MARDI GRAS JAZZBAND<\/span><\/b> were back here at Farnborough Jazz Club<\/strong><\/span> on Friday, 13th<\/span><\/sup> May 2016<\/strong><\/span>. \u00a0<\/strong>The musicians were (leader) ROB PEARCE<\/strong><\/span> on trombone, with LEIGH HENSON<\/strong><\/span> on trumpet &vocals, JOHN ELLMER<\/strong><\/span> on reeds, JOHN STUART<\/strong><\/span> on banjo & guitar, MARC EASENER<\/strong><\/span> on double\u00a0bass &sousaphone\u00a0and PAUL BAKER<\/strong><\/span> on drums.\u00a0 (Hi Joyful \u2013 keep smiling).<\/p>\n

To advertise the evening, I mentioned this band has always excited everyone and certainly lures everyone onto the dance floor.\u00a0 However, a few of our dancers were absent, due to holidays etc., (their mum\u2019s letters were obtained, but they forgot to bring them last week!).\u00a0 Thus, we had less dancers to help with our atmosphere.\u00a0 The band had a hard job playing without that atmosphere, but after a while, they relaxed and by the later part of the evening, we ‘got going’.\u00a0 My first number to mention was not their first, but Rob told us a super bit of information.\u00a0 The tune was \u2018Buddy Bolden\u2019s Blues\u2019<\/em>, fabulously played.\u00a0 The info was about a little known show in New York about Buddy Bolden.\u00a0 He had played trombone in the accompanying orchestra.\u00a0 What a marvellous addition to his C.V.<\/p>\n

We had a few dancers on for \u2018St. Louis Blues\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 I had put three ticks beside this number and again, against the next one too.\u00a0 It was \u2018Blue Moon\u2019<\/em> and Leigh sang it rather beautifully (including me \u2013 probably not so beautifully – at the back of the room, because I love it!).<\/p>\n

During the evenings \u00a0last session, Leigh sang \u2018Doctor Jazz\u2019<\/em>, which had John not only playing clarinet, but also cymbals and bar, great fun.\u00a0 As if three ticks show how good the number was played, I put five against the next one, because they were all absolutely fabulous with \u2018Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans\u2019, <\/em>plus another brilliant voice \u2013 John this time.\u00a0 Then Rob was able to show his talent with \u2018Ory\u2019s Creole Trombone\u2019<\/em>, an excellent performance and (I think) a coda better than Kid Ory\u2019s – ha (up and down the scales spectacularly \u2013 I cannot explain it better than that).\u00a0 I thought he couldn\u2019t get as good as that, but I was wrong.<\/p>\n

Next, Rob and Marc played some brilliant harmonizing between them on trombone and sousaphone as an intro to \u2018Lou-i-Easy-An-I-A\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 A great favourite, sung by John and a real \u2018hot\u2019 number played superbly by the \u2018engine boys\u2019, Marc, Paul and John (S) . \u00a0Then Rob called a friend, Barry Vegas, up to sing.\u00a0 He was lovely, singing some of my favourite numbers, \u2018It Had To Be You\u2019<\/em> and \u2018A Foggy Day In London Town\u2019<\/em>, which blended into \u2018You\u2019re Nobody, Till Somebody Loves You\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Plenty of dancing (including Keith asking me to dance! Yes, I mean it \u2013 he\u2019s getting romantic again – ha).\u00a0 My last number to mention is a \u2018Louis\u2019 one, \u2018The Georgia Grind\u2019<\/em>, so much fun, with Leigh singing and lots of dancing.\u00a0 It\u2019s a shame people are shy to get up a dance, until someone gets up first.\u00a0 We don\u2019t look or judge anyone dancing, we are all different and we are not \u2018Strictly Come Dancing\u2019, it is just fun to dance and gives some exercise perhaps needed too.\u00a0 Thanks Mardi Gras, I hope you enjoyed your gig in the grounds at Westminster Abbey on Monday (16th) playing in a marque – for 500 Canadians, I bet they loved you.\u00a0 See you next month \u2013 24th June.<\/p>\n
