Photo by Mike Witt<\/span>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>PHOENIX DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND<\/strong> was the order of the day here at the <strong>Farnborough Jazz Club<\/strong> on<strong> 23<sup>rd<\/sup> January 2015<\/strong>. \u00a0Leader and clarinettist <strong>ROBIN COOMBS<\/strong> had booked <strong>PAUL HIGGS<\/strong>\u00a0to be on trumpet, <strong>BILL TODD<\/strong> on trombone,\u00a0<strong>DAVE BARNES<\/strong>\u00a0on piano,\u00a0<strong>ROGER CURPHEY<\/strong> on double bass,\u00a0<strong>JOHN STUART<\/strong>\u00a0on guitar (WHO\u2019S HE? huh) and\u00a0<strong>ALLAN CLARKE<\/strong>\u00a0on drums.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although not their first number (I missed what that was called) I must begin my notes with <em>\u2018Wabash Blues\u2019<\/em>, a brilliant jaunty song, bringing on the dancers. A while ago, Dave met up with an old friend, Ian Grant, lyricist of \u2018<em>Let There Be Love\u2019 (1940)<\/em>. He showed Dave some lyrics he\u2019d written fifty years ago called <em>\u2018We\u2019re Handing it to You Mr Handy, for handing us the St. Louis Blues\u2019<\/em>, referring to W.C. Handy, composer of St. Louis Blues. He asked Dave if he could put some music to it. \u00a0The end result is they played it for us and how I wished I had recorded it. Photo by Mike Witt<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u2018When I married Sweet Loraine\u2019 <\/em>was sung by Paul, then he was featured in the next number, \u2018<em>Sometimes I wonder Why I Spend the Lonely Nights\u2019<\/em>. Wowie Paul, you are brilliant. Now the next number is a great old favourite, made more famous by Glen Miller, namely<em> \u2018Little Brown Jug\u2019<\/em> and several of us got up to do our (fun Charleston style) line-dance. What can I say about <em>\u2018Pennies From Heaven\u2019<\/em>? Only that I was busy dancing! I must mention<em> \u2018At the Jazz Band Ball\u2019<\/em>, of course a great Kenny Ball trad favourite. They certainly did it justice too \u2013 fabulous drumming from Allan. It was sung by Dave, plus must mention a great solo by John on banjo. \u00a0Well another super evening from this band and so you must make a note they are back on 5<sup>th<\/sup> June 2015.
