BOB DWYER\u2019S BIX & PIECES<\/strong><\/span> were back here at our FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB <\/span><\/b> on Friday, 18th March 2016<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0 Leader and trombonist BOB DWYER<\/b><\/span>,<\/strong> chose to have join him, BERNIE HOLDEN<\/strong><\/span> on clarinet & alto sax, HUGH CROZIER <\/strong><\/span>on piano & vocals, JOHN BAYNE<\/strong><\/span> on double bass & bass sax and DAVE PRICE <\/strong><\/span>on banjo & guitar, TONY O\u2019SULLIVAN<\/strong><\/span> was on trumpet and CHRIS WELCH<\/strong><\/span> was on drums.\u00a0 Both Tony and Chris had played at the club before (Tony some ten years back with the Delta Jazz Band).<\/p>\n

Here are a few notes about the music.\u00a0 My first mention is of \u2018Barefoot Boy\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 It was sung by Bob and had a wonderful easy-going tempo for everyone to dance to and, I\u2019m sure, to play too, because they all gave some lovely solos.<\/p>\n

Hugh played a beautiful intro and then sang the next one, \u20182:19 Blues\u2019<\/em> (also known as \u2018Mamie\u2019s Blues\u2019<\/em>).\u00a0 Hugh very rarely chooses the same number, but I understand this is a favourite of his.\u00a0 [He also tells me that although it is credited to Jelly Roll Morton, Jelly Roll himself is said to have told it was composed by Mamie Desdumes, who was a prostitute friend of his godmother – ahem].<\/strong>\u00a0 Onwards \u2026 \u2018Fidgety Feet\u2019<\/em> was the number we chose for our line-dance \u2013 wow, we are gluttons for punishment, well it is a great number \u2013 but fast aye – there were some fabulous solos played by everyone.\u00a0 Hugh sang the next, \u2018Thou Swell\u2019, again some brilliant playing by everyone, with John on bass sax and Bernie on alto sax.\u00a0 \u2018June Night\u2019 <\/em>was then sung by Bob.\u00a0 A number I certainly remember from the 50\u2019s (obviously from Tommy Dorsey\u2019s recording), but I don\u2019t recall this one having been played at the club before.\u00a0 It is certainly a lovely number.<\/p>\n

We had some new people, who hadn\u2019t heard John play his special, so again I requested him play \u2018Elephant Stomp\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2018m sure no-one finds it boring, just about everyone loves it. \u00a0I always hear people say they are amazed how John can have the lungs to cope \u2013 he\u2019s not much more than 5\u2019 5\u2019 and not 18 anymore either!\u00a0 You are brilliant John.\u00a0 Next came \u2018Royal Garden Blues\u2019<\/em> (a Fox Trot), quite a favourite with traditional jazz lovers, as is the following number and oh, another lovely singer too! Tony that is.\u00a0 He sang \u2018Tishomingo Blues\u2019.\u00a0 <\/em>Bob again sang \u2018Nice To Know You Care\u2019 for Keith and me and it had the dance floor full – romantic yes?\u00a0 Tony and Chris played marvellously too, wonderful considering they hadn\u2019t played it before.\u00a0 Their finishing number was \u2018Panama Rag\u2019<\/em> (Bernie on alto) what a number to go out on \u2013 such an exciting one.\u00a0 Again thanks for a lovely evening.<\/p>\n
