We had the \u00a0‘LORD<\/span> NAPIER HOT SHOTS’<\/strong><\/span> on Friday 26th February 2016<\/strong><\/span>, here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span> Let me remind you, they have been playing at the Lord Napier Pub in Thornton Heath for many, many years now, which shows how well loved they are. \u00a0I mentioned last time, this pub has been one of London’s most favourite jazz venues since the early 1960’s.\u00a0\u00a0Leader,\u00a0MIKE JACKSON<\/strong> (<\/span><\/span>trumpet), had booked\u00a0MIKE DUCKWORTH <\/strong><\/span>(trombone), PAT GLOVER<\/strong> (<\/span><\/span>reeds & vocals), LYNN SAUNDERS<\/strong> <\/span>(banjo & vocals), MICK SCRIVEN<\/strong> <\/span>(double bass,\u00a0 bass sax & vocals) and\u00a0BILL TRAXLER<\/strong> (<\/span><\/span>drums).<\/p>\n

Once again, you all asked for us to get them back as they play such lovely happy trad jazz and their first number didn\u2019t disappoint anyone, being \u2018Down In Honky Tonk Town\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Mike (J) sang it for us (rather nicely, as well as super trumpet) and Mike (D) blowing a great \u2018bone too.\u00a0 My next mention is \u2018Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me\u2019<\/em>, with Pat giving us a turn with his vocals and can he sing this fast.\u00a0 Keith and I go back a long way with Pat and have always loved his vocals, playing (and whistling, when he could do it).\u00a0 Our turn for a line-dance comes next on my list, that being to the \u2018Charleston\u2019 <\/em>\u2013 not too many of us, but doesn\u2019t matter, because their playing was \u2018fab\u2019.\u00a0 Great drumming Bill.<\/p>\n

Here is the front line of the Lord Napier’s Hotshots, seen playing at Farnborough Jazz Club (Kent on Friday, 26th February 2016. Now you all know I just love a bass sax (which\u00a0a long time ago,\u00a0I nicknamed \u2018Big Bertha\u2019).\u00a0 Well my next choice of number, I noted Mick chose to play his bass sax to, which was \u2018At Sundown\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 What a wonderful Artie Shaw number and how fantastically played by everyone.\u00a0 Mick stayed on \u2018Big Bertha\u2019 with their following tune, being Bix Beiderbecke\u2019s famed number, \u2018Royal Garden Blues\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Yes, here I had given those three \u2018ticks\u2019 in my notes. \u00a0Then I have to make mention to \u2018Mama Inez\u2019<\/em>, a rhumba, although Steve and I probably performed a mambo – oh well!\u00a0 I just love the Cuban and Latin American dances.<\/p>\n

The next number was a feature of Lynn\u2019s and that was \u2018When The Midnight Choo Choo Leaves For Alabam\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Of course he sang it as well as playing banjo and does he excel in both.\u00a0 Keith and I go back a long way with Lynn too, so I just love him.\u00a0 I must include the next tune, \u2018Dream A Little Dream Of Me\u2019<\/em>, because Mike (J) played a lovely trumpet.\u00a0 This song is such a beautiful song and if you go \u2018on line\u2019, you will find a recording of it by Doris Day, looking and singing possibly at her very best.\u00a0 Mick sang their last number, \u2018Porter\u2019s Love Song to a Chamber Maid\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Gosh another marvellous singer, aye!\u00a0 Such a lovely evening.\u00a0 Hope you all enjoyed it and hopefully we\u2019ll see you next week.<\/p>\n
