PHOENIX DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND <\/span><\/b>gave us a terrific time here at Farnborough Jazz Club<\/strong><\/span> on Friday 11th<\/span><\/sup> March 2016<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"Paul<\/a>

They\u2019re a wonderful 7-pce band who certainly know how to enjoy themselves and so always ensures we do too – a brilliant evening.\u00a0 We had the usual musicians,\u00a0 PAUL HIGGS<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0on trumpet, CHARLES SHERWOOD<\/strong><\/span> on clarinet, BILL TODD<\/strong><\/span> on trombone, ALAN CLARKE<\/b><\/span> on drums, DAVE BARNES<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0on piano, ROGER CURPHEY<\/strong><\/span> on double bass and JOHN <\/strong>STUART<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on banjo & guitar. \u00a0Robin and Pauline were in the audience and I know he was really proud of his band.<\/p>\n

Their repertoire had such numbers as \u2018Pennies From Heaven\u2019 <\/em>sung by Dave.\u00a0 [This Bing Crosbie number has an historic \u2018first\u2019, being recorded twice<\/u><\/strong> by Frank Sinatra and has been recorded by dozens of top stars since 1936, until present day!]\u00a0 Paul gave a fabulous rendition of \u2018Cornet Chop Suet\u2019<\/em> \u2013 great finger-tapping from Dave on piano too.\u00a0 Of course the same happened with \u2018Big Butter and Egg Man\u2019<\/em> – everyone excelled.<\/p>\n

Then John played a super guitar solo in ‘You Took Advantage of Me\u2019<\/em>, a lovely Rosemary Clooney number.\u00a0 And what about \u2018South Rampart Street Parade\u2019<\/em>, brilliant \u2013 we (nine of us \u2013 not bad considering several of our usual people were away at jazz festivals) got up for a line-dance.\u00a0 Quite a fast number for us, especially with\u00a0Alan’s drum solo, and the number lasted a long time too! Phew.<\/p>\n

Now the next number had a wonderful intro from Paul and Dave to one of the most beautiful of songs \u2019Stardust\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Charles played a lovely bit of sax, as did Bill on trombone and John on guitar.\u00a0\u00a0I love the calypso,\u00a0played next\u00a0\u2018On a Coconut Island\u2019, <\/em>it’s a<\/em>\u00a0lovely one to dance to.\u00a0 They also played John Williams\u2019 \u2018Cantina Band\u2019,<\/em> played last time they were here and I requested they play it again.\u00a0 Last time it had a Charleston thread, this time with a \u2018Black Bottom\u2019 thread (if I know what I mean \u2013 ha).<\/p>\n

My last number to mention was played by the \u2018engine\u2019 only, very impressive and that was \u2018Please Don\u2019t Talk About Me When I\u2019m Gone\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 There were many great numbers and this all made up for a marvellous evening.\u00a0 I told you they could follow on from the fantastic evening produced the week before \u2013 thanks boys for another exciting evening of \u2018Live\u2019 jazz.<\/p>\n
