On Friday, 15th January 2016<\/span><\/strong>, we had something special to help me celebrate my birthday, the MARTYN BROTHERS<\/strong><\/span> with a difference.\u00a0 Emile was away in New Orleans with his Dad (Barry Martyn), so it was the Martyn Brother (singular) – BEN MARTYN<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on double bass & vocals, playing here at FARNBOROUGH\u00a0JAZZ CLUB<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0.\u00a0\u00a0Ben had booked\u00a0ALLEN BEECHEY<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on cornet, GEORGE SIMMONDS<\/strong><\/span> on trombone, RICHIE HOWARD<\/strong><\/span> on clarinet, IAN BEETLESTONE<\/strong><\/span> on piano, JOHN \u2018flashback radio\u2019 RUSCOE<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on guitar and DOM COLES<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0on drums.\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019ve got it, this was a special with there being seven of them, proving to be a very exciting evening \u2013 well they are never anything else, but exciting \u2013 plenty of exuberance from these young men.<\/p>\n

Great to see young men playing \u2018traditional\u2019 and \u2018New Orleans\u2019 music, and this is how the evening went. They played Hanley\u2019s \u2018Saint Louis Blues\u2019<\/em> (one of Louis Armstrong\u2019s numbers).\u00a0 My next choice to mention is \u2018Shake That Thing\u2019<\/em> of Kid Ory\u2019s Creole Jazz Band fame and they played it absolutely brilliantly, What a front line.\u00a0 \u00a0it sure got everyone\u00a0up to\u00a0dance.\u00a0 Then they played a jazzed up version of \u2018Just a Little While To Stay Here\u2019<\/em>, giving it a lot of light and shade \u2013 showing their maturity with this music – wonderful.<\/p>\n

Ben sang and played the piano to his own song \u2018My Heart stays In New Orleans\u2019.<\/em> Not having had a piano with them here before, we had never seen him play one.\u00a0 It was lovely to see his other \u2018bow\u2019.\u00a0 With the next number, we were up instantly and on the dance floor for our line-dance – \u2018Cheek To Cheek\u2019<\/em> of course \u2013 fantastic.\u00a0 The\u00a0‘engine boys’ certainly did their bit.\u00a0 Then\u00a0George sang \u2018I\u2019ll Be Glad When You\u2019re Dead You Rascal You\u2019<\/em> and what a song, one of those \u2018in your face\u2019 songs and George made a great job with it.<\/p>\n

Then Ben called \u2018Brown Ale Pete\u2019 (Peter Marr) out of the audience to sing.\u00a0 Pete chose to sing \u2018Rosetta\u2019<\/em>, it is times like this, I so wished I was recording.\u00a0 Pete is such a lovely character and sings so well. \u00a0Ben followed on with singing \u2018The Glory Of Love\u2019<\/em>, another wonderful singer (oh so many great jazz singers about).\u00a0 Well, George ended the evening singing a Dixieland number (from the film The Jungle Book\u2019) \u2018I Wan\u2019na Be Like You\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 It was Louis Prima and his New Orleans Gang that made this brilliant tune, with the cartoon emulating what he and the boys did whilst playing it. \u00a0You can see some rare footage of this and the story behind it, click\u00a0on: https:\/\/www.youtube<\/strong>.com\/watch?v=rV8HrpOu1FA<\/a> \u00a0\u00a0Young George was fabulous singing it too.\u00a0 Thanks Martyn Boys, for making my birthday such a wonderful one, even though it was actually three days before.\u00a0 Well, when you get to my age (thirty-several and a bit more) you are glad to\u00a0reach another one.<\/p>\n

Nothing like \u2018live\u2019 jazz and great a younger generation is enjoying playing it too.<\/p>\n
