MIKE BARRY\u2019S UPTOWN GANG <\/strong><\/span>played\u00a0on Friday, 8th<\/span><\/sup> April 2016<\/strong><\/span> here at the Farnborough Jazz Club (<\/strong>Kent)<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 MIKE BARRY<\/span><\/b> (leader, trumpeter & vocals) had his usual band with him, namely GOFF DUBBER<\/span><\/b> on reeds, \u2018WHISPERING\u2019 MIKE HOLT<\/strong><\/span> on trombone & vocals, JOHN STUART<\/strong><\/span> on banjo & guitar, ROGER CURPHY<\/strong><\/span> on double bass and GRAHAM COLLICOTT<\/span><\/b> on drums.\u00a0 The week prior, I advertised the evening by saying Mike is a wonderful band leader and this bunch of guys together will be for great entertainment, of that you can be sure. \u00a0They didn\u2019t let me down.\u00a0 I also said \u2018Whispering Mike\u2019 is such a funny guy, so him just on his own, would give you a warm happy glow inside you on leaving the club.\u00a0\u00a0 I added that together they would have you in peals of laughter throughout the evening, plus you would certainly love the music they produced!\u00a0 Again, I wasn\u2019t wrong.\u00a0 Almost a full house can verify this (nice to see Mary and Bob back from Australia \u2013 with Beverley, a pretty young Japanese friend with them).<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s repertoire started with a couple of fast numbers and then, my first number to mention (sung by Mike, with Goff on alto sax) is \u2018Beale Street Mama\u2019<\/em>, \u2018Louis Armstrong\u2019s version and just such a cool number.<\/p>\n

They all showed off their \u2018stuff\u2019 with my next choice \u2018Kid\u2019 Ory\u2019s \u2018Creole Song\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Fabulous solos from everyone, showing that the \u2018engine\u2019 doesn\u2019t just drive a band, but can hold their own, when playing solo \u2013 luverly!\u00a0 We chose to dance our \u2018Charlton style\u2019<\/em> line-dance to Bix Beiderbecke’s \u2018Oh Baby\u2019<\/em>, obviously, I was too busy to make notes –\u00a0certainly fun for us dancing \u2013 ha.<\/p>\n

I loved Goff singing next (in true \u2018Louis Armstrong\u2019 style) to \u2018Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans\u2019.<\/em>\u00a0 They played it beautifully and brought everyone onto the dance floor (such a romantic lot).\u00a0 Next they played a wonderful rendition of \u2018Everybody Loves Friday Night<\/strong>\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Oh what a certainly fun for us dancing \u2013 ha.\u00a0 \u00a0Oh what a marvelous bit of fun and with everyone in the audience joining in singing at the top of their voices.\u00a0 Yes, really, oh, what was that?\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019re right, it was actually \u2018Everybody Loves Saturday Night\u2019<\/em> – ha.\u00a0 Then came a brilliant swinging number \u2018Clarinet Marmalade\u2019<\/em>, fabulous.<\/p>\n

\u2018Whispering Mike\u2019 had everyone in fits of laughter with his party piece, singing to \u2018March Dominique\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 He sings it in pigeon French (complete with beret).\u00a0 Oh he is wonderful.\u00a0 I had a hard time finding who wrote this tune, only finding \u2018Dominique\u2019-<\/em> Jeannine Deckers\u2019 (\u2018Sister Smile\u2019 or \u2018The Singing Nun\u2019) tune, not believing it could be this tune, being a Nun.\u00a0 But if I had listened to it on You Tube, I would have realised it was the same tune.\u00a0 However, Mike shows his wonderful talent, because he added a New Orleans \u2018marching\u2019 touch to it and hence a fantastic result.\u00a0 His talent didn\u2019t end there, because the following tune was<\/strong> his own composition.\u00a0 He took the idea from pianists, during the Great Depression of 1929, who (unable to get band work) took individual jobs and to jazz things up, \u2018Boogie\u2019 was invented.\u00a0 Mike wrote this tune and called it \u2018Bluin\u2019 the Eighths\u2019<\/em> (musicians will understand how and what that means).\u00a0 I absolutely loved the result and strongly believe Mike should record it \u2013 it was super.<\/p>\n

Before I mention my last number, I want to point out how most musicians suffer aches and pains in silence, playing their hearts out.\u00a0 One such person is\u00a0 John Stewart (capture here\u00a0by Mike Witt)\u00a0 was suffering with severe back pain, but this photo doesn’t show a note of this (the only notes he showed were musical ones!).\u00a0 Well done John.\u00a0 Plus cannot leave out this photo of our loveable Roger.<\/p>\n

They finished up in style with \u2018Bourbon Street Parade\u2019<\/em> a splendid way to go home \u2013 wow!\u00a0 I need say no more\u00a0 …\u2026. just brilliant!<\/p>\n
