\u00a0TONY PITT\u2019S ALL STARS<\/strong> at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong> on 21st<\/sup> NOVEMBER 2014<\/strong> was quite mediocre! Am I kidding? OF COURSE I AM! SPECTACULAR, UNBELIEVABLE, OUTSTANDING \u2013 LOST FOR WORDS!<\/strong> \u00a0Tony had booked another superb treat for us with none-other-than ROY WILLIAMS<\/strong> on trombone, DENNY ILETT<\/strong> on trumpet, AL NICHOLS<\/strong> on soprano and tenor saxes, TREVOR EVANS<\/strong>\u00a0on double bass, JOHN ELLMER<\/strong> on drums and of course TONY<\/strong> himself, \u2018solid as a rock\u2019 on banjo.<\/p>\n

How can I explain that I am not exaggerating either? Whatever I write will not give you the full picture, you had to be there.\u00a0 A great audience, with such smiling faces, enjoying this wonderful array of top notch musicians. What is so lovely, is the fact they were all unassuming and with none trying to hog the limelight.<\/p>\n

I think I might upset other bands if I go on anymore, so will just tell you what tunes they played. They began with a Jimmy Rogers number \u2018Travellin\u2019 Blues\u2019<\/em>, great one to start.\u00a0 The next number, \u2018Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me\u2019,<\/em> I had written down \u2018great solo from Al on soprano sax\u2019, but then continued to write \u2018oh wowie, great solo from all of them\u2019.<\/p>\n

When I Grow Too Old To Dream\u2019<\/em> had six of us performing our line-dance. Mike took a photo and I now realise I just have to diet (gulp), but it is Gordon\u2019s fault being ill\u00a0\u2013 not enough dances – thank goodness for Steve. Then what about \u2018Basin Street\u2019 <\/em>\u2013 they \u2018stormed\u2019 it. The front line were spectacular, being supported brilliantly by the engine \u2018boys\u2019 (Al was on tenor). But then they finished the section in the same spirit with \u2018South Rampart Street Parade\u2019 <\/em>– John performed a brilliant drum solo. They changed the mood with Denny singing the next number, \u2018You Always Hurt the One You Love\u2019, lovely number.<\/em> With Tony having introduced the \u2018South Rampart St\u2019 number as \u2018Bourbon Street Parade\u2019<\/em>, they decided to play it. Obviously, the audience gave him some stick \u2013 ha. I noted Al played soprano sax when they played \u2018Indianna (Back Home In)\u2019<\/em> and then Denny sang \u2018Just a Gigolow\u2019, yet another great jazz voice<\/em>. Everyone was begging for \u2018more\u2019, with no-one leaving the dance floor. So they played on for us, with \u2018Everybody Loves My Baby\u2019, <\/em>which was just wonderful (I think there was an interjection of \u2018Mood Indigo\u2019<\/em>).<\/p>\n

It resulted with them playing well over time and I\u2019m sure it was because they were enjoying themselves just as much as we were listening to them. Another fabulous evening and such a \u2018high\u2019 to go home on. By the way, you might wonder why I list composers. I just feel without them, we would not be enjoying our Fridays, so we should not forget them (read on google\u00a0about Shelly Lee Alley www.shellyleealley.com –\u00a0very interesting man). We might not have met these composers, but fantastic to meet the musicians who play for us \u2018live\u2019! Keep supporting us to enjoy this moment in time. Plus we have more for you to enjoy next Friday too, with Mike Barry\u2019s Uptown Gang.<\/p>\n
