{"id":248,"date":"2013-12-11T13:43:09","date_gmt":"2013-12-11T13:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=248"},"modified":"2016-03-26T16:50:47","modified_gmt":"2016-03-26T16:50:47","slug":"laurie-chescoes-reunion-band-friday-6th-december-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=248","title":{"rendered":"Laurie Chescoe\u2019s Reunion Band, 6\/12\/2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">The famous<\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> \u2018LAURIE CHESCOE\u2019S REUNION BAND\u2019<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> appeared on <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Friday, 6<sup>th<\/sup> December 2013<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> here at the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Farnborough Jazz Club<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">.\u00a0 Drummer Laurie had his usual band of\u00a0 musicians with him, namely <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">ALLAN (aka \u2018LORD ARSENAL\u2019) BRADLEY<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> on trumpet, piano &amp; vocals, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">JOHN LEE<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> on reeds, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">DAVE HEWITT<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> on trombone<\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">, COLIN BRAY<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> on piano\/soprano sax, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">JIM DOUGLAS<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> on guitar &amp; banjo and <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">PETER SKIVINGTON<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> on bass ukulele. What a super line-up aye?\u00a0 Not so many of you turned up.\u00a0 I suppose Xmas parties, or perhaps a pantomime are to blame.\u00a0 Our own dear bar managers, Val &amp; Harry were in \u2018Jack &amp; the Beanstalk\u2019 pantomime in Knockholt.\u00a0 I saw them last Saturday and very professional and funny it was too.\u00a0 Well done to all the cast.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0However, all those who missed Laurie, missed a very entertaining evening, quite our very own variety performance. \u00a0Lord Arsenal was very entertaining as compere and they started off with a rip-roaring version of \u2018At the Jazz Band Ball\u2019 just to set the standard.\u00a0 \u00a0Allan then introduced the next number as \u2018On the Sunny Side of the Street\u2019.\u00a0 Our audient comedian, Len, called out \u201cor \u2018Just Wishful Thinking\u2019 aye\u201d.\u00a0 Allan played a lovely muted trumpet.\u00a0 Another number to mention was a Southern Ragtime one called \u2018Memphis Blues\u2019.\u00a0 Plus a Louis Armstrong number called \u2018Bill Bailey\u2019, sung by Allan.\u00a0 Dave played his baritone horn next to \u2018Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider\u2019, what a lovely sound too.\u00a0 Their next number was \u2018L-O-V-E\u2019.\u00a0 Allan changed places with Colin with Allan on piano and Colin on soprano sax.\u00a0 Colin was amazing, with his legs akimbo, what rhythm he has in his body, as well as being so talented \u2013 quite a genius.\u00a0 Nat King Cole recorded this number in 1964, who sadly died just one month later.\u00a0 The next number I want to mention just happens to be one of my all-time jazz favourite, called \u2018Christopher Columbus\u2019.\u00a0 If that wasn\u2019t enough, John Lee was featured in the next number, \u2018Guess I\u2019ll Hang My Tears Out to Dry\u2019 and this number\u2019s composer went on to composed for both Sinatra &amp; Streisand, both my all-time favourite singers. \u00a0\u2018Move your Body Over\u2019 came next, again with Colin on soprano sax and Alan on piano and vocals.\u00a0 I wondered why there was an ironing board amongst their kit, but then forgot it.\u00a0 However, it became obvious it was for the next number!\u00a0 Colin showed us once again what a performer he is!\u00a0 He proceeded to set up this ironing board, then out came a Xylophone and Colin played it magnificently to \u2018China Boy\u2019 (again with Allan on piano). \u00a0\u00a0My last number to mention was Jim featured on guitar with \u2018That\u2019s All\u2019.\u00a0 Just another evening of great music and dancing once again.\u00a0 Laurie certainly kept the whole evening going with his drumming (and continual smiling).\u00a0 That\u2019s why I said \u2018yippee\u2019 last week!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Diane &amp; Keith<\/p>\n<h6>\u2018At The Jazz Band Ball\u2019 \u2013 (m) Nick LaRocca, Larry Shields (1917) (l\u2019s added 1950 by Johnny Mercer)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Bill Bailey\u2019 \u2013 Hughie Cannon (1902)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018China Boy\u2019 \u2013 Phil Boutelje &amp; Dick Winfree (1922)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Christopher Columbus\u2019 &#8211; Glen Miller, Joe Garland &amp; Andy Razaf (1959)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Guess I\u2019ll Hang My Tears out to Dry\u2019 \u2013 (m) Jule Styne, (l) Sammy Cahn (1944)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider\u2019 &#8211; (m) Eddie Munson, (l) Eddie Leonard (1903)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018L-O-V-E\u2019 \u2013 (m) Bert Kaempfert, (l) Milt Gabler (1963)<\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018Memphis Blues\u2019 \u2013 (m) W.C.
