The <\/span>MARDI GRAS JAZZBAND<\/b><\/span> did spread a little happiness at\u00a0FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>on Friday, 19th<\/span><\/sup> February 2016<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 In fact, they spread a lot!\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Leader\/trombonist, ROB PEARCE<\/strong><\/span> was joined by LEIGH HENSON<\/strong><\/span> on trumpet &vocals, JOHN ELLMER\u00a0<\/strong><\/span> on reeds, TIM HUSKISSON<\/strong><\/span> on piano, MARC EASENER<\/strong><\/span> on double bass & sousaphone and PAUL BAKER<\/span><\/b> on drums.<\/p>\n

They began the evening with \u2018Clarinet Marmalade\u2019<\/em> and if you know how that one goes, you will know they \u2018hit it\u2019, right from the start.\u00a0 Oh, I do love an exciting first number.\u00a0 First of all, people are possibly still arriving and it is nice for them to hear excitement from outside, before they come in, they then know they ARE<\/strong> going to hear some pretty great jazz!\u00a0 Plus they are not quite ready to get on the dance floor (needing perhaps a drink \u2013 or two).\u00a0 But then the next number, we had two visiting dancers immediately up on the dance floor, Jane and Alan \u2013 brilliant they are too.\u00a0 The number was \u2018<\/em><\/strong>Blues My Naughty Sweetie<\/em>\u2019, to which Leigh sang to (I\u2019ve already told you in the past how great he sings).\u00a0 I made a quick note that Mark was on sousaphone and John on alto sax.<\/p>\n

They played \u2018Leighs Gotta Right To Sing The Blues\u2019<\/em> next. \u00a0I have to confess I\u2019m not sure if it was announced that way, or if Leigh sang it with his own name \u2013 a bit of inner band humour I think \u2013 I never had the chance to ask, perhaps he NEARLY<\/strong> won the lottery.\u00a0 However, I jotted down that John played vibes, with Mark, again, on sousaphone \u2013 lovely stuff.\u00a0 \u2018Stevedore Stomp\u2019<\/em> came next, with\u00a0everyone up dancing (especially Jane and Alan).\u00a0 I particularly noted Paul\u2019s fabulous drumming again and I also noted – clarinet and tenor sax?\u00a0 Must have been John changed mid-stream, he\u2019s so talented.<\/p>\n

Now onto the next one, Rob was able to really show his trombone talent with this next number, \u2018South Rampart Street\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Yes, he is terrific and that is why he has a super band to lead.\u00a0 John was featured next and I think he played just about everything \u2013 I noted whistle, iron and bass clarinet, plus he sang, the tune was \u2018Lulu\u2019s Back In Town\u2019, just brilliant.<\/p>\n

It was Tim\u2019s turn to excel, playing some absolutely beautiful piano notes with \u2018I\u2019m Crazy \u2018Bout My Baby\u2019.\u00a0 He\u2019s another highly talented musician \u2013 being a reed player too. \u00a0It makes me feel so inadequate \u2013 can\u2019t play anything, except the fool!\u00a0 On with the news … It was John, who sang to this next tune, \u2018Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 He has a lovely voice \u2013 sounding very 1920\u2019s\/30\u2019s\/40\u2019s and gorgeous.\u00a0 He also played vibes and tenor sax.<\/p>\n

However, I need to tell you about Leigh, who was superb on trumpet. What a rendition from them all –\u00a0what an ‘engine’.\u00a0 Oh Rob, you have a wonderful band and cannot wait for your next gig \u2013 13th May 2016, to be precise.\u00a0 This was not their last number, but I don\u2019t want to give too much away for that next gig.<\/p>\n
