We had some of Britain’s top jazz musicians with TONY PITT\u2019S ALL STARS<\/b><\/span> at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/b><\/span> on FRIDAY, 9<\/b>th October 2015<\/b><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 Banjoist TONY<\/b><\/span> was joined by DENNY ILETT (SNR)<\/span><\/b><\/strong> on trumpet (he has a famous guitarist son), DAVE HEWITT<\/b><\/span> on trombone, AL NICHOLS<\/span><\/b> on reeds, ANDY LAWRENCE<\/b><\/span> <\/strong>on double bass and JOHN TYSON<\/b><\/span> on drums.<\/p>\n

They looked and played brilliantly and just to show you, here is a sample of what they played.\u00a0 The first number was \u2018When You\u2019re Smiling\u2019<\/em> and in my notes, I had written \u2018you should hear that trumpet\u2019.\u00a0 Says a lot, doesn\u2019t it!\u00a0 They were all absolutely amazing \u2013 there\u2019s playing and there\u2019s playing, if you know what I mean.\u00a0 These guys \u2018have it\u2019.\u00a0 Gushing? Of course! Denny sang the next tune, \u2018Look Down That Lonesome River\u2019<\/em> and I noted that Al played tenor sax.\u00a0 Denny also sang \u2018When You and I were young Maggie\u2019<\/em> and of course a great jazz voice.<\/p>\n

We were all \u2018flying\u2019 (dancing I mean) to their wonderful rendition of \u2018Bourbon Street Parade\u2019<\/em>, with fabulous changing of key.\u00a0 Tony\u2019s banjo playing shows why he has the best wanting to play with him.\u00a0 John was featured on drums next, and what terrific drumming to \u2018I Found A New Baby\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 He is a brilliant drummer and I had written in my notes \u2018fab-u-lous\u2019, so no need to write anything else.<\/p>\n

Next they featured Denny with \u2018Bad Penny Blues\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Denny is such an exciting player and with this number, he also added some playing on his mouthpiece only.\u00a0 Not many would be able to achieve doing that so brilliantly.\u00a0 I must mention \u2018Sweet Georgia Brown\u2019<\/em> and how wonderful Al was, playing tenor sax.<\/p>\n

Several \u2018ticks\u2019 against the next number, meant I mustn\u2019t miss this out either.\u00a0 The wonderful Hoagy Carmichael\u2019s \u2018Riverboat Shuffle\u2019 <\/em>being the tune (recoded first by Bix Beiderbecke). \u00a0Al played alto and I had no other notes because we were all out on the dance floor, having tons of fun. \u00a0As for their last number, if we had to all go home, it was exhilarating to go with \u2018West End Blues\u2019<\/em> still ringing in our ears.\u00a0 Denny played a stunning intro and Dave was fabulous on trombone.\u00a0 I personally cannot wait for their next gig here.<\/p>\n
