With MIKE BARRY\u2019S UPTOWN GANG<\/strong> at Farnborough Jazz Club<\/strong> on Friday, 28th<\/sup> November 2014<\/strong>, we had another happy evening. I said last week, they are a very entertaining and relaxed band, with such lovely choices of music to set the dancers going. They didn\u2019t let us down. They looked good, they were so professional and again everyone had smiles of enjoyment on their \u2018boat races\u2019.<\/p>\n

MIKE BARRY<\/strong> (leader, trumpeter & vocals) had booked BRIAN WHITE<\/strong> on clarinet, \u2018WHISPERING\u2019 MICK HOLT<\/strong> on trombone & vocals, TREFOR WILLIAMS <\/strong>on bass, JOHN STUART <\/strong>on banjo and GRAHAM COLLICOTT <\/strong>on drums. A lovely line-up. They began the evening with \u2018River, Stay \u2018Way From My Door\u2019 and <\/em>was sung by Mike, a number recorded by Frank Sinatra, which I loved. Oh yes Mike, don\u2019t worry, I loved you singing it too, ha. They carried on with a foxtrot number \u2018I\u2019ve Found A New Baby\u2019<\/em>, with\u00a0all of them performing fabulous solos.<\/p>\n

Next came \u2018Panama Rag\u2019 famously recorded by the three \u2018Bs\u2019 \u2013 Barber, Ball and Bilk.<\/em> This was followed on with \u2018Whispering\u2019 Mike who sang, \u2018It\u2019s Only A Paper Moon<\/em>\u2019<\/em> (both Ella and Nat had hits with it). Then Brian, who also has a super jazz voice, sang \u2018Buddy Bolden\u2019s Blues (Funky Butt)\u2019<\/em> (remember Hugh Laurie sang it?). After a break, they played a lovely fun number called \u2018The Yama Yama Man\u2019<\/em>. I could be wrong, but I don\u2019t recall it being played here before, (I wonder if it influenced the writing of \u2018The Yawning Man\u2019 from Tom Thumb? I must show my granddaughter that one). Anyway, it was a Broadway number from\u00a0a Show \u2018The Three Twins\u2019 (an odd title). Again, another number I don\u2019t think has been played for us before, being a Sidney Bechet hit number \u2018Blues in Thirds (Caution Blues)\u2019<\/em>. I loved it.\u00a0 Of course I just love to hear \u2018Whispering\u2019 Mike sing and act the Bing Crosby hit song \u2018Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams\u2019<\/em>, what a star. He then harmonized with Mike, to \u2018Down By the Riverside (Study War No More)\u2019<\/em>, which ended another truly enjoyable evening and can tell you one for your diaries, they will be back on 13th<\/sup> February 2015.<\/p>\n
