PHOENIX DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND<\/strong><\/span> played for us at the Farnborough Jazz Club<\/strong><\/span> on 23rd<\/span><\/sup> October 2015<\/strong><\/span>.. \u00a0The band is\u00a0usually led by\u00a0ROBIN COOMBS<\/span>, <\/strong>but Robin, who was here tonight (with his wife Pauline)\u00a0and thankfully recovering from what was a very serious illness (flown home by emergency jet from Cuba).\u00a0 However, CHARLES SHERWOOD<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>replaced him on clarinet, alto and tenor sax.\u00a0 PAUL HIGGS<\/span><\/b> was on trumpet, BILL TODD<\/strong><\/span> on trombone, DAVE BARNES<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on piano, ROGER CURPHEY <\/strong><\/span>on double bass, JOHN STUART<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on banjo & guitar and ALAN CLARKE<\/strong><\/span> on drums.<\/p>\n

The band was obviously suffering with shock, yet you would not have guessed by the evening\u2019s entertainment.\u00a0 \u2018Struttin\u2019 With Some Barbecue\u2019<\/em><\/span> \u2013 what a number to start the evening off with \u2013 even being a Louis Armstrong hit, Paul was marvellous on trumpeter and certainly entertained us.\u00a0 The whole band were great, as with their next tune, \u2018Wabash Blues\u2019<\/em><\/span>, we had the dancers out in full.\u00a0 It was such a great jaunty number and mid-tempo, so good fun.\u00a0 But the next number I will mention was the opposite, being fast number, with no dancers at all, we just listened to their brilliant playing to \u2018I Found A New Baby\u2019<\/em><\/span> \u2013 wow, so enjoyable, with a superb drum solo (all brilliant solos actually).<\/p>\n

\"W.C.<\/a>

W.C. Handy, known as “Father of the Blues”. Composer of Saint Louis Blues’. Born 16th November 1873 – Died 28th March 1958.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

The next tune has quite a story attached to it.\u00a0 One I\u2019ve already told to you a couple of years ago, but is worth another mention. \u00a0It is about Dave, who is somewhat of a composer.<\/p>\n

\"Dave<\/a>

A number of years ago, Dave met up with an old friend, Ian Grant, who was the lyricist of \u2018Let There Be Love\u2019 (1940)<\/em>. \u00a0He showed Dave some lyrics he\u2019d written fifty years before, called \u2018We\u2019re Handing it to You Mr Handy, for Handing us the St. Louis Blues\u2019<\/em><\/span>, (referring to W.C. Handy, composer of St. Louis Blues<\/em>.)\u00a0 Ian asked Dave if he could put some music to it. \u00a0The end result is they played it for us and AGAIN, I wished I had recorded it. It had a lovely beat and certainly packed the dance floor again. I might be back\u00a0to add\u00a0a photo of Ian (if Dave can find one).<\/p>\n

\"Charles<\/a>

The next one was a special feature for Charles, \u2018Strangers On The Shore\u2019<\/em> <\/span>and what a wonderful job he made of it \u2013 certainly tons of applause too.\u00a0 \u2018Chinatown, My Chinatown\u2019<\/span><\/em> is another number I love to hear and they all played terrific solos.\u00a0 They changed key on their last chorus (and I remember\u00a0John and\u00a0Dave somehow played a chimes chorus).<\/p>\n

Paul featured next with his lovely iridescence\u00a0green trumpet and super-duper he was with \u2018Stardust\u2019<\/span>.<\/em> It is a beautiful song and Paul plays with such feeling, so of course,\u00a0brilliant to listen to.\u00a0\u00a0We performed our \u2018Charleston style line-dance to their next tune, \u2018At The Jazz Band Ball\u2019<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 Certainly a fast one, so we were quite exhausted at the end, goodness how the musicians felt – ha. My last number to mention is \u2018S\u2019Wonderful\u2019<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 Charles played tenor sax (such a lovely player), with Dave singing and\u00a0must mention Alan on drums and our Roger on double bass – they have a lovely rapport.<\/p>\n
