The MILLENNIUM EAGLE JAZZ BAND <\/strong><\/span>(from the Midlands) included us as part of their tour on FRIDAY, 15th<\/sup> MAY 2015<\/strong><\/span> here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 Their last gig in January 2013, was unfortunately cancelled due to the Country being snow-bound.\u00a0 They have been coming to us for several years now, but with a gap, so it was great to welcome them back again.\u00a0 The band\u00a0 consists of PETER BROWN<\/b><\/span> on <\/b>trumpet, cornet, valve trombone & vocals, with\u00a0MATT PALMER <\/strong><\/span>on clarinet, sax & vocals,\u00a0\u00a0 TERRY WILLIAMS<\/strong><\/span> on trombone & vocals, BRIAN LAWRENCE<\/strong><\/span> on double bass & sousaphone (not our \u2018TOES\u2019 Brian) and \u00a0JULYAN \u2018BABY JOOLS’ ALDRIDGE<\/strong><\/span> on drums.\u00a0\u00a0 Chris Etherington was on holiday, so JIM DOUGLAS<\/strong><\/span> on guitar & banjo,\u00a0took his place. \u00a0I promised that if it snowed on Friday, we would dig them \u2018in\u2019 \u2013 ha.\u00a0 Seriously, we had a great time with them the previous times, but unfortunately, my computer was down during those years (newsletters temporarily lost).<\/p>\n

To begin this newsletter, I want to relate the end of the evening first! (Well, you all know I\u2019m strange).\u00a0 However, my reason is because when they finished the evening, the audience kept yelling for \u201cmore\u201d and the band obliged, playing on for a good 20minutes, or so, past time.\u00a0 They chose some continuous ‘hot’ Glen Miller numbers and practically everyone in the club got on the dance floor. What an atmosphere!<\/span>\u00a0 Ok, now to return to the beginning of the evening! \u00a0My first number to tell you of, is called \u2018Moose March\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 I had 3 ticks against it, which I had meant \u2018brilliant\u2019 \u2013 with great soprano sax by Matt.\u00a0 Likewise against the next number, \u2018Maple Leaf Rag\u2019<\/em>, giving mention to solos by Brian (sousaphone), Matt and Jim.\u00a0 Then came \u2018The Best Things in Life Are Free\u2019<\/em>, sung by Peter, with harmonising by Matt and Terry \u2013 wonderful singing too.<\/p>\n

Matt had a feature number next with \u2018In The Middle Of the Night\u2019-just super.<\/em>\u00a0 We made the next number our line-dance, \u2018After You\u2019ve Gone\u2019<\/em>, which was played wonderfully.\u00a0 \u2019Creole Love Call\u2019<\/em> came next, played\u2019 Duke Ellington style\u2019 and encouraged our two visiting fabulous dancers on the floor, Linda and John (from Rochester area, we think).<\/p>\n

Jim\u2019s feature (backed by Brian) came next with \u2018I’m Putting All My Eggs in One Basket\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Plenty of applause there, of course.\u00a0 Now the next number (another three ticks) was superb by all, namely Sidney Bechet\u2019s \u2018Coffee Grinder\u2019<\/em>, simply fabulous.\u00a0 I must mention Terry and Peter\u2019s (on valve trombone) fantastic duet with \u2018T\u2019Aint What You Do\u2019,<\/em> (Brian was great too).<\/p>\n

But then they left the best till last – \u2018Tiger Rag\u2019 <\/em>they all excelled\u00a0<\/em>(Brian was\u00a0on sousaphone and Peter on trumpet and whistle) and oh!\u00a0what a drum solo – fantastic \u2018Babes\u2019!\u00a0 What more can one say \u2013 a simply brilliant evening and we all went home wanting more \u2026 and that\u2019s what jazz is all about don\u2019t you agree?<\/p>\n
