The PHOENIX DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND<\/strong><\/span> were here again on 22nd<\/sup> January 2016<\/strong> at<\/span> Farnborough Jazz Club.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 As you must know by now, ROBIN COOMBS <\/span><\/strong>is recovering from a serious illness, so\u00a0 drummer, ALAN CLARKE<\/span><\/strong>. is running the band in\u00a0his absence.\u00a0 Of course, we all wish Robin well and he has promised that he and Pauline will join our audience as much as possible.\u00a0 Alan booked the usual guys, namely PAUL HIGGS<\/strong><\/span> on trumpet, BILL TODD<\/strong><\/span> on trombone,\u00a0DAVE BARNES<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on piano,\u00a0ROGER CURPHEY<\/strong><\/span> on double bass, JOHN STUART<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on banjo & guitar and CHARLES SHERWOOD<\/strong><\/span> again\u00a0stepped in for Robin, on clarinet.\u00a0 Together, they all had the place buzzing.\u00a0 Charles sounded wonderful, not easy to take over from a band leader and a friend to boot, when that person has been so ill \u2013 I would think it makes you feel horrible.\u00a0 However, second time round, Charles relaxed, like the pro’ he is.<\/p>\n

They began with \u2018Hindustan\u2019<\/em>, a great ol\u2019 favourite and straight away set the pace for the evening.\u00a0 Then what about their next number, \u2018Darktown Strutter\u2019s Ball\u2019<\/em>? \u00a0That certainly takes one back to early dancing days \u2013 doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

Now, I missed the next number (probably someone arrived), but I caught the band laughing about how Alan didn\u2019t get his drum solo when he should have.\u00a0 So they dedicated the next one to him, namely \u2018Cute\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Of course he got all the drum-breaks he could want – ha.\u00a0 Don\u2019t you just love musicians\u2019 humour?\u00a0\u00a0 Then to rest us dancers (well the musicians too, of course), they changed the tempo and Dave sang \u2018Sweet Loraine\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Next came\u00a0a number that just enticed us up again for a line-dance (no one said a word either, they just looked at one-another and got up!).\u00a0 The tune was \u2018Twelfth Street Rag\u2019<\/em> and\u00a0by coincidence, twelve of us got up.\u00a0 What a\u00a0great\u00a0song, I clearly remember loving this one as a little girl \u2013 \u201cdo, wacka do, wacka do, wacka do\u201d remember?\u00a0 Bill sang the next one, \u2018Don\u2019t Get Around Much Anymore\u2019 (he\u2019s got a good range) <\/em>and then John\u00a0was featured,\u00a0backed by the rest of the \u2018engine\u2019, the song was \u2018Honeysuckle Rose\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

Paul is a brilliant trumpeter, but I particularly made a note of Paul\u2019s playing here (with his lovely iridescent green trumpet) and the number was \u2018At The Jazz Band Ball\u2019<\/em>, marvelous. \u00a0Plus, everyone had great solos in \u2018Struttin\u2019 With Some Barbecue\u2019,<\/em> absolutely fabulous too.\u00a0 We had enjoyed the line-dance before, so much, that everyone got up again to \u2018Cantina \u00a0Band\u2019<\/em> with a Charleston thread and if I\u2019ve got that right, it was a number one hit from the \u2018Star Wars\u2019 film and written by John Williams. What a fabulous number \u2013 they must do it again \u2026 please?<\/p>\n

Looking forward to their next gig, which is on 11th March 2016. Jazz and dancing certainly can chase all the blues away and will warm you up at the same time.\u00a0 If you missed us this week, then make a point of coming and give us a try. \u00a0The music starts at 8:00pm till 11:00pm. \u00a0The bar has club prices, with plenty of free car parking and a wonderful friendly atmosphere and entrance is just \u00a310.<\/p>\n
