STORYVILLE JASSBAND from Holland<\/strong> <\/span>gave us a wonderful evening on 28th<\/sup> August 2015<\/strong> <\/span>at our Farnborough Jazz Club<\/span>. <\/strong>\u00a0Last time they were here, they \u2018brought the house down\u2019.\u00a0 That was back in April 2013.\u00a0 This Friday, was every bit as good.\u00a0 Their leader and cornet player then, was Ruud Nieuwenhuijzen<\/strong><\/span>. \u00a0Unfortunately he is ill with ALS and is unable to play with the band from now on.\u00a0 This brilliant optimist, his wife Paula and two friends were at the gig, to support the band. \u00a0\u00a0Ruud is a fantastic man and replaced himself – most would have done so with a lesser player –\u00a0ha, but not him – he found a great cornet player, namely PETER VAN DE GEIJN<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 Peter was joined by HENK VAN DE VEN<\/strong> <\/span>on clarinet, PETER DOBBE<\/strong> <\/span>on trombone, vocals & guitar, BERRY SCHUURING<\/strong><\/span> on drums, HEIN VAN ROOIJEN<\/strong> <\/span>on double bass and HENK VAN MULLIGEN<\/strong><\/span> on banjo & guitar.<\/p>\n

It certainly was another top quality treat for you.\u00a0 I was having such a great time myself, so again I had trouble writing my notes \u2013 but here goes.\u00a0 My first note is of the Gershwin boys number, \u2018The <\/em>Man I Love\u2019<\/em>, featuring Peter (D) on trombone – fabulous.<\/p>\n

Followed on with another feature for Henk on clarinet, called \u2018Summer Set\u2019<\/em> (the \u00a0number Acker Bilk wrote for his daughter).\u00a0 Next, I jotted down Henk\u2019s performance of Django Reinhardt\u2019s \u2018Nuage\u2019<\/em>, a hard act to follow, but Peter (D) managed easily, singing \u2018Doin\u2019 the New Low-Down\u2019<\/em>, vocally backed by all of them (what singing \u2013 great).\u00a0 \u2018Why Should I Hesitate\u2019<\/em> was brilliant with Peter (Van D.G) playing Louis Armstrong style, plus Peter (D) again singing – what a lovely number.\u00a0 We enjoyed our Charleston-style line-dance when they played \u2018St. Philip Street Breakdown\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Then we had a real treat watching a lovely couple (Jane and Alan) who are fantastic dancers,\u00a0visiting from the Hastings\u00a01066 Jazz\u00a0club.\u00a0 They danced to the band’s brilliant performance of \u2018Running Wild\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Berry gave a super drum solo (yes, Jane and Alan kept up with him too).\u00a0 Their last number was spectacular as it involved three numbers in one!\u00a0 (I had a hard job writing the names down as was busy dancing, but Ruud has since\u00a0helped me with them).\u00a0 The first piece was \u2018Joseph, Joseph\u2019<\/em> (with Henk Ven leading on clarinet), the second piece was <\/em>Edith Piaf\u2019s \u2018Padam padam\u2019<\/em> and third piece was Kenny Ball\u2019s \u2018I Still Love You All\u2019.\u00a0 <\/em>Very impressive and certainly completed a fabulous evening with a great bunch of guys from Holland.\u00a0 We hope they\u00a0will be back to us another year. \u00a0\u00a0Meanwhile, our very best wishes and love go to Ruud and Paula<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 \u2018Keep your peckers up\u2019.<\/p>\n
