{"id":2494,"date":"2015-11-10T17:10:12","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T17:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=2494"},"modified":"2016-07-10T10:53:07","modified_gmt":"2016-07-10T10:53:07","slug":"mahogany-hall-stompers-6th-november-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=2494","title":{"rendered":"Mahogany Hall Stompers, 6th November 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>MAHOGANY HALL STOMPERS<\/strong><\/span> have been appearing at our <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong><\/span> on and off for many years now and were back to play again for us on <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Friday 6<sup>th<\/sup> November 2015<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 Band leader, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>BRIAN GILES<\/strong><\/span> (cornet) had booked <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>TIM HUSKISSON<\/strong><\/span> on reeds, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>LES HANSCOMBE<\/strong> <\/span>on trombone &amp; vocals, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>\u2018SOUTHEND BOB\u2019 ALLBUT<\/strong><\/span> on banjo &amp; vocals, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>CHRIS MARCHANT <\/strong><\/span>on drums and <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>DEREK PRING<\/strong><\/span> on double bass.\u00a0 I did tell you this was another line-up who would delight you and they did just that.\u00a0 Let me tell of some of the wonderful tunes they chose to entertain you with.\u00a0 One of their first numbers was <em>\u2018All the Girls Go Crazy About the Way I Walk\u2019<\/em>, which certainly put smiles on everyone\u2019s faces.\u00a0 They followed up with a great dancing tune (of King Oliver\u2019s Creole Jazz Band &amp; Louis Armstrong\u2019s fame), namely <em>\u2018Buddy\u2019s Habits\u2019<\/em>, certainly lots of fun.\u00a0 There was plenty of dancing to <em>\u2018Cushion Feet Stomp\u2019<\/em>, followed by that foot-stomping number of Ken Colyer\u2019s, <em>\u2018Postman\u2019s Lament\u2019<\/em> (sung by Bob).\u00a0 What about <em>\u2018Hiawatha Rag\u2019<\/em> made famous by Acker Bilk and Terry Lightfoot &#8211; I must mention that one.\u00a0 The place was buzzing by that time and Bob, with his rich baritone voice sang <em>\u2018I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues\u2019<\/em>, what a great voice he has.\u00a0 A few of us had fun with <em>\u2018The Charleston\u2019<\/em>, which is one of the favourite tunes for the gang to perform our \u2018Charleston\u2019 style line-dance.\u00a0 Maybe not all of our audience enjoy us doing it, but they put up with it because everyone who takes part have so much fun (you don\u2019t even need to know how to do it, we just all try &#8211; ha!)\u00a0 The band actually intermingled the tune with <em>\u2018Please Don\u2019t Talk About Me When I\u2019m Gone\u2019<\/em> \u2013 which is a number that Keith and I often sing to each other (perhaps just the title line only, ha) I wonder why.\u00a0 The last number to mention is a good old favourite of many bands who play here, the one I call \u2018My Dear Mr Shane\u2019, actually called <em>\u2018Bei Mir Bist Du Shon\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 They all played fantastically, but I particularly jotted down that Les was great on trombone and Chris on drums &#8211; what a number to end on.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Mike was away on holiday, so no photos this week.\u00a0 Sorry Mahogony\u2019s, there will be some next time.\u00a0 Next week we have Brian Carrick&#8217;s Algiers Stompers.<\/p>\n<p>Your hosts,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diane &amp; Keith <\/strong><\/p>\n<h6><em>\u2018All the Girls Go Crazy about the Way I Walk\u2019 \u2013 Kid Ory (1945) disputed earlier by Buddy Bolden (1944)?<\/em><\/h6>\n<h6><em>\u2018Bei Mir Bist Du Shon\u2019 \u2013 (m) Sholom Secunda, (l) Jacob Jacobs (1932).
