{"id":262,"date":"2013-12-28T17:04:24","date_gmt":"2013-12-28T17:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=262"},"modified":"2014-09-16T12:03:47","modified_gmt":"2014-09-16T12:03:47","slug":"dart-valley-stompers-20122013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=262","title":{"rendered":"Dart Valley Stompers, 20\/12\/2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">What a fabulous party we had on <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Friday, 20<sup>th<\/sup> December 2013<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> here at our <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Farnborough Jazz Club<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">, with the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">DART VALLEY STOMPERS<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> providing the entertainment.\u00a0 The Sports Club Committee had worked hard and managed to have the new floor installed during the week, working right up to the day before!\u00a0 Yes, a tight squeeze (especially as they also had a booking on that Thursday evening too), so thanks guys \u00a0for all your hard work &#8211; &amp; girls for the Xmas d\u00e9cor as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was our last gig of the year &#8211; our Xmas Party and as predicted, we certainly did \u2018live it up\u2019 with a \u2018full house\u2019.\u00a0 So, first of all, Keith and I wish to thank everyone for pre-booking, needed for food ordering.\u00a0 Only a handful of you had to cancel on the day.\u00a0 However, a few more of you took \u2018pot luck\u2019 and just turned up anyway!\u00a0 One of our regulars said there were faces he didn\u2019t know.\u00a0 I told him Keith and I knew everyone (bar two new faces) some from way back in \u2018Badgers Mount\u2019 days and as having said on previous occasions, thank goodness clubs do have a nucleus of visitors. \u00a0\u00a0Now to tell you about the evening.\u00a0 The food was produced by our friend Peter (a London pro chef) and his young prot\u00e9g\u00e9, Dan.\u00a0 I think all who participated, would agree, the spread was splendid, so thanks you two.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now what about the band. \u00a0As mentioned last week, they hail from Devon, but are extremely popular throughout the Country.\u00a0 Their first visit to us was back in December 2011.\u00a0 <b>JEREMY HUGGETT<\/b>, their founder\/leader (clarinet, Saxes &amp; vocals) was joined by <b>GRAHAM TREVARTON<\/b> (cornet, trumpet &amp; vocals), <b>RON MILFORD<\/b> (trombone &amp; vocals), <b>EDDIE EDWARDS<\/b> (banjo), <b>LUKAS DRINKWATER<\/b> (bass) and <b>CHRIS STOCKINGS<\/b> (drums).\u00a0 \u00a0I said last week, I had to sleuth for Eddie on the internet to check what he played, saying he just might be \u2018Eddie the Eagle\u2019.\u00a0 What was so spooky is I had prepared last week\u2019s message during the morning, but wanted to update the previous Friday\u2019s news before publishing it.\u00a0 What\u2019s spooky, you say?\u00a0 Well, if any of you had watched \u2018Egg Heads\u2019, you would have known Eddie \u2018The Eagle\u2019 Edwards was a Challenger in that afternoon\u2019s programme!\u00a0 Yes, I know it\u2019s a coincidence, but I mean to say, wow!\u00a0 Anyway, to continue\u2026. I was so busy, it was very hard to make my notes of the evening, but what an overall feel I was soaking in &#8211; what a band.\u00a0 There was so much dancing going on.\u00a0 Their first number began with a drum start to \u2018Willie the Weeper\u2019, a lovely \u2018trad\u2019 jazz favourite.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to mention \u2018Jambalaya\u2019, just great to dance to aye.\u00a0 Then there was \u2018Birth of the Blues\u2019, sung by Ron and lots of us in the audience too.\u00a0 Graham also sang, his number being \u2018I Would Do Anything for you\u2019.\u00a0 Of course the food was served during the first break, so I\u2019m not sure what number followed, but I know \u2018Hello Dolly\u2019 was sung by Ron and \u2018Streets of the City\u2019 was a brilliant tune that changed key a couple of times \u2013 brilliant.\u00a0 There were few requests, which the band kindly agreed to play, those being \u2018Sweet Lorraine\u2019, \u2018Down in Honky Tonk Town\u2019 and \u2018Blueberry Hill\u2019.\u00a0 I can\u2019t remember when we did our line-dance.\u00a0 However, Steve (a regular), having been to New Orleans, had asked some weeks ago, for a Brolly Parade.\u00a0 Keith hadn\u2019t heard me mention anything on the mike the week before, plus hadn\u2019t notice any brollies being brought in, so it was a complete surprise to him (I think there were about 30 of them).\u00a0 Obviously \u2018Bourbon Street Parade\u2019 was the number and was sung by both Jeremy and Ron.\u00a0 Keith said it was the highlight of the evening &#8211; what a parade.\u00a0 It has been four or five years since we last had one, so was great fun (thanks Steve for suggesting it).\u00a0 Several photos were taken, so please may I ask you for copies to put here on this website, ta. \u00a0Just one extra point, the band didn\u2019t leave till gone 12.30am and would not have got home till at least 6.00am!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now before closing, we would also like to thank Ian (Sports Club\u2019s President) who rushes home after work (in central London) every week, to unlock the club house early for us, plus to get the bar ready and on occasions run it too.\u00a0 Also to thank our bar staff, Val and Harry, Barb and Cath, for their hard work (including helping to clear up afterwards) and not leaving until at least 1.00am and all with cheery smiling faces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yes, also a thanks to everyone, you did make it one of our most memorable Christmas parties to end 2013 out in style.\u00a0 We surely did \u2018keep on dancing\u2019 and yes, we did have the correct music!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, we would like to thank everyone who have managed to support us throughout 2013, including all the wonderful jazz bands who have appeared here.\u00a0 <b>Of course we wish everyone a very Healthy and Happy New Year in 2014<\/b>.\u00a0 This includes all our jazz media friends (Just Jazz Magazine, Jazz Guide and Kent Jazz News etc.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Don\u2019t forget, our next gig will be <b>10<sup>th<\/sup> January 2014<\/b> (8.30pm-11.30pm), with <b>PHOENIX DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND<\/b> to celebrate my 17<sup>th<\/sup> birthday (now then, stop laughing!!!!!).<\/p>\n<p>Diane and Keith<\/p>\n<p>(Phew, I know, I do go on, don\u2019t I &#8211; sorry!)<\/p>\n<h6><em>\u2018Birth of the Blues\u2019 <\/em><em>\u2013<\/em> <em>(m) Ray Henderson.
