RED WING BAND (from Sweden) with guest BRIAN CARRICK<\/strong> appeared for the first time here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB<\/strong> on Friday, 31st October 2014<\/strong>.\u00a0 We were so proud\u00a0another exciting band included us as part of their UK\u00a02014 Tour.<\/p>\n

The band members included their leader and trombonist, HANS ZAKRISSONV<\/strong>, with SVERKER NYSTRON <\/strong>on clarinet and alto sax, LIEF MELDAHL<\/strong> on bass, HANS JORGENSEN<\/strong> on banjo, INGAMAR WAGERMAN<\/strong> on piano and RONALD ANDERSON<\/strong> (from Denmark) on drums.<\/p>\n

They had a special guest with them, who was our very own BRIAN CARRICK<\/strong> on reeds. They were all exceptional together. What a band!<\/p>\n

\"Brian<\/a>

Brian\u00a0is best known to most of you as leader of his own highly popular ‘Brian Carrick’s\u00a0Algiers Stompers’ band and\u00a0has already appeared here at Farnborough (I have found write-up for 26th October 2012, so have published it for that date!).\u00a0 Of course, you may recall, Brian plays the old metal clarinet\u00a0belonging to George Lewis<\/strong>,\u00a0(given to him\u00a0by\u00a0George’s daughter).\u00a0 Right from their first number, you knew we were in for a super evening. It began with their signature tune, \u2018Red Wing\u2019<\/em>, which brought on the dancers immediately. We did not have our Gordon to start the dancing off, he being in hospital (now recovering from quadruple by-pass). However, we were delighted to have been joined by a new couple, Jane and Alan (regulars with 1066 Club at Hastings) who came especially to see the band. Keith thought they were the cabaret act\u00a0with the band. [We do hope to see you both again, you were thoroughly entertaining too, although Gordon said to tell you to lay off his patch \u2013 only joking.] \u00a0The next number to mention is George Lewis\u2019 own \u2018Burgundy Street Blues\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 Brian sang it and played George\u2019s clarinet (quite a lovely thought). Another tune I think George was associated with, was \u2018Postman\u2019s Lament\u2019<\/em>, which was great.\u00a0 I think Brian sang the next one, \u2018Moonlight and Roses\u2019<\/em>, but did not make any notes, as I was too busy enjoying a dance with Steve.<\/p>\n

Now I know Brian sang the next number, because he was fantastic \u2013 like a ‘rock’ star. Ronald Anderson had come out from behind the drums to play electric guitar and the two of them were brilliant \u2013 we were all mesmerised. The number? \u2018Muddy Road\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 At the end of the evening, I told Ronald I was sure I knew him. Of course I knew him, he had played for us many times with Phil Mason\u2019s All Stars\u2019 and including Warwick Leadlay\u2019s Starborough Castle jazz weekends too.<\/p>\n

A lovely number \u2018June Night\u2019<\/em> (a Tommy Dorsey ‘hit’) came next and was followed by a <\/em>great Latin American number called \u2019Laughing Samba\u2019<\/em>. \u00a0This is a dance I just love and once again, enjoyed seeing\u00a0Jane and Alan (I don\u2019t think they missed a dance). Another favourite of a quite a few people at the club was \u2018St. Philip Street Breakdown\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 After all, it has been recorded by all the greats.\u00a0 So we come to the last number, aptly named \u2018Till We Meet Again\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0We hope we do get to see them again. What a wonderful evening.<\/p>\n
