TONY PITT\u2019S ALL STARS<\/strong><\/span> came to entertain us again at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent)<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on FRIDAY, 6<\/strong>th<\/span><\/sup> May 2016<\/strong><\/span> and what entertainment and a half it was!.\u00a0\u00a0 Banjoist TONY<\/strong> <\/span> had his great friends with him, being\u00a0 ALAN GRESTY<\/b><\/span> <\/strong>on trumpet, DAVE HEWITT<\/strong><\/span> on trombone &baritone horn, AL NICHOLS<\/span><\/b> <\/strong>on reeds, ANDY LAWRENCE<\/b><\/span> <\/strong>on double bass and JOHN ELMER<\/strong><\/span> on drums.\u00a0\u00a0 Brilliant evening from brilliant musicians.\u00a0 It was a hot evening, both weather-wise and music-wise.\u00a0 They began\u00a0wearing their lovely white jackets, looking very professional as always, but it was too hot to keep them on.<\/p>\n

My first choice of songs to mention is \u2018Farewell Blues\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 I was busy with people coming in to the club, so took no notes.\u00a0 However, Django Reinhart does a wonderful recording of it on You Tube, so was able to recall them playing it. \u00a0I also recall our dance floor was flooded with everyone dancing to the next tune \u2018When Everyone Thinks You\u2019re Wonderful\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Dave played baritone horn and Al on tenor sax \u2013 fabulous \u2013 a lovely sound.<\/p>\n

Following came \u2018Everybody Loves My Baby\u2019<\/em> and was sung by Alan.\u00a0 We all got up to perform our line-dance.\u00a0 We do have a lot of fun (Charleston style), because we don\u2019t care if we make mistakes, it\u2019s all about loving the music.\u00a0 Well, our next number, again had the floor full of dancers, Alan sang, with Dave (again) on baritone horn and Al on alto sax.\u00a0 That tune was \u2018Curse Of An Aching Heart\u2019<\/em>, I don\u2019t think it has been played recently, if at all at the club – certainly a \u2018hot\u2019 tune.<\/p>\n

Then Tony played a wonderful introduction to \u2018The Sheik of Araby\u2019<\/em> and what a fabulous five minutes of brilliance came from the boys \u2013 fantastic drumming (solo) from John, well fabulous solos from all of them.<\/p>\n

After the break, they began with \u2018Way Down Yonder In New Orleans\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Dave on baritone horn and Al on tenor sax this time.\u00a0 Plus with the next number, Al did a splendid job on tenor again to \u2018Black & Blue\u2019 <\/em>and our dance floor was chock-a-block with dancers.\u00a0 I can couple the last two numbers together, because I had put three ticks against both tunes, I also wrote \u2018fab solos from everyone\u2019, again against both numbers (with tenor on first and alto against the last one).\u00a0 The numbers were \u2018Blue, Turning Grey Over You\u2019<\/em> and Louis Armstrong\u2019s 1938 version of \u2018When The Saints Go Marching In\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 I can remember standing with Keith and we both had our mouths agog, thrilled to bits and loving every minute of it all.\u00a0 Just one thing to add and that is they will be back on Keith\u2019s actual birthday, Friday, 12th August 2016.\u00a0 FAB-U-LOUS.<\/p>\n
