Never a boring moment with \u2018LAURIE CHESCOE\u2019S REUNION BAND\u2019<\/strong><\/span>, they always entertain us with some great choices of songs. Friday, 3rd<\/span><\/sup> July 2015<\/strong><\/span> was no exception here at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong><\/span>. <\/strong>\u00a0The musicians with drummer LAURIE<\/strong><\/span>, were ALLAN (\u2018Lord Arsenal\u2019) BRADLEY<\/strong><\/span> on trumpet, piano & vocals, JOHN LEE<\/strong><\/span> on reeds,COLIN BRAY<\/strong><\/span> on piano & sax, JIM DOUGLAS<\/span><\/b> on banjo & guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON<\/strong><\/span> on bass guitar & bass ukulele. JACKIE FREE<\/span><\/b> was on trombone, who kindly stepped in at the last minute, for Mike Pointon.\u00a0 I think it is the first time Jackie has played here and what a super player he is.\u00a0 Aren\u2019t you lucky to find a club like this, so you can always enjoy listening to the best of traditional jazz, plus enjoy dancing too.<\/p>\n

They began with a pretty great up-tempo number, \u2018Chicago (That Toddlin\u2019 Town)\u2019<\/em>, with Jackie singing (sorry to gush, but he is also a marvellous singer), not forgetting Laurie\u2019s wonderful drumming and with his infectious smile too. \u00a0I am usually busy at the start, but managed to have a dance straight off.\u00a0 We knew we were in for some fun, for sure.\u00a0 They featured Jackie in the next number, \u2018Here\u2019s That Rainy Day\u2019<\/em>, really lovely.<\/p>\n

The mood changed for the next number, with Allan singing \u2018I Scream, You Scream Ice Cream,<\/em> jointly sung by audience and obviously such fun, that number.\u00a0\u00a0 What an ‘engine’ too.<\/p>\n

Next, Colin left the piano and played\u00a0alto sax to \u2018Roses of Picardy\u2019<\/em>, with Allan taking over on piano (Oh the talent that is around!).\u00a0 As per usual, Colin came out with a joke, in his usual extremely dry humoured wit.\u00a0 No, I won\u2019t tell you what the joke was \u2013 I\u2019ll leave that to Colin, for his next audience. [Just a little added info for you, it was recorded for the soundtrack of \u2018Downton Abbey].<\/p>\n

John was featured next on tenor sax, with Pete playing bass Ukulele. They played Al Johnson\u2019s \u2018Avalon\u2019.<\/em>\u00a0 What a fabulous sax player he is.\u00a0 I must mention John again, when they played \u2018Basin Street\u2019<\/em> his clarinet was especially good.<\/p>\n

\u2018(Fall In Love) Says My Heart\u2019<\/em> was a number we danced our line-dance to, fabulous (a Fox Trot actually).\u00a0 Then I recall Jim\u2019s solo with \u2018Body & Soul\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 He really is a star.\u00a0 Well they all are, especially when Allan sang \u2018Sunshine & Showers\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 What a lovely job he also makes of singing.<\/p>\n

A friend of mine (Patricia<\/span><\/b>) brought a lovely young couple, Jana and Krystof Jelinek<\/span><\/b><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to the club.\u00a0 They were visiting her from the\u00a0Czech Republic<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0Jana is an interpreter for N.A.T.O. and Krystof is a music teacher.\u00a0 He plays piano brilliantly, especially Straus, his favourite composer.\u00a0 Colin kindly allowed the use of his piano, so Krystof was able to play some Straus for us, during our first interval.\u00a0 His first piece was \u2018Voices of Spring\u2019<\/em> and the second was \u2018Morning Papers\u2019.<\/em>\u00a0 How beautifully he played and was such a delightful change.\u00a0 Thank you Krystof.\u00a0 I believe they are planning to make a return visit to England next year, so hopefully he will again give us a treat.<\/p>\n
