The SUSSEX JAZZ KINGS\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>appeared\u00a0at Farnborough Jazz Club on<\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>29th April 2016<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and some super jazz, along\u00a0with dancing and laughter were in evidence.\u00a0 Leader, DAVE STRADWICK, <\/strong><\/span>trumpet, had booked his regular players, IAIN MCAULAY<\/strong> <\/span>on trombone, BERNARD STUTT<\/strong> <\/span>on clarinet, PHIL DURELL<\/strong> <\/span>on banjo, PETER CLANCY<\/strong> <\/span>on d.bass &sousaphone and PETE LAY<\/strong> <\/span>on drums.\u00a0 I had suggested you get your butts down to \u2018Farnborough Friday\u2019<\/span> <\/strong>and get swinging,\u00a0but forgot it was May Bank Holiday weekend, so many of you obviously had family commitments, although we still had a nice little crowd and another evening was enjoyed.<\/p>\n

\"Front<\/a>

Front liners are Iain MCaulay (trombone), band leader Dave Stradwick (trumpet) and Bernard Stutt (clarinet) and engine are Pete Clancy-hidden (d.bass), Pete Lay (drums) and Phil Durrell (banjo) all playing as Sussex Jazz Kings for all at Farnborough Jazz Club (Kent) on 29th April 2016. They started ‘right in’ with that happy jaunty tune, \u2018Algiers Strut\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Welcome back boys.\u00a0 They followed on with a super Duke Ellington number, \u2018Saratoga Swing\u2019<\/em>, with some wonderful solos played by everyone.\u00a0 Dave remarked we had cheated doing our line-dance to the next one.\u00a0 He had already stated that\u00a0as we are getting older (what?), he doubted we would be able to dance to it \u2013 or if even the band could play it, but we all coped well (band too, ha) with \u2018Isle of Capri\u2019,<\/em> made famous by Ken Colyer.\u00a0 I have to say, us line-dancers were breathing fast on returning to our seats (who said that!!!!!!)\u00a0 Now I have another beautiful voice to mention, this being Iain\u2019s.\u00a0 He sang one of Fats Waller\u2019s numbers, \u2018Everybody Loves My Baby\u2019 <\/em>and what a super job he made of it.<\/p>\n

My next mention is of Pete\u2019s feature on Sousaphone.\u00a0 What a lovely instrument and he played it splendidly to \u2018Big Butter and Egg Man\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Although a lovely one to dance to, we held back and listened instead.\u00a0 \u00a0The next tune was such a romantic one, \u2018The Miller\u2019s Daughter, Marianne\u2019<\/em>, sung by Iain so beautifully too.\u00a0 <\/em>(Just a little bit of extra info, this song must surely have been written for the daughter of Sir Thomas Miller, 6th Baronet of Froyle, Hampshire, although she died in 1910 and the song was written much later in 1936.\u00a0 If I am right, I\u2019m sure she must have been involved with the composers and left a lasting impression on them in some way, anybody know?\u00a0 It is a shame our own Marianne was not at the club (bank holiday commitments), but I will tell her\u00a0about the number!<\/p>\n

Bernard was featured next with a special tune \u2018If we never meet again\u2019<\/em>, such a lovely tune and sung by Pete (C), who also has another great jazz voice.\u00a0 The tune was made famous by Elvis.\u00a0 Oh yes Dave, what a great feature came next and it was yours (Iain said you had decided to play it especially for Farnborough!)\u00a0 Well Dave, I think you played it even faster than Humphrey \u2013 loved him and loved you! \u00a0The number?\u00a0 \u2018Bad Penny Blues\u2019 <\/em>of course, superbly backed by your own engine boys, Pete (C), Pete (L) and Phil, fantastic.<\/p>\n

It was Phil\u2019s turn to be featured and he played \u2018Mabel\u2019s Dreams\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks Phil, you did it a treat.\u00a0 (I have to confess, I know\u00a0a huge amount of\u00a0\u00a0tunes, but I’m sure like many of you, I don’t\u00a0know\u00a0too many\u00a0titles!\u00a0 Thanks to Mick Collins, who\u00a0sits near to me, I am able to double check with him of a name!)\u00a0 Finally, Dave made a special mention to his lovely wife, Lesley.\u00a0 He said she works extremely hard sorting gigs for them etc., and he dedicated their\u00a0last number to her (renaming it accordingly), \u2018My Wild Reigate Rose\u2019<\/em> \u2013 nice this photo captured her too.\u00a0 Well done Lesley \u2013 where would men be without their ladies?\u00a0 Once again, thanks to the ‘Kings’, it was nice to have you back at Farnborough.<\/p>\n
