\u2018LAURIE CHESCOE\u2019S REUNION BAND\u2019<\/strong><\/span> were here at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB, Kent<\/strong> <\/span>on 4th<\/sup> September 2015<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/strong>Drummer and leader (smiling from ear to ear) Laurie<\/strong>,<\/span> was joined by ALLAN (\u2018Lord Arsenal\u2019) BRADLEY<\/strong><\/span> on trumpet & vocals, JOHN<\/span> LEE<\/strong> <\/span>on reeds, MIKE POINTON<\/strong> <\/span>on trombone, COLIN BRAY <\/strong><\/span>on piano, JIM DOUGLAS<\/strong> <\/span>on banjo & guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON<\/strong> <\/span>on bass guitar & bass ukulele. These guys are all top of the range musicians and play brilliantly together.<\/p>\n

They began with \u2018When Somebody Thinks You\u2019re Wonderful\u2019<\/em>, which was sang with plenty of feeling by Mike.\u00a0 He also sang the next number, \u2018Ja-Dah\u2019<\/em> and although I didn\u2019t make a note of it, I\u2019m sure Pete would have played his bass ukulele.\u00a0 Then Mike was \u2018featured\u2019 with the next one \u2018Gee Baby Aint I Good To You\u2019<\/em>, just a brilliant trombonist and, of course, singer.\u00a0 The dance floor took a bashing for the next <\/span>one, with everybody up dancing.\u00a0 The number was \u2018All Of Me\u2019<\/em> (good job we are on the ground floor!).<\/p>\n

It was Colin\u2019s turn to be featured next. \u00a0He began with one of his funny stories \u2013 this about waiters \u2013 oh, he is so straight-faced and dry-humoured.\u00a0 When he tells one of\u00a0his stories, you\u2019ll find yourself crying with laughter.\u00a0 The song he played was \u2018When You\u2019re Smiling\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Such a lovely pianist and as you know, he is very talented at playing many other instruments too.<\/p>\n

John took to the stage next, with his \u2018feature\u2019 and played Al Jolson\u2019s \u2018Avalon\u2019<\/em>. [tit-bit: Jolson was born in Lithuania, Russian Empire] John is just one great saxophonist and clarinetist\u00a0\u2013 say no more!!!!! Keith and I just love him.\u00a0 Jim came next with his \u2018feature\u2019 with a beautiful song – \u2018Embraceable You\u2019.\u00a0 Of course, Jim is a master of the guitar.\u00a0 Next came along a \u2018Slow Boat To China\u2019<\/em> with great singing from \u2018Lord Arsenal\u2019 (great trumpeter too) and<\/strong> he is brilliant fronting and announcing all their programmes.<\/p>\n

The next\u00a0tune is a fun\u00a0one and the dance floor took a beating again with \u2018Snake Rag\u2019.\u00a0 Throughout the evening, Laurie played fabulous drums with his wonderful face full of smiles, well he loves what he does \u2026.. And what a band he put together\u00a0to do it with.\u00a0 Louis Armstrong\u2019s \u2018Strutting With Some Barbeque\u2019<\/em> (written by wife Lilian) is such a great tune to end an evening with and they all played it with such gusto. \u00a0I for one, went home exhilarated.\u00a0 Thanks boys, for learning to play when you were little.<\/p>\n
