I said we had some great news for you, in the shape of internationally famous star, JONNY BOSTON<\/span><\/strong>, award-winning saxophonist, clarinettist & vocalist extraordinaire and I wasn\u2019t exaggerating.\u00a0 Jonny, who now lives in Amsterdam,\u00a0had planned\u00a0a tour here in England for March 2016 and we were lucky to be included.\u00a0 The date was Friday, 4th March 2016<\/span><\/strong>, playing here\u00a0at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 He arranged to have GARY WOOD <\/span><\/strong>on trumpet&vocals, DAVE HEWITT<\/strong> <\/span>on trombone, TIM HUSKISSON<\/span> <\/strong>on piano), TREFOR ‘FINGERS’ WILLIAMS<\/span> <\/strong>on double bass and JOHN PETTERS<\/span> <\/strong>on drums\u00a0\u2013 what a line-up aye?\u00a0 Although John Petters was not able to play due to illness, we had the brilliant MARTIN GUY <\/span><\/strong>to play drums for us. (Sylvie Hewitt filmed some numbers, which we hope to show here at a later date.)<\/p>\n

We first met Jonny years ago, when he played with Phil Mason\u2019s New Orleans All Stars. \u00a0They played for us at Badger\u2019s Mount Hotel and then here at Farnborough (when the club house was razed to the ground). Phil discovered Jonny whilst he was busking in London\u2019s underground. \u00a0Since then, Jonny has played with so many greats, such as Max Collie, John Dankworth, Georgie Fame, Jamie Cullum and Eddie Izzard.\u00a0\u00a0 See video below\u00a0as a guest with The Pasadena Roof Orchestra.\u00a0 He was also with The Philharmonic Orchestra, Barry Martyn & the Young Bloods, TJ Johnson\u2019s Bourbon Kick and oh so many others.\u00a0 Awarded Yorkshire\u2019s TV Young Player of the Year, Chris Barber, who was a judge, invited Jonny & his \u2018Boston Tea Party Band\u2019 to play with his own \u2018Jazz & Blues Band\u2019?\u00a0 As for 4th<\/sup> March, It WAS<\/strong>, as I predicted, a humdinger (sorry I seem to love that expression) of an evening \u2013 a show and a half, to say the least.\u00a0 Each and every one of these musicians are brilliant in their own right and together, they were nothing short of dynamic. \u00a0\u00a0Here, I could swear, because I cannot decide what tunes NOT TO INCLUDE!!\u00a0 They were all wonderful.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had some pretty amazing evenings over the years, but this evening was certainly amongst one of the best.\u00a0 They started off with a hot rendering of \u2018JellyRoll\u2019 Morton\u2019s jazz composition, \u2018Wolverine Blues\u2019<\/em> which set the tone of a great evening of Dixieland jazz. \u00a0(\u2018JellyRoll\u2019 is\u00a0said to have published the very first jazz composition). Their next number \u2018Higher Ground\u2019<\/em> was sung by Jonny.\u00a0 By the way, he has a marvelous voice and has published a beautiful gospel CD, well worth a listen (although this one is not included, he plays the tunes with great jazz hand-clapping warmth \u2013 see below for details).<\/p>\n

Jonny played clarinet beautifully to \u2018At the Jazz Band Ball\u2019,<\/em> (Kenny Ball & Ted Heath both recorded) which enticed our visiting dancers (Jane and Alan) onto the floor.\u00a0 Alan said to me midway through the evening, that he had read my write-up and thought I was probably exaggerating, but said I definitely wasn\u2019t \u2013 ha).\u00a0 \u2018Stairway to the Stars\u2019<\/em> was probably my most favourite number of the evening (if I really had to choose).\u00a0 Tim played a beautiful intro and Jonny sung it with such feeling.\u00a0 I had remarked in my notes \u2018gorgeous\u2019, with \u2018lovely trumpet\u2019 and \u2018fab sax\u2019.<\/p>\n

Next, a ‘King’ Oliver number (recorded by Louis Armstrong), \u00a0\u2018Dippermouth Blues\u2019<\/em>, with Gary singing this time.\u00a0 He used a muted trumpet, oh and of course, we (the audience) did \u2018our bit with calling out in the right place \u201cOh play that thing\u201d.\u00a0 We had a go at our line dance (not too many of us this week, but still lots of fun for us) to \u2018Panama\u2019<\/em>. Although we should have done so to \u2018Dancing Cheek to Cheek\u2019,<\/em> sung by Jonny. ‘It Don\u2019t Mean a Thing If It Aint Got That Swing\u2019<\/i> was sung by Gary, with some fabulous drumming from Martin.<\/p>\n

Following on, Jonny sung \u2018Deep River\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 It was a\u00a0tune sung in many films, including \u2018Show Boat\u2019. \u00a0Trefor \u2018Fingers\u2019 excelled on double bass, with some lovely trumpet sounds from Gary too.\u00a0 I\u2019m still fighting choosing what not<\/strong> to write about, but must mention Dave’s\u00a0fabulous trombone tones with \u00a0\u2018T’Aint What You Do, It\u2019s the Way that You Do It\u2019<\/em> and then \u2018Sweet Georgia Brown\u2019<\/em> with Jonny on clarinet.<\/p>\n

Their last tune that sent us all off into the night with a warm glow, was a genuine foot-stomping, hand clapping gospel tune made famous by \u2018Acker\u2019 Bilk,<\/em> \u2018Let The Light (from the Lighthouse) Shine on Me\u2019.<\/em>\u00a0 Hopefully this evening will all be repeated again soon!\u00a0 Sorry guys to have told about almost your whole evening \u2013 I still left off some brilliant numbers, but I haven\u2019t spoilt the rest of your tour as we were your last gig.\u00a0 Oh and by the way Jonny, I think Phil must be bursting with pride with his prot\u00e9g\u00e9 from way up high.<\/p>\n
