\u2018LAURIE CHESCOE\u2019S REUNION BAND\u2019<\/strong> certainly did excite us BIG TIME, <\/strong>on Friday, 14th<\/sup> November 2014<\/strong> at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Drummer and leader, Laurie<\/strong> had again reunited those fantastic musicians, ALLAN (\u2018Lord Arsenal\u2019) BRADLEY<\/strong> on trumpet, piano & vocals, JOHN LEE<\/strong> on reeds, MIKE POINTON<\/strong> on trombone & vocals, COLIN BRAY<\/strong> on piano, curly soprano sax, ironing board & xylophone, JIM DOUGLAS<\/strong> on banjo & guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON<\/strong> on bass guitar & bass ukulele. Oh you bet, another fun evening is an understatement, because they were just. Everyone just gushed with telling Keith and I, just how much they loved the evening. They began appropriately for this week, dedicating their first number \u2018Rosetta\u2019<\/em> to the Rosetta Space Mission (super to think of doing it (see below). Next came a \u2018Fats\u2019 Waller number \u2018Ain\u2019t Misbehavin\u2019<\/em>,<\/em> sung by Mike. I remember Allan\u2019s solo, he interjected with a snippet\u00a0of\u00a0two other songs, a Hoagy one – \u2018 Two Sleepy People\u2019<\/em>, plus a little of Rogers and Hart\u2019s tune from the 1940\u2019s show \u2018Pal Joey\u2019 – \u2018Bewitched Bother and Bewildered\u2019<\/em>, what a star he is.<\/p>\n

Talking of stars, one of our favourite tenor sax players, John was featured with Django Reinhardt\u2019s \u2018Swing 42\u2019.\u00a0 <\/em>He\u00a0played it in his smooth Ben Webster style – \u00a0Just so\u00a0beautifully.<\/p>\n

Then we come to Colin! Oh what a man. He is fabulous. He came up to the front with his soprano sax and played \u2018Avalon\u2019 <\/em>(with Allan on piano). He not only played it fantastically, he performed it the same, with legs akimbo (see photo) and even at one point, with one arm behind his back!!!! So entertaining (including his intro\u2019 \u2013 sort of Jack Benny style).\u00a0\u00a0 Follow that, they did, dedicating their next number to one of our regular visitors \u2018Brown Owl Pete\u2019, with \u2018I\u2019m Nobody\u2019s Baby\u2019<\/em>. Pete was a long-time roadie with the likes of Max Collie and including Rod Mason, whenever he was in England.\u00a0 Next on my list was \u2018Tishomingo Blues\u2019,<\/em> which was sung by Mike – I jotted down \u2018a mean trumpet from Allan\u2019.<\/p>\n

Well next came another special \u2026. Colin with an ironing board! No, not to play, to lean on. He produced a xylophone and I won\u2019t tell you what he said, because I certainly don\u2019t want to spoil his other gigs, save to say he is so funny. Not his playing though, he played a storm with \u2018I Can\u2019t Give You Anything But Love, Baby\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But still the band continued to excite us with the next number \u2018Hindustan\u2019,<\/em> especially with Laurie\u2019s brilliant drum solo intro, closely followed by Allan\u2019s also brilliant trumpet intro and everyone joined in superbly. Another number to mention was that lovely \u2018Hoagie\u2019 number, \u2018Two Sleepy People\u2019<\/em>, which Mike sang [was Allan just practicing earlier] hey I\u2019m so sorry Ron, sitting next to you and accompanying Mike, I just couldn\u2019t help myself (singing, I mean)!<\/p>\n

The number \u2018God Bless the Child\u2019<\/em> was a feature for Jim on guitar next, with Peter backing him. Jim is famous for his guitar playing, although he is just as marvellous on banjo. They played several songs after that, but I was too busy dancing and took no more notes. I just want to say the band enjoyed themselves as well, so played after time with one more number. I know, you think I\u2019m also gushing too much, but it is all true.<\/p>\n

P.S. Just to finish off, a few weeks ago, I mentioned our friend, Leslie Baguley. \u00a0Just to update you, I asked for relatives to get in touch and Leslie\u2019s son, Craig did. He and his wife (plus two friends) came to Laurie\u2019s evening. So these newsletters are read, thank goodness (that\u2019s a note to myself – ha).<\/p>\n
