We had a pleasant evening with PHOENIX DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND<\/strong> at the Farnborough Jazz Club<\/strong> on Friday, 5th<\/sup> December 2014<\/strong>. Leader and clarinettist ROBIN COOMBS<\/strong>\u2019 line-up was PAUL HIGGS<\/strong>\u00a0on trumpet, BILL TODD<\/strong> on trombone,\u00a0DAVE BARNES<\/strong>\u00a0on piano,\u00a0ROGER CURPHEY<\/strong> on double bass,\u00a0ERNIE CRANENBURGH<\/strong>\u00a0on guitar and\u00a0TONY BLACKBURN<\/strong>\u00a0on drums.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The audience was a little smaller, most likely due to Christmas festivities looming (i.e. office parties, shopping etc.), but it didn\u2019t detract those who were there, from enjoying themselves. Here\u00a0are some of the numbers played. My first choice to mention was sung by Bill and very nice too, being \u2018I Can\u2019t Give You Anything But Love\u2019<\/em>. Next came Jimmy Noone\u2019s hit tune \u2018Apex Blues\u2019<\/em>. Robin then announced he wanted to play \u2018Strangers On the Shore\u2019<\/em> in honour of Acker Bilk, who passed away 2nd<\/sup> November this year. Robin featured the song really well and we are glad he gave Acker a mention, another absolutely brilliant talent, who has joined that huge jazz band in the skies.<\/p>\n

\u2018South\u2019<\/em> is a lovely jaunty tune to please us dancers and then Bill sang \u2018All of Me\u2019<\/em>. Paul played a magnificent trumpet solo, what a talent.<\/p>\n

The next one was sung by Dave this time, namely \u2018Rosetta\u2019<\/em>, which also lured the dancers out. Robin mentioned having a holiday in Cuba and why wouldn\u2019t you mention it! Whilst there, he wrote a song and named it \u2018Cocoanut Ice\u2019<\/em>, which I loved and made an attempt to dance the mambo with Steve, thanks Steve for humouring me (I do try \u2013 or am I trying!). Another favourite of many of our audiences has been \u2018Big Butter and Egg Man\u2019<\/em>, which they performed marvellously – I notice a smidgen of Bud Flanagan\u2019s \u2018Who Do You Think You\u2019re Kidding Mr Hitler\u2019<\/em> too. They finished the evening with \u2018I\u2019ve Found a New Baby\u2019<\/em>, sung wonderfully by Bill, with a lovely solo by Ernie.<\/p>\n

Another evening of happiness which warmed us up, to face the freezing weather outside (brilliant frost patterns on our cars). So come back next Friday, (12th<\/sup> November 2014) for some more warming up music, you can turn your heating off at home for a few hours! We have the Golden Eagle Jazz Band. By the way, I thought I\u2019d remind you the meaning of \u2018Happiness\u2019: W.C. Fields quoted Charles Dickins\u2019 Micawber Principle: “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds nought and six, result misery.”<\/p>\n
