{"id":27,"date":"2013-09-05T18:28:52","date_gmt":"2013-09-05T18:28:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=27"},"modified":"2015-03-14T10:00:49","modified_gmt":"2015-03-14T10:00:49","slug":"george-kid-tidimans-all-stars-6th-september-2013-and-tony-pitts-all-stars-30th-august-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=27","title":{"rendered":"Tony Pitt&#8217;s All Stars, 30\/8\/2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>TONY PITT&#8217;S ALL STARS<\/strong>, here last <strong>Friday, 30<sup>th<\/sup> August 2013<\/strong>, was as expected, BRILLIANT. \u00a0<strong>TONY PITT,\u00a0<\/strong>a fabulous banjo player (as mentioned last week), had put together a fantastic bunch of musicians, some of the best names in British jazz and we did not exaggerate.\u00a0 <b>ROY WILLIAMS<\/b> was on trombone and as written, was voted No.1 jazz trombonist of the year, on four consecutive years during 1980\u2019s.\u00a0 He has played with <b>Terry Lightfoot, Alex Welsh and Humphrey Littleton Bands <\/b>and has guested with many more international stars such as <b>Bud Freeman, Wild Bill Davison and Ruby Braff<\/b>, it certainly shows.\u00a0 We were very proud he agreed to play for us \u2013 his first and we certainly hope not the last.\u00a0 \u00a0<b>ALAN GRESTY<\/b> was<b> <\/b>on trumpet.\u00a0 He has played with<b> Monty Sunshine\u2019s Band<\/b> for many years.\u00a0 <b>AL NICHOLLS<\/b> on soprano &amp; tenor sax (also his first time at Farnborough and hope he returns too).\u00a0 He has played with <b>Paul Gelato<\/b> and <b>Blue Harlem<\/b>.\u00a0 <b>ANDY LAWRENCE<\/b> was on double bass and (as previously said last week) was also with <b>Terry Lightfoot <\/b>for many years.\u00a0 <b>JOHN ELLMER<\/b> was on drums.\u00a0 We found, no CV for him, but Keith and I could vouch for him \u2013he\u2019s brilliant, but what I didn\u2019t tell you, was he is also a marvellous clarinet player (not that he played it last Friday).\u00a0 <b>Tony\u2019s<\/b> CV is with such great bands as <b>Alex Welsh, Mike Cotton, Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, Alan Elsdon, Laurie Chescoe, Terry Lightfoot and our old friend, Phil Mason<\/b>.\u00a0 Right at the start, it was full-on hot, hot jazz with their first number \u2018I Found a New Baby\u2019.\u00a0 Next was \u2018Lily of the Valley\u2019, with great solos and sung by Alan and of course audience participation (fabulous sax).\u00a0 \u2018Some of These Days\u2019 was superb, with the front line playing a little bit of \u2018bells\u2019 (similar to that number \u2018Chimes Blues).\u00a0 Then they played \u2018Chinatown, My Chinatown\u2019, with amazing solos from everyone. \u00a0The next number was Roy\u2019s feature, called \u2018I Love You, Samantha\u2019.\u00a0 Roy said he hadn\u2019t played it in years.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t have guessed it though, he played it with such sympathy, so beautiful.\u00a0 Fats Waller\u2019s number \u2018Keeping out of Mischief\u2019 was followed with \u2018S Wonderful\u2019, which was Alan\u2019s feature.\u00a0 What a great young player he is \u2013 wow.\u00a0 \u2018Davenport Blues\u2019 was Alan\u2019s feature (I was dancing and hadn\u2019t written a remark, except \u201cso pure\u201d, I think that says it all!\u00a0\u00a0 They finished off with \u2018Blues My Naughty Sweetie\u2019.\u00a0 What an excellent ending &#8211; brilliant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Look out for Tony\u2019s next date with us, being 18<sup>th<\/sup> October 2013.\u00a0 I wonder who he will book for that date.\u00a0 Whoever they will be, they cannot better last week, but if it is as good, DON\u2019T MISS IT!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nice to be able to write such words \u2013 but they are all true!!!!<\/p>\n<p>Diane and Keith<\/p>\n<p>Farnborough Jazz Club<\/p>\n<h6>\u2018Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me\u2019 &#8211; Charles McCarron, Casey Morgan &amp; Arthur Swanstrom (1919)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Chinatown, My Chinatown\u2019 \u2013 (m) Jean Schwartz, (l) William Jerome (1910)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Davenport Blues\u2019 \u2013 Bix Beiderbecke (1925) &#8211; named after his hometown.<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018I Found a New Baby\u2019 &#8211; Jack Palmer and Spencer Williams (1926)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018I Love you, Samantha\u2019 \u2013 Cole Porter (1956)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Keeping out Of Mischief Now\u2019 \u2013 Thomas \u2018Fats\u2019 Waller (circa 1920\u2019s, r.1937)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Lily of the Valley\u2019 &#8211; hymn written by William Charles Fry (1837\u20131882) in London for the\u00a0<a title=\"Salvation Army\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salvation_Army\">Salvation Army<\/a>. \u00a0Ira D.
