u2019 &#8211; <span style=\"color: #00b000;\"><strong>\u2018<span style=\"color: #f79600;\">SOUTHEND BOB\u2019 ALBUTT<\/span><\/strong><\/span> on banjo and vocals, <span style=\"color: #f79600;\"><strong>CHRIS MARCHANT <\/strong><\/span>on drums and<strong> <b><span style=\"color: #f79600;\">ROGER CURPHEY <\/span><\/b><\/strong>and double bass.\u00a0 But we had a lovely extra surprise, because <b><span style=\"color: #f79600;\">TIM HUSKISSON<\/span><\/b>\u00a0couldn&#8217;t play with the band due to a\u00a0previous engagement, but which\u00a0was then\u00a0cancelled and thus being free, kindly offered to join the band on piano, instead of his usual clarinet with them.\u00a0 So we had a seven-piece band, which made for some lovely music by these combined musicians.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3485\" style=\"width: 289px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Mahogany-Hall-20may2016-2360.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3485\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3485\" class=\" wp-image-3485\" src=\"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Mahogany-Hall-20may2016-2360-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"Mahogany Hall Stompers at Farnborough Jazz Club (Kent) on 20th May 2015. Photo by Mike Witt.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first number (aptly chosen) was a\u00a0\u2018Louis\u2019 number<em>, \u2018Mahogany Hall Stomp\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 However, with people turning up, I didn\u2019t have time to write\u00a0any special notes, but I did write all dancers were out on the floor for Bix Beiderbecke\u2019s number, \u2018<em>That Dah Dah Strain\u2019.<\/em>\u00a0 That was followed by <em>\u2018I\u2019ve Gotta Feeling I\u2019m Falling\u2019.\u00a0 <\/em>Tony took to tenor sax and what was special, was Brian playing trumpet in a duet with Roger, on double bass (both brilliant).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3491\" style=\"width: 363px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Mahogany-Hall-20may2016-2357.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3491\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3491\" class=\" wp-image-3491\" src=\"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Mahogany-Hall-20may2016-2357-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Tony Teale plays clarinet for Mahogany Hall Stompers at Farnborough Jazz Club (Kent) on 20th May 2015. Photo by Mike Witt.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another tune to mention is <em>\u2018Pretty Baby\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 We certainly had some pretty music, with some great solos from everyone \u2013 especially Tim on piano and Chris on drums plus\u00a0of course, sung by Bob.\u00a0 The evening had some pretty special people turning up too, one such family being Colin Dobson, his wife Jo and accompanied by son-in-law, Jim. \u00a0So the band played <em>\u2018Somebody Stole My Gal\u2019<\/em> (sung by Bob) especially in recognition of Colin and his days on trumpet in the \u2018Billy Cotton Band Show\u2019.\u00a0 The number was their signature tune \u2013 see &#8216;You Tube: <em>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i-mgZm-E8wo<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0(you can see ten-minutes of one of the shows in 1964).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3499\" style=\"width: 409px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Mahogany-Hall-20may2016-2359.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3499\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3499\" class=\" wp-image-3499\" src=\"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Mahogany-Hall-20may2016-2359-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Mahogany Hall Stompers at Farnborough Jazz Club (Kent) on 20th May 2016. Photo by Mike Witt.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our other special visitors were Penny (daughter of George Web) and Peter (with friends Valerie and Tony from France) and they all enjoyed dancing, lovely to see them.\u00a0\u00a0 I was dancing to the next <em>\u2018Copenhagen\u2019<\/em>, so no little notes, I just enjoyed!\u00a0\u00a0 We also had our visiting dancers, Linda and John, who enjoyed\u00a0(nice to see them as they travel far).\u00a0 Their closing number was a rip-roaring one to end another happy evening (Keith danced again too &#8211; Joyful!) the number &#8211; <em>\u2018When the Midnight Choo Choo Leaves for Alabam\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><em>P.S, comment from Mike Witt:\u00a0 &#8220;This band really gelled.
