{"id":3002,"date":"2015-03-15T18:44:13","date_gmt":"2015-03-15T18:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=3002"},"modified":"2016-03-27T13:17:02","modified_gmt":"2016-03-27T13:17:02","slug":"3002","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=3002","title":{"rendered":"Mahogany Hall Stompers, 13th March 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MAHOGANY HALL STOMPERS<\/strong> entertained us here at <strong>FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong> on <strong>Friday, 13<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup> March 2015<\/strong> and\u00a0everyone showed\u00a0they really enjoyed the music and banter that was created by band leader <strong>BRIAN GILES<\/strong> (cornet) and the boys. Brian had booked <strong>TIM HUSKISSON<\/strong> on reeds, <strong>REX O\u2019DELL<\/strong> on trombone &amp; vocals, <strong>\u2018SOUTHEND BOB\u2019 ALLBUT<\/strong> on banjo &amp; vocals, <strong>CHRIS MARCHANT <\/strong>on drums and <strong>EDDY JOHNSON<\/strong> on double bass. I asked for\u00a0everyone to come with dance shoes to the fore, for a wonderful evening of happy jazz. Well you judge for yourselves &#8211; cos yes, we had fun. For a start, Brian (with his lovely Yorkshire sense of humour and accent, not forgetting his cornet playing) is always a joy and manages to bring a great choice of tunes to play. Photo by Mike Witt.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019ve got to mention <em>\u2018One Sweet Letter From You&#8217;<\/em>, because I jotted down \u2018great clarinet playing from Tim\u2019, well he is terrific. My next jotting was Rex singing <em>\u2018Everywhere You Go\u2019<\/em>. Rex is another talent we are lucky to enjoy at Farnborough \u2013 am I gushing? Sorry! Well, I can still gush some more, because the next song <em>\u2018Just Squeeze Me\u2019<\/em>, brought on the dancers &#8211; in fact the dance floor was packed.\u00a0 That\u2019s just what I like to see. Rex sang the next number too, <em>\u2018You Always Hurt the One You Love\u2019<\/em> (I\u2019m sure he never has \u2013 he\u2019s too nice \u2013 ha). Then we came to the dance floor to enjoy our line-dance to <em>\u2018Moose March\u2019<\/em>, really fabulous. Next came everyone\u2019s favourite by Bob, <em>\u2018I Wanna Be A Dog\u2019<\/em>. Photo by Mike Witt.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rex followed on with singing a mixture of <em>\u2018The Charleston<\/em>\u2019 tunes and we loved performing our line dance again to this. Well, it is a great tune for the dance. More and more people are joining in \u2013 it\u2019s a little bit of fun, nothing fancy and nothing intricate, just beaming faces from the dancers. I put two big stars against the next song <em>\u2018I\u2019ve Got Them Too Good To Be True Blues\u2019<\/em>, because there were some brilliant solos from everyone. It was strange they played the next number <em>\u2018When the Midnight Choo-Choo Leaves for Alabam\u2019, <\/em>because it was played by last week\u2019s band and I hadn\u2019t written their newsletter, till after this evening. It is always weird like that, just how tunes do follow on by chance, when you think how many millions of popular jazz tunes there are to choose from. But then that is what is wonderful about composers \u2013 to think they can still come up with something \u2018new\u2019. So please come back for more, won\u2019t you?
