MARTYN BROTHER<\/strong><\/span> (singular) played here at FARNBOROUGH\u00a0JAZZ CLUB<\/strong><\/span> on Friday, 15th April 2016<\/strong><\/span>. \u00a0Brother, Emile<\/span><\/strong> is back in New Orleans visiting their Dad (Barry Martyn<\/strong><\/span>) again. BEN<\/strong><\/span>, <\/strong>who plays double bass and sings, had booked for us FINLAY MILNE<\/b><\/span> on trumpet\u00a0(new to the club, I think), GEORGE SIMMONDS<\/strong> <\/span> on trombone,\u00a0 IAN BEETLESTONE<\/strong><\/span> on piano, JOHN \u2018flashback radio\u2019 RUSCOE<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on guitar and DOMINIQUE COLES<\/span><\/b><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on drums.\u00a0 I told you with this young band, you can expect some exciting and energetic jazz, how right I was.\u00a0 They play plenty of wonderful New Orleans jazz, after all, these brothers lived there, were brought up on it, but Ben, I\u2019m so cross with you, because you have given me a hell of a job, trying to decide what numbers to mention and what to leave out as they were all good.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018Help Me Make It Through The Night<\/em>\u2019 is a beautiful song of Kris Kristofferson\u2019s, sung by Ben and although not exactly jazz, was so good, it was definitely worth a mention, one to be entertained with.\u00a0 Ben certainly has one hell of a voice and everyone loved it.\u00a0 My next one is \u2018Summertime\u2019<\/em> (from Porgy & Bess), played with a difference.\u00a0 They gave it a cha-cha-ch\u00e1 tempo.\u00a0 Steve and I made an attempt to dance it.\u00a0 We both knew how to, though a bit rusty, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.\u00a0 The next one to follow, they have played before, but this time, sung by Finlay (another great jazzy voice), namely \u2018Shake That Thing\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Of course they again as before, enticed everyone onto the dance floor.<\/p>\n

The following number, joined by George, was a feature of Ian\u2019s on piano.\u00a0 Such a lovely number, played and sung with such sensitivity, the tune \u2018Miss Otis Regrets\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 I have always loved Ella\u2019s rendition.\u00a0 Fabulous Ian.\u00a0 Their next choice was sung by George, \u2018The Sheik From Araby\u2019<\/em> a Preservation Hall Jazz Band number.\u00a0 It was the one we did our line-dance to. Not quite like the original dancers \u2013 ha.\u00a0 Another \u2018must\u2019 to include is \u2018St. Louis Blues\u2019<\/em>, certainly a Louis Armstrong favourite and again sung by Finlay, in the same style \u2013 just brilliant.\u00a0 Oh, also Finlay is just one super trumpeter \u2013 I wrote it by practically every number!!!!!<\/p>\n

A friend of the band, Norman Grodentz (clarinet) joined them for a couple of numbers, one of them being \u2018Isle of Capri\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 This one has been recorded by so many stars in the past, one such, being Kenny Ball and his Jazz Band.\u00a0 Ben\u2019s Band were marvellous.\u00a0 Finlay sang again, the tune was \u2018Wont You Come Home Bill Bailey\u2019<\/em>, yep, another fantastic number (terrific\u00a0guitar John) \u2013 great jazz.<\/p>\n

The next number, backed by Ian on piano, was a feature for George.\u00a0 Such an amazing young man \u2013 only 25yrs old, but showing a maturity beyond his years.\u00a0 He sang \u2018I Got It Bad and That Aint Good\u2019<\/em>, with such feeling.\u00a0 I do hope it wasn\u2019t from personal experience and only talent.\u00a0 Such feeling in his trombone playing too, well done George, you are a star.\u00a0 You should record this one Ben, this one and Ian\u2019s too.\u00a0 They wound the evening up with \u2018I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream\u2019<\/em>, giving their all, each one performing solos superbly (great drums Dom) and just the right number to finish on leaving, everyone feeling happy.<\/p>\n

Sorry some of you regulars missed it.\u00a0 Laurie is back next week, so pleasedon\u2019t miss that one.<\/p>\n
