CANCELLED ‘Lord Napier Hot Shots’, Friday, 2nd March 2018 CANCELLED

The ‘LORD NAPIER HOT SHOTS’ have kindly agreed to cancel their gig here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB this Friday, 2nd March 2018.  The musicians were to have been MIKE JACKSON on trumpet, PAT GLOVER on clarinet, MIKE DUCKWORTH on trombone, LYNN SAUNDERS on banjo, BILL TRAXLER on drums and PETE CLANCY on double bass.

A reluctant decision has been made!  We feel it would be sensible to cancel this Friday’s Jazz.  There are too many of you ‘gung-ho’ jazz lovers, who would make the effort to support us and we would be putting you all in danger of falling over, as the situation is today, let alone on Friday.  This also includes Bill, with his drums, plus whoever brings the sound equipment – not easy in icy conditions.  But with the forecast being blizzards, it could be impossible to get into the clubhouse anyway.  So this way, it will be less stressful for me to get in touch with you all – I have a few days to make the many phone calls to those of you who are not on a computer!  It is a difficult job, as some of you who don’t come very often, just might decide to come this Friday.

Well, what a wicked situation.  The weather forecast has been horrible for Friday – blizzards, etc., forecasted!  What upsets me is the mere fact that we cancelled the whole of January, in case of such an event, but had absolutely no sign of bad weather at all.  We had planned on visiting Dick and Sheila at Sidcup Jazz club, only to find they were closed for the whole month too, due to renovations.  What do they call it – sod’s law!

Hopefully we can look forward to better weather the following Friday, 9th March 2018.  We have Mike Barry’s Uptown Gang.

Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics

I just don’t know how I am going to be at the club tonight, because I was up watching the Winter Olympics till about 4am.  I haven’t been well enough to watch from the beginning of the Olympics, but recovered very quickly.  I loved the figure skating, the curling and speed skiing (well all events).  But have to write Farnborough Jazz Clubs congratulations to Don Parson for the men’s skeleton final and winning the first medal of the 2018 Winter Olympics for Great Britain.  I will return to add……..

GRANTIES DIXIE SIX – 8th February 2018

GRANTIES DIXIE SIX will be making their debut entrance tonight 8th February 2018 here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent).  Hey last week was horrendous, weather-wise, but a brilliant evening as Rob made it a real party night.  This week, it’s Keith’s own band, with PETE RUDEFORTH on trumpet, JOHN LEE on reeds, BOB DWYER on trombone & vocals, TIM HUSKISSON on piano, ROGER CURPHEY on double bass and KEITH GRANT on drums.  A great line-up aye!  If I can muster some courage, I might even sing a song or two.  Now if you haven’t been before, now’s the time to come.  Start the year of with some brilliant jazz.  The entertainment value is surely worth a visit.  We love to dance here – we certainly love fun.  The bar is a Shepherd Neame (club prices) one and we have plenty of free carparking space.  All this for just a £10 entrance. Come on, what are you waiting for.  See you tonight (from 8:00pm till 11:00pm).

Your hosts,

Update – Dave Ware’s Dixie Hotshots 9th February 2018

I hope to bring this website up-to-date in due course, but meanwhile, perhaps photos will be my first ‘port of call’.  Over many years, our friend, Mike Witt, has taken the trouble to take the many photos at the club for us.  However, he is unable to come to the club at the moment, so meanwhile, we hope the many of you who have taken photos would kindly pass them to us please.  These photos were taken by Pete Marr and we thank him very much.  Hopefully, I shall return to write a few notes about the evening – again in due course.  Thanks.

Dave Ware’s Dixie Hotshots, Friday 9th February 2018

Hey, guess who is here on FRIDAY 9TH EBRUARY 2018?

Hershey and the Hotshots play for the first time at Farnborough Jazz Club on 4th December 2015. (LtoR) Paul Taylor (trombone), Graham Collicott (drums), Peter Leonard (trumpet&vocs), Roger Curphey (double bass), Tim Huskisson (clarinet&alto sax) and Andrew Clancy (piano). Photo by Jill Alex

We have DAVE WARE’S DIXIE HOTSHOTS, but WITHOUT Dave Ware!!!!  Seriously, poor ol’ Dave fell over in his garden and smashed his lip.  Well it goes without saying, trumpeters do not need to damage their lips, do they!  Oh well, bless him, he has replaced himself with a super trumpet player, PETER LEONARD.  Peter has played here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB a few times with other bands (see photo) and we can certainly vouch for him.   Anyway, Dave is sending us his usual band, but without Norman Ball too, as he is also under par.  So the band is  PETER LEONARD (trumpet & vocals), JOHN LEE (saxes), JOHN FINCH (trombone), LYN SAUNDERS (banjo & vocals) ROGER CURPHEY (double bass) and TONY BLACKBURN (drums).  I wont say anymore as Keith and I are being taken out by Jacque and Dave tonight to see The Syd Lawrence Orchestra at Langley Park Social Club and I need to get ready, so see you tomorrow here at Farnborough at 8:00pm.  I shall return either late tonight or in the morning with possibly another photo!

YOUR HOSTS – DIANE AND KEITH

P.S.  Wishing both Dave and Norman a speedy recovery
