We had so much fun with \u2018LAURIE CHESCOE\u2019S REUNION BAND\u2019<\/strong><\/span> here at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB, Kent<\/strong><\/span> on Friday,<\/b><\/span> 22<\/b>nd<\/b><\/span><\/sup> April 2016<\/b><\/span>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Drummer and leader, Laurie<\/strong><\/span>, was joined by ALLAN (\u2018Lord Arsenal\u2019) BRADLEY<\/strong><\/span> on trumpet & vocals, JOHN LEE<\/strong><\/span> on reeds, MIKE POINTON<\/span><\/b> <\/strong>on trombone, COLIN BRAY <\/span><\/b>on piano, sax & xylophone, JIM DOUGLAS<\/span><\/b> <\/strong>on banjo & guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON<\/strong><\/span> on bass guitar & bass ukulele.<\/p>\n

\"John<\/a>

I wished I could really write well enough to conjure up the true picture of how wonderful an evening these fabulous musicians give – such super entertainment.\u00a0 However, I will try.\u00a0 Their first number was a Frank Sinatra hit, called \u2018Sunday\u2019<\/em> and of course Allan sung it wonderfully.\u00a0 Their next number had everyone up dancing with \u2018S\u2019 Wonderful\u2019<\/em> (written by the Gershwin brothers\u2019).\u00a0 They followed on with such a super one, being \u2018Fidgety Feet\u2019<\/em> (John played clarinet).<\/p>\n

Allen has such a marvellous voice, he and\u00a0Mike on trombone\u00a0showed the business with \u2018Them Their Eyes\u2019<\/em>, to which we showed our appreciation by dancing our line-dance. He also sang one of his favourite numbers, \u2018Oh Marie\u2019<\/em>, with the band echoing behind him.\u00a0 Everyone entered the floor to dance away to \u2018Old Rockin\u2019 Chair\u2019s Got Me\u2019<\/em>, which again Allan sang, with Mike joining him – just love Hoagy Carmichael\u2019s stuff.<\/p>\n

Their next number was to have Allan and Colin swop places, Allan on piano and Colin up front on soprano sax, plus John on tenor sax.\u00a0 Wonderful stuff to \u2018Slow Boat To China\u2019.<\/em>\u00a0 John featured next \u2013 again playing tenor and with the backing of Jim, to \u2018Swing 42\u2019<\/em>, oh he is brilliant on tenor (he used to play in Keith\u2019s \u2018KGB\u2019 [Keith Grant Band]).<\/p>\n

Next was Colin\u2019s speciality \u2013 up he comes with his ironing board!!!! (Allan taking to the piano again) and they begin to play \u2018I Can\u2019t Give You Anything But Love\u2019<\/em>, what\u2019s special, you ask?\u00a0 Colin proceeds to play xylophone \u2013 with such magic too.\u00a0 I personally think Colin is a genius.<\/p>\n

Jim and Peter then played their special duet to \u2018My Man\u2019<\/em>, quite super, holding everyone\u2019s attention.\u00a0 They played more tunes, but I made no more notes, as I was dancing (and drinking hmmm).<\/p>\n

On closing, I have to mention Laurie, who is a wonderful drummer.\u00a0 As you will see from these photos, how right I was, what a fabulous ol\u2019 smiler he is, reminiscent of Gene Krupa (and Keith too aye).\u00a0 Don\u2019t you just love a smiler?\u00a0 Thanks boys, another fantastic evening.<\/p>\n
