Here they are again, MAHOGANY HALL STOMPERS<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 They have played for us over the many years here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong> <\/span>and they were back again on Friday 5th<\/span><\/sup> February 2016<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 BRIAN GILES<\/strong><\/span> (cornet) had some band changes as Les Hanscombe<\/span> has retired from playing with them. So the line-up was TIM HUSKISSON<\/strong><\/span> playing on reeds, GEORGE ‘Kid’\u00a0TIDDIMAN<\/strong><\/span> on trombone, joined by \u2018SOUTHEND BOB\u2019 ALBUTT <\/span><\/b>on banjo & vocals, CHRIS MARCHANT <\/strong><\/span>on drums and ROGER CURPHEY <\/span><\/b><\/strong>on double bass.\u00a0 I said it would be yet another Fantastic Fun Filled Friday at Farnborough! \u00a0\u201cFantastic<\/em>\u201d – because they played some fantastic numbers.\u00a0 \u201cFun\u201d – well of course, to hear \u2018Southend Bob\u2019s singing is fun alone.\u00a0 \u201cFilled\u201d – it was certainly filled with \u201cFarnborough\u2019s\u201d punters, who had all of the afore-mentioned!\u00a0 This first picture was sent by Mike with the following attached note, \u201c<\/em>Here’s pix of a brilliant band: \u00a0I think that one could be captioned “Bah Tat” since Curphey is improperly dressed!\u201d<\/em> \u00a0Just Mike\u2019s humour of course, we all would allow Roger to be dressed in whatever – Oh did I say that?<\/p>\n

Some of the numbers played were different to most we hear each week, such as the first number I noted, \u2018Mabel\u2019s Dream\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure I have heard it here before, as with the next number either, \u2018Baby Brown\u2019<\/em>, which was sung by Bob, in his inimitable voice (& humour). \u00a0Then came \u2018Cushion Feet Stomp\u2019<\/em>, I had put three ticks against this one, with the fact that Bob sang some scat vocals \u2013 fabulous.\u00a0 Of course, \u2018The Girls Go Crazy \u2018Bout The Way I Walk\u2019<\/em> is good ol\u2019 favourite of most bands and punters alike, especially when sung by our George and of course\u00a0the \u00a0wonderful clarinet sounds\u00a0from Tim.<\/p>\n

\u00a0They added another favourite \u2013 Jack Teagarden\u2019s \u2018I\u2019ve Got The Right to Sing the Blues\u2019<\/em>, lovely stuff played brilliantly.\u00a0 They also played a Doris Day hit song, \u2018Everywhere You Go (The Sunshine Follows You)\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Wasn\u2019t she a wonderful singer? \u2013 well our Bob sung it with as much aplomb.\u00a0 Plus he also sang the next – \u2018I Aint Gonna Give Nobody None O\u2019 This Jelly Roll\u2019<\/em>, another great old \u2018trad\u2019 number.<\/p>\n

My next choice to mention was \u2018Ace In The Hole\u2019<\/em> performed superbly, with lovely solos from everyone – a\u00a0fantastic drum solo by Chris, sung by Bob AND<\/strong> our audience too!\u00a0 I have to finish, as they did, with that beautiful \u2018Louis\u2019 song, \u2018What A Wonderful World\u2019.\u00a0 What with Brian’s trumpet playing and\u00a0It being\u00a0sung by our \u2018Kid\u2019, it\u00a0meant we all went home feeling very happy, with that song ringing in our ears.\u00a0 Thanks boys.<\/p>\n
