The FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB will be entertained by the young MARTYN BROTHERS JAZZ BAND tonight, Friday, 30th June 2017.  BrothersBEN MARTYN (who plays double bass and sings) and EMILE MARTYN (who plays drums) are sons of the famous drummer and band leader Barry Martyn.  The boys often visit their Dad, who now lives in New Orleans.

Having mislaid my mobile, I am not sure who is booked to play for us tonight.  Will it be the same as last time when we had that giant trumpeter, PETE RUDEFORTH? Also, will it be RICHIE HOWARD on clarinet, IAN BEETLESTONE on piano and JOHN ‘flashback radio’ RUSCOE on guitar?  Please get your butts down here and find out WHO WILL be entertaining us.  Come and enjoy listening or dancing to whoever, you surely love a surprise sometimes aye!  If you haven’t been here before, everyone is welcome.  Music is from 8:00pm till 11:00pm. .

‘Live’ jazz, don’t lose it.

Hosted by Diane and Keith

P.S.  I have just been told (thanks Steve), literally two minute ago, some pretty horrible and unbelievable news.  The wonderful venue, loved by so many, namely The Lord Napier, is no longer.  It has the builders in, knocking it down.  Unfortunately, it is the first I have heard of the possibility.  I am so disappointed to have been told too late,  Especially now being unable to do anything about it, not that I’m sure I could have.  It’s just that I feel so helpless.  I will return at a later date to write a little something about this wonderful pub.  So many lovely musicians have performed there, including Keith.  They must all be devastated.   Signed a saddened Diane.

We are going to have a lovely little evening here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent) with the MAHOGANY HALL STOMPERS, being so used to playing for us. They are back this coming Friday 23rd June 2017.   Band leader BRIAN GILES (cornet) has booked JOHN ELLMER on ALL THE reeds, COLIN GRAHAM on trombone, plus ‘SOUTHEND BOB’ ALBUTT on banjo and vocals (Bob has such a rich baritone voice).  He also has CHRIS MARCHANT on drums and ROGER CURPHEY double bass.  All are welcome here.  We have a Shepherd Neame club bar, with club prices – come and try their new Spitfire lager.  There’s plenty of free parking, so no reason to stay at home.

Especially with Keith and moi (Diane) hosting your evening

Nothing like ‘live’ music.

P.S.  By the way, don’t forget, we are back at Ye Olde Whyte Lyon, Locks Bottom, Kent, (next to Princess Royal  University Hospital) this coming Sunday afternoon (25th June 2017) 3:00 till 6:00pm Our band,‘4-in-a-bar+1’, plays smooth jazz, with our KEITH (GRANT) on drums, JOHN LEE on tenor sax, DAVE BARNES on piano, TIM PHAROAH on doublss and I (DIANE) sing a few songs.  I think my nerves are improving and I hope I am sounding better, so please come along and enjoy the ambience of this sixteenth century pub.  Why not book a Sunday lunch on 01689-852631 (their lovely new chef is great) – food is between 12.30pm-5:30pm.  The Sainsbury’s Superstore car park behind the pub is free on Sundays.

New Orleans Z’hulus from Belgium, Friday, 16th June 2017

New Orleans Z’hulus Jazz Band on UK Tour with Emile Martyn (drums), Dan Vercruysse (trumpet) and Philippe De Smet (trombone), play at Farnborough Jazz Club, Kent on 22nd May 2015. Photo by Mike Witt.

We have a great band for you – the NEW ORLEANS Z’HULUS from Belgium playing for us tomorrow night, Friday, 16th June 2017. Their last appearance here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (Kent) was two years ago, so make the most of this visit, because we may have to wait a long time again for their next visit.  As you can see and as I said last time, this band has a wonderful International flavor, (a couple of changes from last time).  We have trumpeter DAN VERCRUYSSE, who is from BELGIUM.  Then there’s trombonist PHILIPPE DeSMET, who also fares from BELGIUM.  Plus clarinettist BOSS QUEROD, who is from FRANCE.  Then we have three English musicians.  First of all, a great treat for you, banjoist, PAUL SEALEY (10yrs with Chris Barber’s Band).  Second, there’s leader of the band, BRIAN TURNOCK.  Brian lives between U.K. and Belgium and plays double bass. Brian has recorded with many ‘greats’ such as George Lewis and Lil Armstrong,  Plus third, of course you all know drummer EMILE MARTYN, who lives between U.K. and U.S.A, (frequently visiting his Dad, famous band leader Barry Martyn – now living in New Orleans).  I am really looking forward to having this band back again at Farnborough.  We are so lucky to have such talent here, don’t you think.

So come and join us, your hosts,

Diane and Keith

‘Lord Napier Hot Shots, Friday, 9th June 2017

Lord_Napier Hotshots play at Farnborough Jazz Club on 16oct2015. Wot about those fab socks of Mike Duckworth (trombone)! Photo By Mike Witt.

The ‘LORD NAPIER HOT SHOTS’ will be making their way over to our FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB this Friday, 9th June 2017 to inject us with our weekly shot of jazz.   There will be a couple of changes in the band, so do have a look at the line-up.   MALCOLM WALTON (trumpet) will be joined by MIKE DUCKWORTH (trombone) [typeface same colour as Mike’s fun socks!], PAT GLOVER (reeds &vocals), as well as JOHN STEWART (banjo & guitar), plus MICK SCRIVEN (double bass, bass sax & vocals) and GRAHAM CAULICOTTE will be playing drums.  Last week was far too hot to dance any fast ones, in fact not much dancing at all, although they were great to listen to, but I believe this coming Friday will be much more pleasant, so put your dancing shoes in your bags and see you on Friday for that weekly exercise (and fun of course).

Your hosts, Diane & Keith

P.S. Only beautiful and happy people are allowed at Farnborough – so if you are ugly and miserable, then sorry, I’m afraid you can’t come in!!!!!!  Oh, I’ve just thought, you better make an appearance, otherwise everyone will think you were not allowed in – ha ha.

It’s exactly a year ago since ‘YERBA BUENA CELEBRATION JAZZ BAND’ appeared here at FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB (3rd June to be exact) and now they will return tonight, Friday 2nd June 2017.  This amazing 8-pce jazz band base their style on the great ‘Lu Watters’ Yerba Buena Jazz Band.  The guys in the band will be DAVE RANCE on 1st trumpet, plus he sings, MIKE BARRY is on 2nd trumpet, who also sings.  then there’s GOFF DUBBER   on clarinet, plus  GEORGE ‘KID’ TIDIMAN on trombone (‘Kid’ was in their original band), plus pianist HUGH CROZIER, including drummer PETE LAY, and JOHN ARTHY on tuba and certainly not least NICK SINGER playing banjo.  There you go, you just cannot miss this one.  Last year, you all came out of the woodwork to listen to them and we expect to see you all again this time too.  So get there early and I know you will enjoy yourselves, especially for dancing.

We don’t lie here – enjoy our ‘live’ jazz.

Your hosts, Diane and Keith
