{"id":218,"date":"2013-11-14T12:28:43","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T12:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=218"},"modified":"2019-11-01T15:01:48","modified_gmt":"2019-11-01T15:01:48","slug":"bill-phelans-muskrat-ramblers-15112013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farnboroughjazz.co.uk\/?p=218","title":{"rendered":"Bill Phelan\u2019s Muskrat Ramblers, 15\/11\/2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"><b>\u2018BILL PHELAN\u2019S<\/b>\u00a0<b>MUSKRAT RAMBLERS\u2019<\/b> returned on <b>Friday, 15<sup>th<\/sup> November 2013<\/b> at <b>Farnborough Jazz Club.<\/b>\u00a0 They played as a six-piece band, with leader\u00a0<b>BILL PHELAN<\/b>\u00a0on trumpet, what a lovely guy.\u00a0 The rest of the gang were <b>ALAN CRESSWELL<\/b> on reeds (Alan was with <b>Max Collie Rhythm Aces <\/b>for 18months),\u00a0<b>GRAHAM WISEMAN<\/b><b> <\/b>on trombone,<b>\u00a0CHRIS THOMSON<\/b> on double bass, <b>JOHNNY MCCALLUM<\/b>\u00a0on banjo (who was with <b>Kenny Ball<\/b> for 20years), plus <b>PAUL NORMAN<\/b> on drums.\u00a0\u00a0Of course, they began their repertoire with \u2018Muskrat Ramble\u2019, which was followed with \u2018Beale Street Blues\u2019.\u00a0 To begin with, our audience were all more talkative than usual, but I think the band felt a little mystified as to why it was only the usual four dancers for a bit.\u00a0 It was our first really cold Friday evening of the year, so I think they were all trying to warm themselves up.\u00a0 The band just kept playing their wonderful music.\u00a0 However, the audience soon relaxed and got up to dance and our real atmosphere blossomed.\u00a0 The next number I wish to mention is Alan\u2019s feature song, namely \u2018Petite Fleur\u2019.\u00a0 How beautifully he played it too.\u00a0 Another great number was \u2018Buona Sera\u2019.\u00a0 Johnny sung this and certainly our dancers flooded the dance floor (I jotted down \u2018lovely muted trombone from Graham\u2019).\u00a0 \u2018The Loveliest Night of the Year\u2019 came next.\u00a0 This song was adapted for the film <em>\u2018The Great Caruso\u2019<\/em> sung by Mario Lanza.\u00a0 Obviously, we all remember this song well, so we all sang it too.\u00a0 Bill asked us to take our partners for a waltz.\u00a0 Then the tempo stepped up to a quickstep.\u00a0 Lovely jubbly.\u00a0 They also played Buddy Bolden\u2019s number called \u2018Careless Love\u2019.\u00a0 Then came \u2018Ciribiribin\u2019, a beautiful number and when it ended, I asked to speak on the mike.\u00a0 I told everyone that whilst doing my research, I came across the song writer (good looking too) called Jack Lawrence (<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jacklawrencesongwriter.com\/\">www.jacklawrencesongwriter.com<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> ).\u00a0 Aged 95yrs, Jack was still answering commenters.\u00a0 I am not in the habit of commenting on websites, but felt compelled to do so (was it his age, or his good looks!).\u00a0 Unfortunately I realised as I pressed \u2018send\u2019 that Jack had died two years earlier in 2009 (one month off his 97<\/span><sup>th<\/sup><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">).\u00a0 I quickly sent an apology in case of any upset to his family members.\u00a0 Back came a reply from a dear friend of Jack\u2019s who said it had been like a time-warp.\u00a0 I am now in contact with this lovely lady \u2013 also called Diane. \u00a0\u00a0To continue \u2026 Bill himself, featured beautifully with the next Hoagy Carmichael number called \u2018Stardust\u2019.\u00a0 I remember Johnny played a wonder solo on guitar.\u00a0 It is such a fabulous number, with plenty of audience participation and at the end, they called out for \u2018more\u2019.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a long time since that was called out (even if many wanted to do so on previous occasions, they haven\u2019t!).\u00a0 Fats Waller\u2019s \u2018Black and Blue\u2019 came next, then they ended the evening with \u2018Creole Love Call\u2019.\u00a0 Again, such a lovely evening and once again, due to the magic, I forgot to record.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Diane &amp; Keith<\/p>\n<h6>\u2018Beale Street Blues\u2019 \u2013 W.C.
