Last week, I yelled out\u00a0(well, in writing)\u00a0 Hey! JOHN MEEHAN<\/strong> is bringing his SAVANNAH JAZZ BAND<\/strong> back again to our FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong> on Friday 27th<\/sup> March 2015<\/strong>. It had been three years since they last visited us, so I said you had better get to the club early, because they are a hugely popular band.\u00a0 Leader and drummer John, still has BILL SMITH<\/strong> on cornet, ROGER MYERSCOUGH<\/strong> on clarinet, BRIAN \u2018SAM\u2019 ELLIS<\/strong> on trombone, TONY POLLITT<\/strong> on bass, although this time, ANDY MAYNARD<\/strong> was on banjo.<\/p>\n

And get here early, you did \u2013 out of the woodwork. Lovely to see you all, just like the old days (even with some regulars away on holiday). The music was wonderful too.<\/p>\n

Roger started the ball rolling with his singing \u2018Walking with the King\u2019<\/em>, then Bill joined in singing too. The number is a great favourite, so it\u00a0woo\u2019d dancers onto the floor straight away and you knew the evening was going to be a success.<\/p>\n

The next\u00a0tune was a hit of Benny Goodman \u2018The Glory of Love\u2019<\/em> and (I think \u2013 although I didn\u2019t jot down) was the choice for our line-dance.<\/p>\n

\u2018Black Cat on a Fence\u2019<\/em> is another number that lured all the dancers out (it reminded me so much of our\u00a0Phil Mason days). \u2018Nothing Blues\u2019 <\/em>was another number they chose to do, which has a wonderful dance temp – super cornet Bill.<\/p>\n

How you (the band) were swinging with ‘Sam’ on trombone, Roger on tenor sax and Bill on harmonica. The next number was one for the smooching, \u2018Till Then\u2019 <\/em>and again, a full house dance floor! Ken Colyer\u2019s hit tune \u2018Postman\u2019s Lament\u2019<\/em> was sung by Roger and as for \u2018Panama Rag\u2019,<\/em> it was just fabulous, with John performing a superbly brilliant drum solo. My next choice of song to mention is \u2018I Sing Because I\u2019m Happy\u2019 <\/em>of course sung by Roger \u2013 yeahh! Then they were ALL fab, fab, just fab<\/strong> with \u2018Shout Em Aunt Tilly\u2019. <\/em>What a fantastic job they did with that number.<\/p>\n

The engine room were marvellous, with Tony on bass, Andy on banjo and the mistro John, himself on drums.\u00a0 Well done everyone and hope it doesn\u2019t go another three years before we see you all again at Farnborough. Listen everyone, make a point of going wherever you see them advertised. You will not regret it.<\/p>\n
